On Feasibility Of Fingerprinting Wireless Sensor Nodes Using Physical Properties, Xiaowei Mei Jan 2012

On Feasibility Of Fingerprinting Wireless Sensor Nodes Using Physical Properties, Xiaowei Mei

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Fingerprinting wireless devices using physical properties has been recently suggested as an alternative for device identification and authentication. It has been found that the clock skew caused by the frequency discrepancy of the quartz crystals in different devices can be used as a reliable source for fingerprinting. Researchers have studied the application of the clock skew-based fingerprinting in sensor networks and claimed that it can detect fake identities, wormholes, and node replicas. However, the study in this paper draws a completely opposite conclusion, i.e., the clock skew of sensor nodes can be easily forged by adversaries to evade the detection. …

Pushpop: A Card Game, Vishal Subramani Jan 2012

Pushpop: A Card Game, Vishal Subramani

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis we have designed and implemented an Android card game called PushPop. This game is meant to stimulate the interest of kids in math learning. The Android game has cards with mathematical signs instead of the traditional suits. To reach the goal kids have to perform a lot of mathematical operations which helps them learn maths in a fun and effective way. A study was made to classify PushPop into the various games under the research umbrella of Game Theory. After the analysis we conclude that PushPop is a non-co-operative, symmetric, non-zero sum, simultaneously and imperfect information game …

Comparing Web Application Scanners For Xss Attacks, Dengfeng Xia Jan 2012

Comparing Web Application Scanners For Xss Attacks, Dengfeng Xia

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

As software industry is paying increasing attention to web application security, various testing tools with black box testing feature have been developed. To better evaluate their performance, researchers have made efforts in several ways. Since XSS attack is one of the major attacks which can bring severe damages to victims, it is meaningful to pay specific attention to its testing process. However, many web application scanner evaluation projects make comparisons about various vulnerability types, and they are not dedicated to XSS issues enough. Their evaluations either use vulnerable applications in real life, or use test cases created by themselves, and …

A Novel Scheme For Contact Predictions In Opportunistic Networks, Sujoy Kumar Bhattacharya Jan 2012

A Novel Scheme For Contact Predictions In Opportunistic Networks, Sujoy Kumar Bhattacharya

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In the opportunistic network (ON) paradigm information is exchanged between two devices as they encounter each other. For such information exchange to take place the devices must know about the presence of other devices in the neighborhood. A very fundamental problem in ON is to predict the occurrence of a future opportunistic contact which is otherwise highly dynamic and unreliable. An accurate predictor which takes into account the long time history can benefit from multiple objectives. Such a predictor switches to the data transfer mode in anticipation of a contact. Also it maximizes the number of opportunistic contacts while spending …

Shaping Network Topology For Privacy And Performance, Md Monjurul Hasan Jan 2012

Shaping Network Topology For Privacy And Performance, Md Monjurul Hasan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Anonymity systems provide privacy for Internet communication and are becoming popular. Unfortunately, users experience slow Internet connection through existing systems because paths used to route traffic are selected randomly without considering latency between nodes. In our work, we aim to design a better approach for selecting paths in anonymity systems with improved performance and without sacrificing privacy. We consider stratified topologies for our design where nodes are divided into three hops. We propose a scheme to build restricted network topologies on top of a stratified topology that maximizes throughput. First, we use Tabu Search to build latency-aware stratified restricted topologies …

Control Framework Dynamic Walking Of A Bipedal Robot, Kishan Kumar Bhongale Prabhakar Prasad Jan 2012

Control Framework Dynamic Walking Of A Bipedal Robot, Kishan Kumar Bhongale Prabhakar Prasad

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Despite significant progress in recent years, the capabilities of today's Humanoid robots still lack behind the walking abilities of humans in terms of competence, robustness, flexibility, and speed. Furthermore, unknown environmental conditions and related constraints imposed on the robot significantly increase the complexity of locomotion control and decision making for such systems, easily making planning-based approaches intractable. Part of the reason for this is that the control of a humanoid encompasses observation, processing the observed data, and decision making in terms of locomotion gait and body pose parameters. This key information derived from observations and internal robot information finally allows …

