Effects Of Temperature On The Pison Neural Monitor, Andrew C. Engellant, Alejandro H. Rosales, Jessica L. Moler, Alice L. Held, P. James Straw
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
INTRODUCTION: The Pison Neural Monitor is a wrist worn biosensor that detects neuromuscular signals in the forearm. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of temperature on the accuracy and false positive rate (FPR) on the neural monitor. METHODS: Participants (n=6, 28.3±8.9 years, 179.3±9.6 cm, 80.7±15.5 kg, 17.0±2.0 cm wrist circumference) were assigned to either hot (2 males, 1 female) or cold (2 males, 1 female) and completed 6 trials at each temperature in a randomized and counterbalanced repeated measures design. Participants rested in a seated position at three different temperatures in either the heat (35°C, …
Host-Agent-Neighbourhood? How Social And Physical Location Influences Health And Well-Being, Sydney Chapados
Host-Agent-Neighbourhood? How Social And Physical Location Influences Health And Well-Being, Sydney Chapados
UWill Discover Student Research Conference
This theoretically based paper explores how living in a low-income neighborhood influences both individual and population health. While health has been dominated by biological and psychological understandings, one’s interactions with the built and constructed environment have serious implications for one’s health. Using a social determinants of health approach, this paper determines that increased experiences of stigma, poor infrastructure and access to resources, and exposure to negative health behaviours can all be a direct result of the place in which one resides. Ethnographic examples, qualitative data and biological explanations are used to demonstrate these negative effects. However, groups which do live …

Interaction In Games: Digital Board Game Hybrid, Ryan Whisenhunt, Logan Haines
Symposium of Student Scholars
The realm of digital board game hybrids is a relatively new field, and a majority of games currently use computerization for casual board games or accentuating flavor. There is still plenty of room to use these ideas for more complex board games and means. In this study, we explore the avenues in which digital implementation of physical games can provide a streamlined and accessible gameplay experience. Participants in the study will be given a chance to play a short version of the game. A retrospective will be conducted after, where respondents are interviewed on how well the computer supported the …

Prevalence Of High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Types In North-Eastern Mexico And Implications, A. L. Huitrón-Carrizales, Hugo A. Barrera-Saldaña
Research Symposium
Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most frequent sexually transmitted infection (STI) and the causal agent of cervical and penile cancers. Globally, 570,000 cases per year in women and 60,000 cases in men are attributable to HPV. HPV types 16 and 18 are the most prevalent high-risk (HR) viral types in tumors. We have used the database of our HPV diagnostic service to determine the prevalence of HR-HPV types in our population (North-Eastern Mexico) and its implications.
Methods: Samples of 50 men and 50 women that were received in our laboratory from 2017 to 2021 were included. These were collected …

Pharmacoeconomics Of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Treatment With Targeted Therapies Guided By Companion Molecular Diagnostics, Luis E. Fernández-Garza, Hector Sánchez-Ibarra, Daniela Treviño-Sáenz, Hugo A. Barrera-Saldaña
Research Symposium
Background: To guide the treatment with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), the FDA recommends prior companion molecular diagnosis (CMDx). It initially recommended screening for mutations in exon 2 of the KRAS gene, and most recently to extend to screening to exons 2, 3, and 4 of KRAS and 2, 3, and 4 of NRAS genes; furthermore, to evaluate the BRAF exon 15 mutation status (including V600E). To date, no studies have been done to compare the cost-benefit of these different CMDXs.
Methods: We have compared the cost of treatment without …

Diverse Tregs Population And Effects Of Their Inhibition On Growth Of Oral Cancer Cells, Sadhna Aggarwal, Satya N. Das, Suresh C. Sharma
Research Symposium
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the major cancers affecting in Asian countries. The main causative factor has been tobacco habit. It has been reported that immune dysfunction in these patients is one of the major factors for tumor growth and dissemination that affects disease free survival of the patients.
We assessed the phenotypic and functional characteristics of Regulatory T (Treg) CD4+CD25+FoxP3+subsets in patients with OSCC by multicoloured flow cytometry. Subsequently we investigated the effects their inhibition via TDG on growth of OSCC cell lines in vitro.

Increasing Opioid Overdose Among Hispanic Young Population In The Borders Of The Usa And Mexico. Imperative To Work With First Responders And Proper Use Of Narcan, Denis X. Gutierrez, B Oluwakemi, N. Patel, Nevin A. Varghese
Research Symposium
Background: Hypercapnic respiratory failure is a frequently encountered medical emergency. A very common cause among young patients is a side effect of opioids in the setting of an opioid crisis in both sides of the borders. Sometimes a delay in diagnosis associated with increased synthetic opioids use causes a delay in optimal management. We report a case of a patient that was negative for opioids in urine but responded to repeated dose of Narcan, the family later explained that he was obtaining medications across the border and distributing drugs.
Case presentation: 21 y/o Hispanic man who lives at a border …

Toward A Contemporary Theory Of Figurative Realist Painting, Lily Kip
Toward A Contemporary Theory Of Figurative Realist Painting, Lily Kip
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
This research represents findings from an ongoing project analyzing the contemporary value of Figurative Realist Painting, i.e. the artistic depiction of the true-to-life human body. Despite its historical significance, I believe the art world lacks contemporary interest in Figurative Realist Painting due to three major phenomena. 1. The invention of photography in 1840 decreased the value of Realism in painting. 2. Abstract painting thus dominated American Art in the 20th century. 3. Contemporary art philosophies allow such wide definitions of Fine Art that traditional methods garner less critical interest.
On this basis, I suspected the continuing presence of Figurative Realist …

