Effects Of Temperature On The Pison Neural Monitor, Andrew C. Engellant, Alejandro H. Rosales, Jessica L. Moler, Alice L. Held, P. James Straw

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

INTRODUCTION: The Pison Neural Monitor is a wrist worn biosensor that detects neuromuscular signals in the forearm. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of temperature on the accuracy and false positive rate (FPR) on the neural monitor. METHODS: Participants (n=6, 28.3±8.9 years, 179.3±9.6 cm, 80.7±15.5 kg, 17.0±2.0 cm wrist circumference) were assigned to either hot (2 males, 1 female) or cold (2 males, 1 female) and completed 6 trials at each temperature in a randomized and counterbalanced repeated measures design. Participants rested in a seated position at three different temperatures in either the heat (35°C, …

Frieda Fligelman: Feminist Academic, Marias Mckenzie Blundell

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

In this sketch, the life and accomplishments of Frieda Fligelman will be explored in depth. Frieda Fligelman was a suffragist based out of Helena, Montana who made great strides for women in higher education and scholarly work. Frieda Fligelman comes from a family of feminist activists with her sister Belle Fligelman Winestine working on Jeanette Rankin’s campaign and working as her secretary. Frieda was the first woman ever admitted to the Ph.D. program of Columbia’s Political Science field. Infection With Bacteriophage Impacts The Evolution Of Antibiotic Resistance In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Jacob E. Cohen Apr 2019

Infection With Bacteriophage Impacts The Evolution Of Antibiotic Resistance In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Jacob E. Cohen

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogenic bacterium commonly found in hospital acquired infections. P. aeruginosa infections often evolve antibiotic resistance. It is known that clinical isolates from P. aeruginosa infections contain high concentrations of filamentous Pf bacteriophage. We hypothesize that P. aeruginosa infections that are infected with Pf phage will have greater resistance to antibiotics. This is because Pf phage are known to be negatively charged, while commonly used aminoglycoside antibiotics such as tobramycin are positively charged. Thus, the negatively charged phage attracts the positively charged antibiotics and draws the antibiotic away from the bacteria, allowing them to survive. To test …

Rocky Mountain High: An Investigation Of Downhill Snowspnorts And Marijuana Use, Silas Phillips Apr 2018

Rocky Mountain High: An Investigation Of Downhill Snowspnorts And Marijuana Use, Silas Phillips

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

What comes to mind when you imagine a ‘stoner?’ Most stereotype the term– some couch-bound, chip-munching slouch with a foggy gaze (and perhaps a goofy grin). Marijuana and its chemical effects hold an increasing presence in American minds. With full legalization of recreational use in 8 states and various degrees of medical legality in 18 others, the substance is caught up in a cultural shift. Our society is tackling the ethicality of marijuana, and the stigmas built around the drug are changing. What was once cited for ‘reefer madness’ is becoming (to some) a medical treatment, or just another way …