The Dominican Crisis Of 1962-1965, Communist Aggression Or U.S. Intervention, Cary W. Beshel Jan 2012

The Dominican Crisis Of 1962-1965, Communist Aggression Or U.S. Intervention, Cary W. Beshel

History Theses - Archive

In this paper I deconstructed the U.S. Invasion of the Dominican Republic in 1965. I also look at the events leading up to the military intervention, such as assassination of Trujillo, the Bosch presidency, and the turbulent period of the military junta. The paper also takes a broader look at the implications of communist expansion and the U.S. response under George Kennan's Domino Theory. I utilized a number of primary documents that have been recently made public to examine the U.S. response to what was seen as a left leaning rebellion within the Dominican Republic. I found that the Cuban …

The Old Bailey: The Court Of Londoners In An Era Of Revolution, Nathaniel Goodwin Jan 2012

The Old Bailey: The Court Of Londoners In An Era Of Revolution, Nathaniel Goodwin

History Theses - Archive

The history of the laws and courts of England is a rich subject, but little work has been done on the history of common law prior to the eighteenth century. With fewer sources than later periods and a confusing system of overlapping jurisdictions the late seventeenth century has largely been ignored by legal history scholars. Furthermore, the history of this period is often dominated by grand events like the Glorious Revolution. This thesis attempts to chronicle the activities of the Old Bailey - London's central criminal court during the era of the Glorious Revolution. Analysis of the Old Bailey Sessions …

Ronsons, Zippos, Brew-Ups, And Tommycookers: The M4 Sherman Tank And American Armored Development During World War Ii, John Michael Muller

History Theses - Archive

In January 1945 the M4 Sherman tank became embroiled in bitter controversy for its inability to match-up with certain tanks of the German Army. Citing many deficiencies of the Sherman, angry American tankers vented their frustrations to the media during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945. Questioning the effectiveness of the Ordnance Department and U.S. Army doctrine that governed the tanks produced, members of the media demanded a congressional investigation why American tanks appeared to be substantially inferior in mobility, firepower, and protection in comparison to German tanks. High-level commanders tried to quell the controversy …

Reducing The Encoding Time For H.264 Baseline Profile Using Parallel Programming Techniques., Tushar Ashok Saxena Jan 2012

Reducing The Encoding Time For H.264 Baseline Profile Using Parallel Programming Techniques., Tushar Ashok Saxena

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis is aimed at reducing the encoding time for a group of pictures (GOP) for h.264 baseline profile on a general purpose CPU. This thesis also aims at drawing a comparison between task based parallelism and data based parallelism. The reduction is achieved by encoding the frames in parallel rather than serially. Task based parallelism is achieved by equally dividing the GOP's in two different threads and running them on the underlying hardware at the same time using Open MP software. Data based parallelism is achieved by finding the hot spots in the software and then parallelizing it using …

Optimizing A Neural Network Over Size And Iteration Number, Jignesh K. Patel Jan 2012

Optimizing A Neural Network Over Size And Iteration Number, Jignesh K. Patel

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

A unique algorithm has been developed for training multilayer perceptron neural networks. First the training algorithm has been used with hidden weight optimization (HWO) and multiple optimal learning factors (MOLF) to get the best performance. In each training iteration, this method first optimally orders the inputs and then optimally orders the hidden basis functions. At the end of each training iteration, the method calculates the validation error versus number of basis function curve in one pass through the validation data. Since, pruning is done at each iteration, we optimize validation error over number of basis functions and number of iterations …

Exploratory Analysis Of The Relationship Between Present-On-Admission Factors Of Adult Inpatients And Risk For Needing A Rapid Response Team Intervention During Hospitalization, John Dixon Jan 2012

Exploratory Analysis Of The Relationship Between Present-On-Admission Factors Of Adult Inpatients And Risk For Needing A Rapid Response Team Intervention During Hospitalization, John Dixon

