Resolutions And Tor Algebra Structures For Trivariate Monomial Ideals, Jared Lafayette Painter
Resolutions And Tor Algebra Structures For Trivariate Monomial Ideals, Jared Lafayette Painter
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
In this manuscript we explore properties of minimal free resolutions and their relationship to the Tor-algebra structure for trivariate monomial ideals. We begin with an in-depth analysis of minimal free resolutions of S = R / I, where R = k[x; y; z] is a polynomial ring over a field k, and I is a monomial ideal that is primary to the homogeneous maximal ideal m of R. We will de ne a special form of the minimal free resolution of S, and then determine when we get nonzero elements from I as entries in the matrices of the resolution. …
High Order Dns For Late Flow Transition, Ping Lu
High Order Dns For Late Flow Transition, Ping Lu
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
In this report, a new high order scheme for boundary points is introduced when calculating the derivative of smooth functions by Compact Scheme. The primitive function reconstruction method of ENO schemes is applied to obtain the conservative form of the Compact Scheme. Meanwhile, modified compact scheme is developed by using an effective shock detector to block upwinding compact scheme to cross the shock, a control function, and an adaptive scheme which uses some WENO flux near the shock. The new scheme makes the original upwinding compact scheme able to capture the shock sharper than WENO and, more important, keep high …
From Discrete To Continuous Models Of Cell Movement: An Application To Medical Implants, Alicia Prieto Langarica
From Discrete To Continuous Models Of Cell Movement: An Application To Medical Implants, Alicia Prieto Langarica
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Mathematical modeling of cell movement is needed to aid in the deeper understanding of vital processes such as embryogenesis, angiogenesis, tumor metastasis, and immune reactions to foreign bodies. In this work, cell movement and growth in response to external stimulus and the interactions between cells and the stimulus are considered. In order to model the random nature of the movement, a discrete model is created to simulate cells moving in the presence of a growing and moving stimulus distribution. The model also includes the depletion of the stimulus under the presence of cells. The discrete model is then upscaled, based …
A Study On The Two Component Periodic Shallow Water Systems, Caixia Chen
A Study On The Two Component Periodic Shallow Water Systems, Caixia Chen
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation we study the generalized periodic two-component Camassa-Holm system and the generalized periodic two-component Dullin-Gottwald-Holm system, which can be derived from the Euler equation with nonzero constant vorticity in shallow water waves moving over a linear shear flow. The precise blow-up scenarios of strong solutions and several results of blow-up solutions with certain initial profiles are described in detail. The exact blow-up rates are also determined. Finally, the sufficient conditions for global solutions are established.
A Doubling Technique For The Power Method Transformations, Mohan Pant, Todd C. Headrick
A Doubling Technique For The Power Method Transformations, Mohan Pant, Todd C. Headrick
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive
Power method polynomials are used for simulating non-normal distributions with specified product moments or L-moments. The power method is capable of producing distributions with extreme values of skew (L-skew) and kurtosis (L-kurtosis). However, these distributions can be extremely peaked and thus not representative of real-world data. To obviate this problem, two families of distributions are introduced based on a doubling technique with symmetric standard normal and logistic power method distributions. The primary focus of the methodology is in the context of L-moment theory. As such, L-moment based systems of equations are derived for simulating univariate and multivariate non-normal distributions with …

Performance Of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (Pccp) In Water Applilcations, Rahul Manda
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
The analysis of water pipes failure data is of great importance as it has a significant impact society and the environment. These failures also have the overall impact on the financial burden on the water industry. This thesis evaluates the failure rate of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP), which is one of the most conventional rigid pipes and are extensively used as the water and wastewater pipeline in the US and around the world. A statistical analysis of the failure rate based on the diameter size over multiple years will help in determining the performance of PCCP pipes. Also, the …

Determining The Effectiveness Of Chlorine-Based Biofilm Control On The Friction Factors Of Large Diameter Pipelines In Raw Water, Shelly Stamler Hattan
Determining The Effectiveness Of Chlorine-Based Biofilm Control On The Friction Factors Of Large Diameter Pipelines In Raw Water, Shelly Stamler Hattan
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Large diameter transmission mains pumping raw water experience capacity loss during the summer months due to the growth of biofilm. The loss of capacity impacts power costs at a time when power is obtained at a premium. Biofilm growth varies with the seasons and varies along the length of the pipeline. Biofilm growth and decay directly impacts the friction factors. Future design work should consider a seasonal friction factor rather than an aged friction factor over time. The method of controlling biofilm is with the application of chloramines at the lake pump stations. This study compares the difference between little to …

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
According to the new Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) and 1993 AASHTO flexible pavement design guide, Resilient Modulus (MR) has been used extensively as an important material property in structure design of pavement. The modulus is used as the primary input parameter to determine the stiffness parameters and constitutive behavior of pavement components. The system of pavement basically consists of the layers of surface, base, subbase (optional), and subgrade. The compacted subgrade soils supporting pavement structure are typically unsaturated with degrees of saturation varying from 75 to 90%. The effect of unsaturated soil behavior on the mechanical properties of …

