Age Differences In Attraction To Instrumental And Symbolic Organziational Attributes, Katherine Joan Roberto
Age Differences In Attraction To Instrumental And Symbolic Organziational Attributes, Katherine Joan Roberto
Management Dissertations - Archive
As the demographic landscape in business continues to get more diverse, the need to examine what attracts individuals of different demographic attributes to organizations becomes increasingly more important. This study examined the extent to which individuals across different age groups were attracted to organizations offering different incentives. Specifically, it examined whether the presence of symbolic attributes (work-life balance or corporate social responsibility statements) affected people of different ages in their ratings of attraction to organizations. It also looked at the effect of these symbolic attributes on attraction to an organization over and above the instrumental attribute of pay. The results …

International firms compete in the United States in both the market and non-market arenas (Doh, & Lucea, 2013). The international management literature has a long history of research focused on market competition but, non-market competition has been largely ignored (Lawton, McGuire & Rajwani, 2013). At the same time, there is a large and increasing amount of money being spent by foreign firms on lobbying and other non-market activities in America. In an effort to aid in our understanding of foreign firms who engage in corporate political activity (CPA) in the United States, I investigated foreign firms that engage in CPA …

The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard is the latest video coding project developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) which involves the International Telecommunication Unit (ITU-T) Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standardization organizations. The HEVC standard is an optimization of the previous standard H.264/AVC (Advanced Video coding) with the bit-rate reduction of about 50% at the same visual quality. The most complex and time consuming process in the HEVC encoding is the motion estimation. The process involves finding the best matching block in the current frame by comparing it …
What If Hewlett And Packard Had Started A Band Instead?... Denton Texas' Music Scene As Economic Cluster And Its Broader Implications For The City's Economy, Michael Seman
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
A growing body of research examines the production processes, economic activity, and symbolic value of the arts in the urban economy. This research often broadly considers all arts disciplines together, masking structural and operational differences amongst them. Research detailing popular music and its relationship with the urban economy is minimal. Prior research tangentially acknowledges that local music scenes function as economic clusters, but little detailing of their dynamics as such exists. The bulk of attention is paid to how these clusters operate in the framework of the broader music industry and not how they develop or impact their surrounding urban …

Individual Motivational Factors Impacting United States Air Force Reserve Recruiting, Brian E. Wish
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
This research seeks to discern the latent motivational factors that prompt individuals to join the Air Force Reserve. It is hypothesized that the decision to affiliate has a large non-economic component; this study also seeks to determine whether enlistment motivations have been stable over the last decades or whether motivations have recently evolved in light of over a decade of constant armed conflict. The project utilizes a questionnaire given at selected reserve units to members who are in their first few months of service. These surveys consisted of both motivational and discouragement panels of questions; returned questionnaires were analyzed using factor …

Modern mobile devices are already matching and surpassing HDTV sets in terms of graphics capabilities. They often feature high density retina screens with 1280X720, 1920X1080 and even higher resolutions. But, the density of the information seen will depend on several factors. The visual perception of the video played on these devices mainly depends on the user, where and how the video is consumed, quality of the video perceived changes when in dark room to that of bright sun light, device held at an arm's distance to device kept away on a table. Streaming high bitrate video to these devices when …

Big data requires exceptional technologies to efficiently process large quantities of data within tolerable elapsed times. While the potential benefits of Big Data are significant, there are still a lot of technical challenges that must be solved to fully realize this potential for Big Data. For processing, transporting and storing large data sets of enormous sizes, data need to be greatly compressed. In this thesis, several sparse sensing algorithms - compressive sensing (CS), co-prime sampling and nested sampling are studied for Big Data, in theory and applications.Error performance bounds of noisy compressive sensing are derived based on information theory and estimation …
Biological Aging And Peer Victimization: The Role Of Social Support In Telomere Length And Health Outcomes, Maria Elizabeth Guarneri-White
Biological Aging And Peer Victimization: The Role Of Social Support In Telomere Length And Health Outcomes, Maria Elizabeth Guarneri-White
Psychology Theses - Archive
The health benefits of social support have been well documented in the literature (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Newman & Roberts, 2013), as have the somatic and psychological outcomes of being the victim of bullying (Wang, Nansel, & Iannotti, 2011; Knack, Jensen-Campbell, & Baum, 2011). Recent research has looked at the separate role each of these interpersonal processes play in cellular aging via the study of telomeres, which are the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division (Epel, 2009). Data indicate that stress can accelerate this shortening, leading to premature cell death and a shortened …