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Knowledge of how intrinsic present-on-admission patient factors such as age, gender, and pre-existing comorbid conditions contribute to patient risk during hospitalization is an important aspect for clinicians to consider when developing individualized plans of care based on patient needs. Health care providers could use such knowledge to screen and identify higher risk patients upon admission to the hospital. For those patients, the health care team could provide greater surveillance and vigilance in observation and monitoring. Such proactive interventions may reduce or avoid the occurrence of patient deterioration or need for a Rapid Response Team (RRT) intervention during hospitalization and thus, …

The Meaning Of Homelessness To Homeless Women Veterans, Robin E. Keene Jan 2012

The Meaning Of Homelessness To Homeless Women Veterans, Robin E. Keene

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Homelessness in America continues to be a pervasive problem, with veterans being disproportionately represented in this population. As the Iraq/Afghanistan war soldiers return to civilian life, worries about this population and the risk of homelessness is growing. Female soldier's roles in the military have expanded throughout the years and now include many combat roles, thus exposing them to the risks associated with combat. Female soldiers are twice as likely to have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD) than their male counterparts and are three to four times more likely to become homeless. Female homeless veterans have typically been excluded from participation …

Numerical Simulation Of The Base-Level Buffers And Buttresses Conceptual Model Of Fluvial Systems, Ronnie Tooyak Tingook Jan 2012

Numerical Simulation Of The Base-Level Buffers And Buttresses Conceptual Model Of Fluvial Systems, Ronnie Tooyak Tingook

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

A Buffer in fluvial stratigraphy is a potentiometric surface which defines either: a) the lowest possible depth to which streams will incise; or b) the maximum elevation to which aggradation will occur; together, these surfaces define a buffer zone. The buffer zone is tied down profile to a Buttress which defines base level for the system. A buttress shift, i.e., change in sea-level or shoreline-trajectory sensu (Catuneanu et al., 2009), will effect a change as to where the buffer zone exists for a fluvial system at a particular point in time. These terms were all introduced in (Holbrook et al., …

On-Road Measurement Of Nox And Co₂ Emissions From Biodiesel Produced From Different Feedstocks, Natchanok Pala-En Jan 2012

On-Road Measurement Of Nox And Co₂ Emissions From Biodiesel Produced From Different Feedstocks, Natchanok Pala-En

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

Biodiesel has generated increased interest in the US and elsewhere recently as an alternative to petroleum-derived diesel. Because it can be produced from domestic feedstocks such as soybeans, canola oil, and even recycled cooking oil, biodiesel can help reduce dependence on foreign petroleum. Due to its high oxygen content, biodiesel typically burns more completely than petroleum diesel, and thus has lower emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM). However, biodiesel may increase or decrease nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, depending on engine type, test cycle, and biodiesel feedstock. Therefore, the purpose of this …

On Primitivity And Dimension Of Finite Semifields And Their Planes, Linlin Chen Jan 2012

On Primitivity And Dimension Of Finite Semifields And Their Planes, Linlin Chen

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

The study of semifields was originated by L.E. Dickson in 1905 and was greatly developed in the 1960s by Albert, Knuth, Walker, Kleinfeld among others. Two problems of interest in this area are the primitivity of semifields and the dimension of semifields. For the first problem, we provide an equivalent condition for the right (or left) primitivity of finite semifields and with this result, we find that the classical Knuth binary semifields of order 2^{15}, 2^{17} and 2^{19} are all right and left primitive; the Albert semifields of order 2^i, where i=7, 9, 11, 13 are all primitive. Also we prove …

Characterization Of Mocr, A Gntr Transcriptional Regulator In Bradyrhizobium Japonicum, May Nyan Taw Jan 2012

Characterization Of Mocr, A Gntr Transcriptional Regulator In Bradyrhizobium Japonicum, May Nyan Taw

Biology Theses - Archive

The GntR family is one of the most widely distributed and prolific groups of the helix-turn-helix (HTH) transcription factors. In particular, microorganisms that live in complex, fast-changing environments such as soil tend to have a larger aggregate of the gntR regulatory genes. Bradyrhizobium japonicum is a Gram-negative soil bacterium capable of forming nodules and fixing nitrogen when in a symbiosis with the leguminous soybean plant (Glycine max). Although these metabolite-responsive gntR genes have been found to be involved in many cellular processes, little is known about their role in the B. japonicum-soybean symbiosis. The blr6977 gene (mocR), one of 35 …

