Threats To Information Security Revisited, Michael Whitman, Herbert J. Mattord

Faculty Articles

The battle for the protection of information assets continues to rage at all organizations, big and small. In the ever-changing world of information security, new threats emerge, and old threats remain potent risks to poorly prepared organizations. It is critical to the ongoing protection of valuable information assets to understand these threats, new and old. This study seeks to inform organizations and researchers about the characteristics of specific threat categories and the relative dangers they pose. In addition, the study provides updated findings of a study conducted in 2002. New findings reveal the more things change, the more they stay …

Quantum Modeling Of Dark Matter In Galactic Halos, Shane Charles Spivey Jan 2012

Quantum Modeling Of Dark Matter In Galactic Halos, Shane Charles Spivey

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Eighty years after its initial discovery, the nature of dark matter remains a mystery. Contrary to observational evidence, simulations of dark matter halos predict cuspy density profiles and an abundant population of dwarf galaxies. Increasingly refined measurements of the dark matter halos in galaxies reveal a large variety of halo shapes and sizes, and so far no universal profile has been able to incorporate them all. Among the numerous dark matter candidates, models of so-called quantum cold dark matter (QCDM) have the unique potential to address the many disparities between theory and observation.QCDM postulates that dark matter is composed primarily …

Defect Studies In Cu-Based P-Type Transparent Conducting Oxides, Fnu Ameena Jan 2012

Defect Studies In Cu-Based P-Type Transparent Conducting Oxides, Fnu Ameena

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Among other intrinsic open-volume defects, copper vacancy (VCu) has been theoretically identified as the major acceptor in p-type Cu-based semiconducting transparent oxides, which has potential as low-cost photovoltaic absorbers in semi-transparent solar cells. A series of positron annihilation experiments with pure Cu, Cu2O, and CuO presented strong presence of VCu and its complexes in the copper oxides. The lifetime data also showed that the density of VCu was becoming higher as the oxidation state of Cu increased which was consistent with the decrease in the formation energy of VCu. Doppler broadening measurements further indicated that electrons with low momentum made …

Urban Particulate Matter Activates Akt In Human Lung Cells, T. L. Watterson, B. Hamilton, Randy S. Martin, R. A. Coloumb Jr. Jan 2012

Urban Particulate Matter Activates Akt In Human Lung Cells, T. L. Watterson, B. Hamilton, Randy S. Martin, R. A. Coloumb Jr.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The normally picturesque Cache Valley in northern Utah is frequently reported to have the worst particulate (PM) air pollution in the United States. Numerous epidemiological studies conducted elsewhere have associated PM exposure to a variety of cardiovascular diseases and early mortality. We have previously shown that Cache Valley PM (CVPM) is pro-inflammatory, through a variety of mechanisms involving the release of inflammatory cytokines, unfolded protein response, ER stress, and C-reactive protein (CRP). This study was undertaken to determine whether Cache Valley PM (CVPM) would activate Akt, an upstream mechanism common to these events. Human lung (BEAS-2B) cells were treated with …

Physiological Responses Of Turfgrass Species To Drought Stress Under High Desert Conditions, Nisa Leksungnoen, Paul Johnson, Roger Kjelgren Jan 2012

Physiological Responses Of Turfgrass Species To Drought Stress Under High Desert Conditions, Nisa Leksungnoen, Paul Johnson, Roger Kjelgren

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Broad concerns over water shortages and drought where irrigated urban landscapes are common in high desert regions have focused attention on drought tolerance of turfgrass species. We investigated the physiological responses of kentucky bluegrass (KBG) and tall fescue (TF) under a prolonged drought under high desert conditions. The experimental design was a split plot with three replicates. Two irrigation treatments as a whole plot—well-watered and no water—were applied to subplots of ‘Midnight’ KBG and ‘Gazelle’ TF. Stomatal conductance (gS), canopy temperature, and predawn leaf water potential were measured over two seasons. KBG gS and leaf water potential decreased faster and …

Installation Art And Memory: A Practice-As-Research Exploration, James Barber Jan 2012

Installation Art And Memory: A Practice-As-Research Exploration, James Barber

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This practice-as-research project investigates how a piece of site-responsive Installation Art, titled Triple Point Dunnage (exhibited in Royal William Yard, June 2009), can be used to generate knowledge about memory work through experience of site. Working in dialogue with the ideas of Daniel C. Dennett, Lucy Lippard and Gaston Bachelard, I attempted to create a permeable and fluctuating creative setting for the memory work of participants. An approach that used site as a stimulant within a process which also incorporated theoretical themes. During the period of design and construction, I interacted with and recorded interviews with people who had a …