It is well established that women and men respond differently to drugs of abuse. Women begin use at an earlier age, progress through the stages of addiction more quickly, and are more vulnerable to relapse than men. Through the support of both human and animal literature, it is clear that one of the driving factors mediating this difference is ovarian hormones. Increases in the ovarian hormone estradiol have been linked to potentiated acquisition of cocaine administration, increased responding for cocaine in the maintenance of addiction, and increased cue-reactivity in female rats. Recent research has begun to characterize the primary reward …

Externalizing problems, such as hyperactivity, inattention, and defiance, that emerge early in life put children on a path toward numerous adverse outcomes, including delinquency, academic failure, and substance abuse. Using a family study design, the current investigation sought to identify predictors of externalizing problems in preschool-aged children, with a specific focus on early executive functioning skills and maternal depression and education. Families with two children between the ages of 2.5 and 5.5 were recruited from the Dallas/Fort-Worth Metroplex and participated in a lab visit at The University of Texas at Arlington. The current study included 196 children (males = 102; …
Phoresis Of A Solid Particle In Real Fluid, Yuan Ting Wu
Phoresis Of A Solid Particle In Real Fluid, Yuan Ting Wu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
For micro- and nano-scale particles driven by interfacial non-contact forces in fluid, known as phoresis, this dissertation provides a general formulation and a systematic investigation. It starts with an analytical continuum-mechanics formulation that covers various important aspects of an interfacial structure, including viscosity and mass density variations as well as a body force field, in real fluid. It then reduces to specific solutions due to characteristic mechanisms. A closed-form analytical solution to the case of viscosity variation (which manifests itself as Navier's slip boundary condition) is derived. Furthermore, a novel mechanism for thermophoretic mobility driven by near-surface phase transition is …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
This thesis presents the development and implementation of an autonomous obstacle avoidance algorithm for UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle). The research improves the prior work by enhancing the obstacle avoidance capability to handle moving obstacle as well as stationary obstacles. A mathematical representation of the area of operation with obstacles is formulated by PTEM (Probabilistic Threat Exposure Map). The PTEM quantifies the risk in being at a position in an area with different types of threat. Threat in this context means UGV getting close to or running into stationary and moving obstacles. A LRF (Laser Range Finder) sensor mounted on the …

Human engineers have been trying long to mimic creations of nature for their own benefits. One such area of interest is the insect based micro flapping wing flyers for their wide employment in commercial as well as military applications. These micro air vehicles (MAVs) are capable of performing acts that can be too dangerous for humans to perform, such as tactical reconnaissance in a combat zone. The maneuverability required of these MAVs call for a careful design and thorough study of their aerodynamic performance. This research goal is to provide an estimation of the forces generated during the flapping motion …
Scaling Laws For Radial Foil Bearings, Srikanth Honavara Prasad
Scaling Laws For Radial Foil Bearings, Srikanth Honavara Prasad
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The effects of fluid pressurization, structural deformation of the compliant members and heat generation in foil bearings make the design and analysis of foil bearings very complicated. The complex fluid-structural-thermal interactions in foil bearings also make modeling efforts challenging because these phenomena are governed by highly non-linear partial differential equations. Consequently, comparison of various bearing designs require detailed calculation of the flow fields (velocities, pressures), bump deflections (structural compliance) and heat transfer phenomena (viscous dissipation in the fluid, frictional heating, temperature profile etc.,) resulting in extensive computational effort(time/hardware). To obviate rigorous computations and aid in feasibility assessments of foil bearings …

