"Tuning" The Disciplines, Norman L. Jones

History Faculty Publications

Since March of 2009, the Utah System of Higher Education has been a partner with the Lumina Foundation for Education in the Tuning USA project, Lumina’s first experiment in introducing the European concept of degree “tuning” to American academia. Developed in the European Union as a way to create common degree standards across multiple nations, “tuning” is a methodology whereby subject-area teams develop criterion-referenced learning outcomes and competencies for particular degrees. It is a faculty-led approach that involves seeking input from students, recent graduates, and employers in order to create a common understanding of what students should know, understand, and …

Atypical Neural Responses To Phonological Detail In Children With Developmental Language Impairments, Lisa M.D. Archibald, Marc F. Joanisse Jan 2012

Atypical Neural Responses To Phonological Detail In Children With Developmental Language Impairments, Lisa M.D. Archibald, Marc F. Joanisse

Paediatrics Publications

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a developmental disorder affecting language learning across a number of domains. These difficulties are thought to be related to difficulties processing auditory speech, given findings of imperfect auditory processing across nonspeech tones, individual speech sounds and syllables. However the relationship of auditory difficulties to language development remains unclear. Perceiving connected speech involves resolving coarticulation, the imperceptible blending of speech movements across adjacent sounds, which gives rise to subtle variations in speech sounds. The present study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine neural responses to coarticulation in school age children with and without SLI. Atypical neural …

A Convex Relaxation Approach To Fat/Water Separation With Minimum Label Description, Abraam S. Soliman, Jing Yuan, James A. White, Terry M. Peters, Charles A. Mckenzie Jan 2012

A Convex Relaxation Approach To Fat/Water Separation With Minimum Label Description, Abraam S. Soliman, Jing Yuan, James A. White, Terry M. Peters, Charles A. Mckenzie

Paediatrics Publications

While Magnetic Resonance Imaging is capable of separating water and fat components in the body, mapping of magnetic field inhomogeneities is essential for the successful application of this process. In this study, we address the problem of field map estimation using a convex-relaxed max-flow method. We propose a novel two-stage approach that leads to the global optimum of the proposed problem. The first stage minimizes the signal residuals via a convexrelaxed minimum description length (MDL)-based approach. The MDL-based labeling model penalizes the total number of appearing labels, which helps to avoid field map errors when abrupt changes in field homogeneity …

Bmp Signaling Induces Visceral Endoderm Differentiation Of Xen Cells And Parietal Endoderm, Agnieszka Paca, Cheryle A. Séguin, Melanie Clements, Michael Ryczko, Janet Rossant, Tristan A. Rodriguez, Tilo Kunath Jan 2012

Bmp Signaling Induces Visceral Endoderm Differentiation Of Xen Cells And Parietal Endoderm, Agnieszka Paca, Cheryle A. Séguin, Melanie Clements, Michael Ryczko, Janet Rossant, Tristan A. Rodriguez, Tilo Kunath

Paediatrics Publications

The extraembryonic endoderm of mammals is essential for nutritive support of the fetus and patterning of the early embryo. Visceral and parietal endoderm are major subtypes of this lineage with the former exhibiting most, if not all, of the embryonic patterning properties. Extraembryonic endoderm (XEN) cell lines derived from the primitive endoderm of mouse blastocysts represent a cell culture model of this lineage, but are biased towards parietal endoderm in culture and in chimeras. In an effort to promote XEN cells to adopt visceral endoderm character we have mimicked different aspects of the in vivo environment. We found that BMP …

BACKGROUND: The incidence of medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) was estimated using the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP) in Canada over a three-year period. Data regarding mutations associated with MCADD cases were collected wherever available. METHODS: Data were collected over a 36-month period using a monthly mailed questionnaire distributed through the CPSP to more than 2500 Canadian paediatricians, medical geneticists and paediatric pathologists. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: During the three years of MCADD surveillance, 46 confirmed cases out of a total of 71 reported cases were found - an average of approximately 15 cases per year. This rate is lower than …

School Closure Decision-Making Processes: Problems And Prospects, Bill Irwin, Mark Seasons Jan 2012

School Closure Decision-Making Processes: Problems And Prospects, Bill Irwin, Mark Seasons