Molecular Engineered Myoglobin With Unnatural Amino Acids As A Peroxidase, Kananke Sriyani Liyanage Jan 2012

Molecular Engineered Myoglobin With Unnatural Amino Acids As A Peroxidase, Kananke Sriyani Liyanage

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

Myoglobin (Mb) has been used as a model system to mimic other biologically important heme proteins like cytochrome P450 due to its ability to prepare mixed ligand complexes with different valencies, such as ferric, ferrous and ferryl species. It has been engineered to perform peroxidase, peroxygenase, monooxygenase and catalase activities. However, previous work on this area has shown that the distal histidine (H64) in the active of wild-type Mb is a critical residue, which destabilizes compound I, the reactive intermediate of the catalytic cycle (a ferryl ð-porphyrin radical cation). Therefore in this study we replaced H64 with a smaller residue, …

Predicting The Ancient Occurrence Of Coal Deposits Using Paleoclimate Modelling, Mandi Beck Jan 2012

Predicting The Ancient Occurrence Of Coal Deposits Using Paleoclimate Modelling, Mandi Beck

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Coals are accumulated and consolidated remains of plant material, which means that in order to form coals, a certain amount of annual precipitation is required. This study uses paleo-precipitation data obtained from Fast Ocean Atmosphere Model (FOAM) and predicts where paleo-coal deposits might occur. All predicted coal localities were plotted on paleogeographic reconstructions (obtained from the PALEOMAP Project) for thirteen time intervals from the Early Carboniferous to present. Once these predicted coal deposits were plotted, observed coals from the Boucot et al., 2012 database were then plotted on the same reconstructed basemaps. The predicted coal deposits were then compared with …

Arctic Arthropod Communities In Habitats Of Differing Shrub Abundance, Matthew E. Rich Jan 2012

Arctic Arthropod Communities In Habitats Of Differing Shrub Abundance, Matthew E. Rich

Biology Theses - Archive

Recent global warming, which has been severe in the Arctic, has caused advancement in the timing of snowmelt and expansion of shrubs into open tundra. Such an altered climate may directly and indirectly (via effects on vegetation) affect arctic arthropod populations. I conducted research at four sites in the vicinity of the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site at Toolik Field Station in northern Alaska in the summers of 2010 and 2011 to determine how vegetation and environmental variables affect arthropod abundance, diversity, and phenology (the timing of life history events) in habitats of differing shrub abundance. Shrub-dominated habitats …

The Role Of Life History In The Toxicity Of The Toxic Golden Haptophyte Prymnesium Parvum, Betty Zitoon Jan 2012

The Role Of Life History In The Toxicity Of The Toxic Golden Haptophyte Prymnesium Parvum, Betty Zitoon

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Prymnesium parvum is a harmful algal species that causes widespread fish kills. It is usually motile, but non-motile stages have been observed that may represent an encysted stage. The relationship of these life history changes to the abundance and acute toxicity to fish of P. parvum was studied. As part of research into factors regulating abundance and toxicity of this species, a series of experiments was conducted. The first was a semi-continuous culture experiment examining limiting nutrient (N vs. P), temperature (14 or 20 °C), and dilution rate (at four levels). Samples from the lower temperature generally exhibited greater acute …

Bioanalytical Lc-Ms: Streamlined Sampled Preparation And Novel Ambient Ionization Techniques, Samuel Hsiao-Chieh Yang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Bioanalysis has gained importance in the scientific at an exponential rate. The focus of these works attempt to seek new approaches towards faster and more efficient bioanalysis that require little to no sample preparation. One approach is the use of new restricted access media trap technologies to facilitate an online sample preparation platform. A demonstration of the advantages of RAM involves the trace level detection of bisphenol A, an environmental contaminant. A bulk derivatization strategy used in combination with RAM trap technologies is adopted to boost sensitivity without the use of traditional sample preparation methods. Another strategy is the use …