New Evidence On The Mechanics Of Wing Unfolding In Dermaptera (Insecta), Fabian Haas, Justin Tan Chek Hwen, Hung Bun Tang Jan 2012

New Evidence On The Mechanics Of Wing Unfolding In Dermaptera (Insecta), Fabian Haas, Justin Tan Chek Hwen, Hung Bun Tang

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The wing unfolding in Dermaptera is re-analysed for two species, Auchenomus sp. (Spongiphoridae) and Timomenus lugens (Bormans, 1894) (Forficulidae), based on several digital movie sequences made in the earwigs' natural environment. The frames were separated and numbered sequentially to establish the time line of unfolding and (where available) folding. It is shown that the steps described earlier in contributions of the first author are confirmed, with the exception of the drivers. It has been assumed that the cerci are essential to unfold the wings. The current contribution clearly shows that this is not the case in all species: the wings …

Evaluating The Benefits Of Octree-Based Indexing For Lidar Data, Abu Saleh Mohammad Mosa, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Michela Bertolotto, Debra Laefer Jan 2012

Evaluating The Benefits Of Octree-Based Indexing For Lidar Data, Abu Saleh Mohammad Mosa, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Michela Bertolotto, Debra Laefer

Very large true three-dimensional (3D) point datasets, as opposed to the previously common 2.5D data sets, are progressively more common nowadays, such as from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). Increasingly, attempts are made to exploit these 3D point data sets beyond mere visualization. However, current Spatial Information Systems provide only limited 3D support. Even commercial systems advertising in-built, 3D data types provide only minimal functionality. Particularly, there is no effective means of indexing large 3D point datasets, which is crucial for efficient analysis and engineering usage. Also many datasets are information rich (e.g. contain color or some other associated semantic …

Study On The Microstructure Of African Wild Silk Cocoon Shells And Fibers, Addis Teshome, Fritz Vollrath, Suresh K. Raina, J. M. Kabaru, J. Onyari Jan 2012

Study On The Microstructure Of African Wild Silk Cocoon Shells And Fibers, Addis Teshome, Fritz Vollrath, Suresh K. Raina, J. M. Kabaru, J. Onyari

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Silk fibers and cocoon shells from four African wild silkmoths Gonometa postica, Anaphe panda, Argema mimosae and Epiphora bauhiniae-were studied to gain insight into the structure-property-function relations and potential commercial application. The surface and cross-section of cocoon shells and fibers revealed the presence of prominent structural variations. Cocoon shells were multilayered and porous structures constructed from highly cross-linked fibers that are densely packed within the sericin/gum. Fibers had fibrillar sub-structures running along the fiber axis and with greater number and size of voids. The ecological significance and implication of these structures for further application are discussed. © 2011.

Experimental Characterization Of Aerosol Flows Through Micro-Capillaries, Michael Jake Robinson Jan 2012

Experimental Characterization Of Aerosol Flows Through Micro-Capillaries, Michael Jake Robinson

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Understanding the forces which dictate fluid particle interaction is of high interest in the field of aerosol jet Direct Write (DW). Several methods utilizing shadowgraphy and Mie scattering were used to visualize particle flow exiting micro-capillaries. Experiments were designed such that results would offer insight into the effects of Stokes and Saffman force on particle trajectories. Comparison to these results allowed for the development of a theoretical model which was validated and used to optimize nozzle geometries for particle focusing. Optimized nozzle geometries resulted in the conclusion that under certain conditions Saffman force is applicable given an appropriate correction factor. …

Development Of Biobased Sandwich Structures For Mass Transit Application, Sethu Raaj Munusamy Jan 2012

Development Of Biobased Sandwich Structures For Mass Transit Application, Sethu Raaj Munusamy

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Efforts to increase the biobased content in sandwich composites are being investigated to reduce the dependence on synthetically produced or mined, energy-intensive materials for numerous composite applications. Vegetable oil-based polyurethane foams are gaining recognition as good substitutes for synthetic counter parts while utilizing bast fiber to replace fiberglass is also gaining credence. In this study, soy oil-based polyurethane foam was evaluated as a core in a sandwich construction with facesheets of hybridized kenaf and E-glass fibers in a vinyl ester resin matrix to replace traditionally used plywood sheeting on steel frame for mass transit bus flooring systems. As a first …