Faculty Publications

This paper explores the issue of the permanent closures of public schools in Ontario. School closure processes are highly (and bitterly) contested, rife with conflict, and with few exceptions, harshly criticized by school and community stakeholders who see closures as a loss of irreplaceable social infrastructure. There is a need for a more nuanced planning style that acknowledges the realities of politics, unequal power relations and the validity of community residents' needs and values. To better understand the consequences of school closures upon communities, the authors evaluate the historical and current school closure decision-making process in Ontario. This entails a four …

Forearm Orientation In Hadrosauridae (Dinosauria: Ornithopoda) And Implications For Museum Mounts, Phil Senter Jan 2012

Forearm Orientation In Hadrosauridae (Dinosauria: Ornithopoda) And Implications For Museum Mounts, Phil Senter

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Skeletons of hadrosaurids (“duck-billed dinosaurs”) are usually mounted with palms facing caudally (posteriorly). To achieve this, the radius is articulated with the medial (ulnar) condyle of the humerus instead of the lateral (radial) condyle, which would be unique among vertebrates if it were correct. However, articulated specimens reveal that in hadrosaurids the radius articulates with the lateral condyle of the humerus, as in other vertebrates, and the palms face caudomedially, though more medially than caudally. Active pronation is prevented by the shapes of the radial and ulnar shafts and by the lack of rolling articulations between radius and ulna. This …

More "Dinosaur" And "Pterosaur" Rock Art That Isn't, Phil Senter Jan 2012

More "Dinosaur" And "Pterosaur" Rock Art That Isn't, Phil Senter

College of Health, Science, and Technology

To support claims of the coexistence of humans with dinosaurs and pterosaurs, young-earth creationist authors have identified several pieces of ancient rock art as depictions of dinosaurs or pterosaurs. Here, nine such claims are investigated. An alleged pterosaur painting in Black Dragon Canyon, Utah, is actually not a single painting. Its "head" and "neck" are a painting of a person with outstretched arms. Its torso and limbs are those of a painting of a second person with outstretched arms, whose body continues into the "pterosaur's" "wing." The other "wing" is a painting of a horned serpent. The three paintings only …

New Dromaeosaurids (Dinosauria: Theropoda) From The Lower Cretaceous Of Utah, And The Evolution Of The Dromaeosaurid Tail., Phil Senter, James I. Kirkland, Donald D. Deblieux, Scott Madsen, Natalie Toth

College of Health, Science, and Technology

The Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation (Early Cretaceous, Barremian?--Aptian) of Utah has yielded a rich theropod fauna, including the coelurosaur Nedcolbertia justinhofmanni, the therizinosauroid Falcarius utahensis, the troodontid Geminiraptor suarezarum, and the dromaeosaurid Utahraptor ostrommaysorum. Recent excavation has uncovered three new dromaeosaurid specimens. One specimen, which we designate the holotype of the new genus and species Yurgovuchia doellingi, is represented by a partial axial skeleton and a partial left pubis. A second specimen consists of a right pubis and a possibly associated radius. The third specimen consists of a tail skeleton that is unique among known Cedar …

A Girl’S Path To Prostitution: Linking Caregiver Adversity To Child Susceptibility, Joan A. Reid Jan 2012

A Girl’S Path To Prostitution: Linking Caregiver Adversity To Child Susceptibility, Joan A. Reid

Faculty Books

Although the Trafficking Victims Protection Act defined girls exploited in prostitution as child sex trafficking victims, these youth are often misidentified and marginalized. Due to victim inaccessibility, emergent research regarding the problem lacks theoretical framing or sufficient data for quantitative analysis. This study assesses an intergenerational path from caregiver adversity to child exploitation in prostitution drawn from Agnew’s general strain theory using structural equation modeling. Findings supported the hypotheses, revealing that highly stressed mothers were more likely to abuse their daughters. Consequently, maltreated girls more commonly attempted escape by running away, used substances earlier, and reported higher sexual denigration toward …

Child, Parent, And Healthcare Professionals' Perspectives On Hiv Infection Status Disclosure To Children, Grace Gachanja Jan 2012

Child, Parent, And Healthcare Professionals' Perspectives On Hiv Infection Status Disclosure To Children, Grace Gachanja

Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award

HIV infected parents face great challenges when contemplating and performing disclosure of theirs and their children's illnesses to their infected and noninfected children. HIV disclosure guidelines for a parent's and child's illness do not exist in resource-poor nations. This hinders and impedes the delivery of disclosure from parent to child. This qualitative phenomenological study, based on the disease progression theory and the consequence theory of HIV disclosure, was conducted to understand the lived experiences of HIV-infected parents and their children living in Kenya before, during, and after disclosure of a parent's and child's HIV infection status. Thirty four participants consisting …

The purpose of this study, and primary research question, was to examine the relationships among early childhood factors, food security, and family medical insurance and childhood obesity. There are many factors associated with the overweight and obesity epidemic. Hence, creating solutions must be addressed on various platforms such as early childhood influences, food security/insecurity, and family availability of health insurance. Relevant and aggregate data on factors affecting childhood obesity could potentially lead to age appropriate interventions to prevent childhood obesity and its sequelae. The literature noted the social cognitive theory in addressing the relationship between parents, the environment, and childhood …

The Impact Of Facebook Access In Creating A Sense Of Community In Tourism And Recreation Classes, Lorie A. Tuma Jan 2012

The Impact Of Facebook Access In Creating A Sense Of Community In Tourism And Recreation Classes, Lorie A. Tuma

Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award

Previous research has indicated that college students use social networking sites such as Facebook to establish friendships, maintain communication, and foster a sense of community; research also has indicated that many college instructors do not. Many college faculty acknowledge the importance of a sense of community in the classroom but are reluctant to try social media as a way to enhance student motivation, affective learning, and classroom climate. The purpose of this ex post facto, causal comparative study was to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in tourism and recreation students' self-reported sense of community when an instructor's …

Envisioning A Postfeminist Composition Studies, Melissa Miles Jan 2012

Envisioning A Postfeminist Composition Studies, Melissa Miles

English Dissertations - Archive

We must look at the changing sociological conditions that challenge many of the foundations of composition studies in order to develop the discipline. Although postfeminism is evident within academic and popular culture, so far postfeminism has been little addressed in composition studies. In the composition classroom, we can see evidence of postfeminism in the student resistance to overt and subvert expressions of feminist pedagogy and/or content. The essentialist and emancipatory elements of both feminism and composition studies not only are limiting pedagogically, but, in my view, also in themselves generate student resistance. I argue that, in order to mediate this …

Cmc V/S Ftfc- Media Effect On Millennials' Self-Disclosure Behavior, Vidisha Vijaykumar Bhopatkar Jan 2012

Cmc V/S Ftfc- Media Effect On Millennials' Self-Disclosure Behavior, Vidisha Vijaykumar Bhopatkar

Communication Theses - Archive

This study examines the effect that computer-mediated communication (CMC) and face-to-face communication (FTFC) have on Millennials' communication behaviors. The study specifically focuses on the self-disclosure aspect and attempts to analyze the possible effects that CMC and FTF communication may have on Millennials' self-disclosure behaviors. The methodology included a pre-test survey, followed by an experiment, and a post-test survey. Quantitative data analysis showed that for self-disclosure, Millennials do not exclusively consider one medium suitable over another. For them, the suitability of a medium is dependent on the task for which the medium is used.

Passive Wireless Antenna Sensors For Crack Detection And Shear/Compression Sensing, Irshad Mohammad Jan 2012

Passive Wireless Antenna Sensors For Crack Detection And Shear/Compression Sensing, Irshad Mohammad

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Despite the fact that engineering components and structures are carefully designed against fatigue failures, 50 to 90% of mechanical failures are due to fatigue crack formation. The severity of the failure depends on both the crack length and its orientation with respect to the loading direction. Many types of sensors are available that can detect fatigue crack propagation. But, crack orientation detection has been rarely reported in the literature. We evaluated a patch antenna sensor capable of detecting crack propagation as well as crack orientation changes. The aim of the sensors would be to evaluate the real-time health condition of …

Rhetoric, Composition And Preaching: What Homiletic Pedagogy Can Learn About Imitation From Composition Pedagogies, Calvin Frederick Pearson Jan 2012

Rhetoric, Composition And Preaching: What Homiletic Pedagogy Can Learn About Imitation From Composition Pedagogies, Calvin Frederick Pearson

