Dynamics Of Thermalization In Classical Three-Dimensional Many-Body Systems: Non-Maxwellian Distributions And The Role Of Anisotropic Trapping, Roberto Onofrio, Bala Sundaram

The physics of interacting baths is of interest in a variety of contexts, ranging from ultracold atoms to ionized gases. While many features can already be captured in a one-dimensional model, others are speci c to the situation of two or three-dimensional systems. In this paper, we focus on three-dimensional features of a model for thermalization between two baths that we have explored in earlier publications. In contrast to the one-dimensional situation we show that, enroute to thermalization, deviations from the Maxwell-Boltzmann energy distributions more akin to -distributions are observed. In three dimensions, these can be seen in changes at …

Self-Reported Hearing Loss And Health During A Pandemic: Findings From A Cross-Sectional Analysis Using A 2021 Household Survey, Eunice Y. Park, Erin R. Nelson-Bakkum, Amy A. Schultz, Lauren K. Dillard
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic differentially impacted individuals with hearing loss, likely in part due to increased communication difficulties from masking, a commonly implemented protective measure. Objective: This study examines the association between self-reported hearing loss and health during the pandemic. Methods: This study uses data from the COVID-19 Survey collected by the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin from February to March 2021. Hearing loss was defined as self-reported fair or poor hearing. The outcomes were self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression, separately, and self-reported general health. Multivariable models adjusted for age, gender, and race/ethnicity were used to examine the …

Climate change countermeasures require monetary investment for implementation through regulations, often in the form of public taxes. Therefore, public opinion on climate change is an important factor in achieving carbon neutrality (CN). How public perception is formed, leading to motivation to fund measures for CN, needs to be identified. This study aimed to identify the causal structures of attitude change leading to financial investment through two surveys in multiple countries using nudging messages emphasizing familial support (familial nudging), which is effective in promoting pro-environmental attitudes. Study 1 (2023) examined how familial nudging moderates risk-averse attitudes toward climate change. Despite successful …

Background: Many older adults are unable to fully engage in society because of the digital divide, leaving them disconnected from essential services, social networks, and community engagement. This lack of access to technology leads to greater isolation and loneliness, significantly increasing their risk of physical and mental health issues. It also threatens their ability to age in place, as they struggle to navigate everyday tasks like managing healthcare, finances, and communication. Without digital literacy, maintaining independence becomes an increasingly difficult challenge, leaving them vulnerable and reliant on others for support. The purpose of the research completed in manuscript 1 …

In Silico Screening And Identification Of Ctl And Htl Epitopes In The Secreted Virulence Factors Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Edward Kevin B. Bragais, F. M. Heralde Iii, K. C. Fernandez, S. E. Caoili

Background: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) is a highly infectious pathogen and a global health threat due to its resilient cell wall and immune evasion strategies. Despite the availability of the antituberculosis Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, its efficacy varies (0%–80%) and gradually decreases over time. This study aimed to identify cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) and helper T-lymphocyte (HTL) epitopes in MTb secretory proteins using immunoinformatics tools. Material and methods: The Protein Variability Server was used to identify highly conserved sequences, and epitope population coverage was estimated for the Southeast Asian (SEA) region. Selected epitopes were also docked to their major histocompatibility complex alleles. …

Background: Helicobacter pylori infects approximately half of the global population, leading to gastric and duodenal ulcers. Despite the availability of antibiotics, challenges such as patient reluctance, high treatment costs, and antibiotic resistance limit their effectiveness, making vaccination a promising alternative. This study used immunoinformatics to identify candidate epitopes for a multiepitope vaccine construct against H. pylori. Material and methods: The protein variability server was utilized for conservation analysis. The epitopes were screened for antigenicity, allergenicity, toxicity, cross-reactivity, and population coverage. Selected epitopes were docked with their corresponding human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles, and thermodynamic quantities were determined. Five virulence factors …

Leuctrid specimens were examined from a collection expedition conducted over 20 years ago by Dr. Wolfram Mey. Rhopalopsole luzonensis sp. nov., R. absentia sp. nov., and R. rotundus sp. nov. are described based on male specimens. Additionally, a distribution hypothesis, discussion of female specimens, and an updated checklist are briefly provided.
Do Prosecutorial Declination Trends Provide Hope For Reducing Mass Incarceration?, Shima Baradaran Baughman
Do Prosecutorial Declination Trends Provide Hope For Reducing Mass Incarceration?, Shima Baradaran Baughman

This Article examines prosecutorial declination—the decision not to bring charges despite sufficient evidence—and its potential role in addressing mass incarceration. Although prosecutors possess broad discretion and are frequently identified as key actors capable of reducing incarceration rates, little empirical evidence exists regarding how prosecutors actually make charging decisions. Drawing on the largest national field experiment involving prosecutors, this study analyzes how prosecutors respond when given discretion in borderline cases without evidentiary or resource constraints. The findings indicate that prosecutors overwhelmingly choose to charge rather than decline, even when factors suggest restraint may be appropriate. These results challenge claims that prosecutorial …

This study addressed several concepts in the study’s conceptual framework, which were based on profession, professionalization, and professionalism in public procurement. It also discussed the importance of professionalizing public procurement functions and its impact on public procurement performance (Angaw, 2020). The study also aimed to analyze the most prominent global practices in raising the efficiency and capabilities of public procurement workers to reach complete professionalism in public procurement. The paper attempted to investigate the possibility of professionalism in public procurement and its effects on the good governance of state contracts. The paper relied on two basic research approaches, namely the …

For embodied agents, such as robots, tracking objects in their surroundings through visual observation is essential — a task, referred to as Visual Object Tracking (VOT). For instance, during a rearrangement task, a robot may need to track objects, as part of the scene change understanding process, to accurately restore them to their original states. Classic Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) datasets typically focus on tracking moving, single-class object instances in a video from a fixed viewpoint, limiting their applicability to embodied AI tasks. In embodied AI tasks, objects belong to multiple classes, are often static, and are observed from continuously …