Stiffness Response Of Chemically Stabilized Sulfate Rich Soil Via Resonant Column Test, Miftah Semane
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Stabilization of expansive soils using lime and cement additives have been used by practitioners over the last few years. However, recent heaving and premature pavement failures in lime and cement-treated subgrades containing sulfates led to questioning the validity of calcium based stabilization. When expansive soils containing sulfates are treated with calcium-based stabilizers, the calcium from the stabilizer reacts with soil sulfates and alumina to form the expansive mineral Ettringite.A series of resonant column (RC) tests (ASTM D 4015-92) was conducted on several chemically stabilized specimens of high-plasticity, sulfate-rich expansive clay from Sherman, Texas. Test results were used to assess the …

Truth Is, Sentence-Initial Shell Nouns Are Showing Up Bare, Laurel Smith Stvan
Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive
In one subtype of English shell noun construction, the noun serves as the subject in a pre-clausal unit, e.g., “The thing is.” Shell noun NPs have mainly been investigated synchronically, often as case studies of particular noun types, with the bare forms only ever briefly noted. Data from COCA and COHA was examined to collect the range of sentence-initial bare form shell nouns, to track any changes in their use occurring between 1810 and 2012. The findings suggest that, referentially, these abstract bare forms function differently than bare concrete count nouns, and distributionally, that bare shell forms are used increasingly …

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) and a highly preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States (U.S.). There are more than 79 million Americans infected with HPV and approximately 14 million newly diagnosed cases ofHPV annually (United States Department of Health & Human Services [DHHS], n.d.). More than 40 strains of HPV can lead to genital warts and various types of cancers, mostly cervical cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013a). Although the HPV vaccine can prevent approximately 21,000 HPV related cancers, uptake of the HPV vaccine remains suboptimal. …
What Are The Therapeutic Strategies Used By Mental Health Providers To Create A Therapeutic Alliance And Effective Patient- Provider Relationship For Psychotropic Medication Adherence?, Agnes Okoro
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
The annual cost of medication non - adherence problems in United States (U.S.) is approximately $100 billion dollars (Heesch, 2013; Julius, Novitsky, & Dublin, 2009). Mental health providers often encounter psychotropic medication non adherence among incarcerated persons with schizophrenia despite their alliance- enhancing efforts, resulting in increased violence, hospitalization, and an impact on economy. Therapeutic alliance, an effective and collaborative relationship between the health care provider and the patient has a positive association with treatment adherence as supported by the result of many studies (Julius et al., 2009; Kvrgic, Cavelli, Beck, Rusch, & Vaulth, 2013 ; McCabe et al., 2012). …

Analyzing The Value Of Mixed Use Urban Infill: An Exploratory Analysis On Changes In Property Values And Demographics In Local Initiatives Of Dallas And Fort Worth Texas, Matthew A. Ables
Public Affairs Theses - Archive
Mixed-use infill development has gained national attention as a strategy for revitalization and redevelopment for cities. The strategy is viewed by "Smart Growth" proponents and New Urbanists as a potential solution to sprawling urban forms and a potential cure for many problems associated with auto-dependence. However, this strategy is not new, and it has been debated through different disciplines in relation to its true impacts on communities and cities. Yet, the discussion on infill has centered upon measuring the amount of infill occuring, and the economic impacts of residential infill. This thesis utilizes a descriptive analysis to observe property value …
Weight Modules Of Orthosymplectic Lie Superalgebras, Thomas Lynn Ferguson
Weight Modules Of Orthosymplectic Lie Superalgebras, Thomas Lynn Ferguson
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
A long-standing problem in representation theory is the classification of all simple weight modules of the classical Lie superalgebras. This problem was reduced to the classification of simple bounded highest weight modules. The latter classification has been accomplished for all classical Lie superalgebras except for the orthosymplectic series osp(m|2n) where m = 1, 3, 4, 5, 6. In this thesis, we complete the classification of the simple bounded highest weight modules of osp(1|2n) (i.e., for m = 1). The classification is obtained by developing constraints on primitive vectors in tensor products of bounded (Weyl) and finite-dimensional osp(1|2n)-modules.