English Dissertations - Archive

Across the centuries there have been thousands of books and articles written about preaching and writing. Homiletics and Composition Studies have this in common. A great difference comes when one looks for information about the teaching of these two closely related fields. Composition Studies has a great abundance of books, articles, journals available to the teacher of composition; Homiletics has only a dozen or so, and those when read yield very little practical guidance as to how to teach preaching. This project seeks to show how the pedagogy of composition can inform the pedagogy of homiletics. Through the study of …

Bug-Eyed Monsters And The Encounter With The Postcolonial Other: An Analysis Of The Common Postcolonial Themes And Characteristics In Science Fiction, Paul David Lee Jan 2012

Bug-Eyed Monsters And The Encounter With The Postcolonial Other: An Analysis Of The Common Postcolonial Themes And Characteristics In Science Fiction, Paul David Lee

English Dissertations - Archive

Recently, a number of non-Western postcolonial authors have begun to use science fiction to express some of the common concerns of non-Western cultures such as hybridity, alterity and subalternity, as well as other issues like those concerning the body and community/hybridity, the future of former colonies extrapolated from colonial history, and encounters with the Other. This trend has also been common for Western writers from the beginning of science fiction as a distinct genre, and many Western authors have used it to highlight the superiority of Western empires, while others have used it as a tool to emphasize their negative …

Liquid Assets: The Functions Of Forgetting In Shakespeare's Second Henriad, Jonni Koonce Dunn Jan 2012

Liquid Assets: The Functions Of Forgetting In Shakespeare's Second Henriad, Jonni Koonce Dunn

English Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation examines Shakespeare's second historical tetralogy in which the playwright employs forgetfulness despite its pathologized position in early modern culture and its seeming incompatibility with history. In Richard II, the King's forgetfulness attempts self-stabilization while his sustained forgetfulness, in response to the historical sublime, results in tragic poetry. Nietzschean ideas of judicious forgetfulness and plasticity, Langerian concepts of comedy, and the Andersonian notion of a unifying national amnesia inform a comparison of the functions of forgetfulness for Henry IV, Prince Hal, and Falstaff in 1 Henry IV. In 2 Henry IV forgetfulness deploys in the figure of Rumor, who …

Photoelectrochemical Activity Of Titanium Dioxide Thin Films, Aida Mehdinezhad Roshan Jan 2012

Photoelectrochemical Activity Of Titanium Dioxide Thin Films, Aida Mehdinezhad Roshan

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is considered as an oxide semiconductor with several unique properties, including environmental sensing capabilities, biocompatibility and photocurrent generation, long-term stability, cost efficiency, and chemical inertness. TiO2 thin films have a wide range of applications in dye-sensitized solar cells. TiO2 films have been deposited on two different substrates, aluminum and titanium. Two different methods used for deposition of the thin films namely: Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). In order to study the effect of roughness of the substrate on photocurrent generation of the deposited films, one group of substrates were “patterned” by Electrolytic Plasma …

Indi'n Humor, Tricksters, And Stereotype In Selected Works Of Gerald Vizenor, Thomas King, And Sherman Alexie, Corby J. Baxter

English Dissertations - Archive

Humor in American Indian literature is a popular and important area of study. Yet, to date few full-length studies have compared the role of humor in Gerald Vizenor, Thomas King, and Sherman Alexie. This study offers a comparison of the ways three of the best-known American Indian humorists use humor to talk about contemporary Native American experience. The dissertation explores the way humor--especially trickster humor--is used to re-imagine the Indian stereotype. The dissertation asserts, first, that American Indian stereotypes are created through American, utopian impulses and that the stereotypes are then distributed by colonialism to make both North American identity …

Lumped Parameter Modeling Of Fluid Line Dynamics With Turbulent Flow Conditions, Yi-Wei Huang Jan 2012

Lumped Parameter Modeling Of Fluid Line Dynamics With Turbulent Flow Conditions, Yi-Wei Huang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A procedure for obtaining rational polynomial transfer functions representing ordinary differential equations for time domain transient response simulations of systems with fluid transmission lines with incompressible turbulent flow is formulated and presented. The method is based on the use of an inverse frequency least squares algorithm applied to the distributed parameter model for laminar flow with added lumped resistance to match the additional resistance associated with turbulence. Guidelines for using the algorithm are included with focus on the use of weighting parameters, the number of resonant modes to be included, and the bandwidth of the pressure/flow pulsation dynamics in the …