Productivity Analysis Of Box Jacking, Hossein Tavakoli
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Trenchless Technology (TT) offers methods to install utilities through the ground without damaging the surface. Box Jacking is a trenchless method for installation of prefabricated box and drainage structures without digging a trench. The concept of box jacking is similar to pipe jacking operations by first excavating an entry shaft, building the thrust block and concrete base, and setting jacking equipment. The process starts with pushing boxes while excavating at face, however, the movement of each box is achieved each time excavation at the shield is completed. Additionally, a pilot tube might be required in advance of box jacking operations. …

Assessment And Rating Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls, Noel Janacek
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls have been increasingly utilized in the United States since 1972 and in Texas since 1979. MSE walls provide earth retention for commercial, industrial and transportation projects throughout Texas. Within the transportation industry, the traditional design life of MSE walls is 75 years, with new projects requiring 100 year design life. The millions of square feet of existing MSE walls are generally less than half of the anticipated design life, making identifying and assessing the existing wall inventory a significant asset management component for optimizing maintenance expenditures. This thesis proposes and applies a system that assesses …

No Utopia Is An Island: The Ecosystem Of Utopias In Paul Mcauley's Quiet War Saga, Kerri Beauchesne
English Theses - Archive
In this thesis, I argue that a new, ambitious variety of literary utopia, which I call an ecosystem utopia, has developed over the past forty years, chiefly in science fiction and fantasy. My primary examples are Paul McAuley's The Quiet War and Gardens of the Sun. An ecosystem utopia portrays a dynamic network of societies in a text's fictional time and space. Like a traditional utopia, it explores the structure and functioning of individual utopias, and like the critical utopia, their flaws and ambiguities. Sociopolitically complex, it explores threads of influence, alliance, conflict, exploitation, and dominance within and between multiple …

Networked Authorship: A Community Of Creators In Born-Digital Literature, Tricia Jost Dupew
English Theses - Archive
Authorship of born-digital literature exists in a state referent to but decidedly apart from authorship of more traditional printed texts. Ranging far from the idea that the author exists in a state of solitary genius, authorship in born-digital literature is a collective endeavor which both reacts to and anticipates an ongoing cultural shift from material goods produced in an industrial setting to immaterial goods produced in the networked environment of the cultural collective. By examining the creation of born-digital texts, the placement of the reader within the textual and multimedia experience itself, and the influence of the intelligent machine in …

Communication is the process of transferring information between multiple entities. We study the communication process between different entities that are modeled as multiple agents. To study the interactions between these entities we use Game theory, which is a mathematical tool that is used to model the interactions and decision process of these multiple players/agents. In the presence of multiple players their interactions are generally modelled as a stochastic game. Here we assume that the communication medium, protocols and language are already present in this multiagent system. We address the question of information selection in the communication process. In this thesis, we develop …

Adaptive Dynamic Programming For High-Dimensional, Multicollinear State Spaces, Bancha Ariyajunya
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Dynamic programming (DP) is a mathematical programming method for optimizing a system changing over time and has been used to solve multi-stage optimization problems in manufacturing systems, environmental engineering, and many other fields. Exact solutions are only possible for small problems or under very limiting restrictions, but computationally practical approximate DP methods now exist. Most continuous-state problems require discretization of the state space. A design and analysis of computer experiments (DACE) approach for approximate DP uses experimental design and statistical modeling to approximate the value function in continuous-state problems. However, ideal experimental designs are orthogonal, and when the state variables …

Cnt Reinforced Epoxy Foamed And Electrospun Nano-Fiber Interlayer Systems For Manufacturing Lighter And Stronger Featherweight Composites, Vasileios M. Drakonakis
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Multiple works have been performed in improving carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites especially in terms of strength so delamination, which is the major defect in laminated composites, is prevented. Nevertheless, there is not much focus on improving conventional CFRP systems in terms of weight especially when these are used in primary structures. This work questions whether lighter and at the same time stronger CFRP composites can be manufactured in order to replace conventional CFRP systems in major applications. Under this perspective, this study demonstrates that inducing controlled porosity may offer a systemic approach for manufacturing light weight carbon fiber …
The Private Sectors Pivotal Role In Combating Human Trafficking, Jonathan Todres
The Private Sectors Pivotal Role In Combating Human Trafficking, Jonathan Todres
Faculty Publications By Year
Human trafficking is big business, with industry estimates running in the billions of dollars annually. Much of that profit accrues to traffickers, illegal profiteers, and organized crime groups. However, the private sector also reaps economic benefits, directly and indirectly, from human trafficking. Despite these economic realities, the dominant approach to combating human trafficking has been to rely almost exclusively on governments and social services organizations to do the job. Little has been asked of the private sector. Two important bills - one adopted by the State of California and the other introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives - might …

Gender has become one of the most politicized issues in South Asian countries over the past 100 years. They were expected to cook for the family, clean the house, feed their children, look after all family members, and give birth to a male child. When a woman gave birth to a male child she was considered very respectable in the family. Son preference is one of the oldest issues in most societies, with males given preferential treatment over females. In spite of the rapid advancement in education and communication, the desire for a son continues to remain (NIPS, 1992). Sons …