Regardless of practice settings, healthcare workers (HCWs) in Sub-Saharan Africa are either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. This mixed methods study measured the extent of HIV/AIDS stigma and the relationship between stigma and sociodemographic variables in a sample of 76 HIV positive HCWs. Qualitative aspects (n=20) explored how HIV positive HCWs manage personal health, stigma experiences in the workplace, and the HCWs role in reducing stigma in the workplace. Overall, HIV positive HCWs in this study experienced low stigma levels (Mean= 7.88, SD 12.90). Subscale means ranged from 0.09 (SD 0.28) for workplace stigma to 0.39 (SD 0.62) for verbal …

Phylogenetic Relationships And Feeding Behavior Of Neotropical Snail-Eating Snakes (Dipsadinae, Dipsadini), Coleman Matthew Sheehy Jan 2012

Phylogenetic Relationships And Feeding Behavior Of Neotropical Snail-Eating Snakes (Dipsadinae, Dipsadini), Coleman Matthew Sheehy

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The snake subfamily Dipsadinae contains more than 350 ecologically diverse species in about 32 genera. Members of the tribe Dipsadini are gastropod specialists, and many possess a suite of adaptations for eating snails. I tested chemosensory prey preference in Dipsas, Sibon and Tropidodipsas species. Additionally, I described the feeding behavior of Tropidodipsas annuliferus, T. philippii and Sibon nebulatus. All snakes preferred gastropod prey. Tropidodipsas philippii also showed strong interest in the earthworm scent and subsequently consumed earthworms. Snakes snagged or wedged snail shells on surface irregularities and extracted snails using muscular contractions of the body, representing an undescribed feeding behavior …

Chemostratigraphy And Geochemical Constraints On The Deposition Of The Bakken Formation, Williston Basin, Eastern Montana And Western North Dakota, David Nyrup Maldonado Jan 2012

Chemostratigraphy And Geochemical Constraints On The Deposition Of The Bakken Formation, Williston Basin, Eastern Montana And Western North Dakota, David Nyrup Maldonado

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The late Devonian-early Mississippian Bakken Formation was deposited in a structural-sedimentary intracratonic basin that extends across a large part of modern day North Dakota, eastern Montana, and the southern portion of Canada's Saskatchewan Province. The deposition of the Bakken Formation occurred during a fascinating period of geologic time that is linked to one of the five major mass extinctions. The occurrences of these mass extinctions are recorded worldwide as organic rich mud rocks similar to the ones found in the Bakken Formation. Collectively, the Bakken Formation consists of a middle dolomitic siltstone that is representative of a transgressive deposit and …

Heavy Metal Contamination Of Road Dust In Lanzhou, China, Michael Hiett Jan 2012

Heavy Metal Contamination Of Road Dust In Lanzhou, China, Michael Hiett

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Road dusts were collected from the streets of the city of Lanzhou, the capital and largest city of Gansu Province in Northwest China. The potential health hazard posed by contaminated road dusts may be considerable for certain sensitive populations. Specifically young children who, while exploring their environment by mouthing and touching, may inadvertently ingest polluted soils and dusts through hand-to-mouth-activity, and through mouthing contaminated objects. Lanzhou, once ranked as one of the 10 most polluted cities in the world, clearly has, in all likelihood many locales with elevated levels of pollutants in various environmental media (e.g., air, water, soil and …

Burger Cultures: Mcdonaldization And De-Mcdonaldization In Croatia And The U.S., Ashley Wendell Kranjac Jan 2012

Burger Cultures: Mcdonaldization And De-Mcdonaldization In Croatia And The U.S., Ashley Wendell Kranjac

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

The primary goal of this thesis is to contribute to critical/ social theory through food theory by examining the interactions between local (i.e., internal food trends) and delocalization/ globalization, which are external food trends in Croatia and the United States. I argue, the globalization process is visible in Croatian's adoption of processed foods and fast-food experiences, while the localization in the United States is observable in the re-creation of local, organic, and slower food practices. Subsets of Croatians are embarking on a path of monoculturalism, and conversely, subgroups in the United States are deconstructing and resisting the one common global …