Developing A Web-Based System For Remote Collection And Analysis Of Vehicle Electrical Systems Over Canbus Using Carloop, Joshua N. Valle, Alex Columna-Fuentes
Capstone Showcase
Our program collects vehicle data using an OBD-II device called Carloop that is plugged into the vehicle's diagnostic port. The device executes our code which then communicates with the vehicle's onboard computer to collect data such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, fuel level, and other diagnostic information. This data is then sent over WiFi to Particle’s Cloud, which is a platform for managing IoT devices.
Integrations set up on Particle take care of sending data to our InfluxDB Database, which is hosted on our own cloud-based machine. InfluxDB is a high-performance time-series database that is optimized for storing and querying …

"Mmmuuuchísimos años atrás" (mmmaaany years ago). That is what a Colombian speaker would say when describing an event that occurred a long time ago. In doing so, they simulate throwing an imaginary object (like a paper plane), pushing their hands far away from the body. At the same time, they will extend the duration of the words and rise and drop intonation and speaking rate, simulating the sound of throwing that object. This combination of multiple "modalities" of expression (speech sounds and gestures) that resemble the concepts they are conveying is called Multimodal Iconic Expressions (MMIEs). These MMIEs tend to …
Creando La Confianza: Narratives On Mentorship Of Latina Professors At The University Of New Mexico, Maria Vielma
Creando La Confianza: Narratives On Mentorship Of Latina Professors At The University Of New Mexico, Maria Vielma
Shared Knowledge Conference
Numerous scholars have investigated the significant role that representation and mentorship play in the success of Latinas and women of color during their journey through higher education, from degree completion to faculty hiring and advancement. However, little research exists surrounding the lived experiences that have shaped mentorship carried out by university faculty, specifically, mentorship carried out by bilingual Latina faculty in higher education. Using a Latina Feminist Epistemology and Oral History Methodologies, this thesis aims to understand the cycle of mentorship via the narratives of bilingual Latina professors at the University of New Mexico. This study demonstrates lived experiences of …

Living Roots: Indigenous Agave And Mezcal Cultures, Marsella Macias
Shared Knowledge Conference
"Mezcal is a liquid representation of indigenous culture throughout México." I will never forget my mentor's words when I attended a mezcal tasting he curated in 2015. I had been working with destilados de agave since 2009, before mezcal boomed into the global market, yet I hadn't been able to pin-point what set mezcal uniquely apart from other distillates I worked with throughout my career. It wasn't until I heard his definition that it hit me - mezcal is cultural essence in a bottle. Before journeying profitably across international borders, mezcal traditionally remained in México being sold amongst pueblos and …
Assessing The Effects Of Climate Change On Piñon Pine And Its Associated Fungi, Matthew Taylor
Assessing The Effects Of Climate Change On Piñon Pine And Its Associated Fungi, Matthew Taylor
Shared Knowledge Conference
Precipitation patterns are a well understood driver of biological processes across the globe, with the frequency and amount determining where, when, and how plants and other organisms grow and interact. Weather patterns, however, are becoming unpredictable, as climate change is driving an increase in extreme events, such as drought. The importance of rainfall is no more apparent than in global drylands. One critical and widespread ecosystem type, covering 18 million hectares of land throughout the Southwestern U.S., is piñon-juniper (P-J) woodlands. Pinus edulis (piñon pine) is a dominant tree species in P-J woodlands and is both ecologically and culturally important …

Living a healthy life is a well-desired thing for all human beings. But sometimes our health is affected by the pathogen specially by the bacteria and we get sick. In the event of sickness, we need medicine that can fight against pathogens and make our life back on the track that we always desire. Medicine, to be specific antibiotics has a great role in the treatment of diseases that are caused by bacteria. Right now, antibiotics are getting registrant due to the bacteria's own ability to mutate by itself. The antibiotic that is effective against the specific bacteria may not …
Missing Women Within The National Project: A Transnational View Between Mexico And The United States, Megan Tung-Weston
Missing Women Within The National Project: A Transnational View Between Mexico And The United States, Megan Tung-Weston
Shared Knowledge Conference
This investigation analyzes the ways in which the disappearances of women in Mexico have been used as a political tool of manipulation and oppression of the Mexican people (in particular, women of Indigenous descent). After the Mexican Revolution of the twentieth century, the country entered the modern era with the arrival of global conflicts and technological developments. This transition also brought about various social changes relating to gender, which were both beneficial and harmful for women and Indigenous populations. The construction of feminine identity-what it means to be a woman, in Mexico, in the twentieth century-and the social creation of …
Energy Management In Migrating Hummingbirds, Shayne Halter
Energy Management In Migrating Hummingbirds, Shayne Halter
Shared Knowledge Conference
Hummingbirds are the smallest of migratory birds. Their use of hovering flight to feed on nectar results in prodigious rates of energy consumption. At night, when birds are unable to feed, body fat must be used to stay warm. These characteristics make migratory flights to and from northern breeding areas very expensive. To offset these costs, hummingbirds alternate long flights with stopover periods of refueling along the way. Body fat stores, which may account for as much as 40% of a bird's body weight, also provide a buffer if birds find themselves in a nectar "desert" when the need to …

Aging And Learning: Community Engagement And Self-Efficacy In L2 Teaching To Elderly Students, Leticia Rinaldi
Shared Knowledge Conference
The elderly population (60 years or older) has been increasing in numbers during the past decades around the world and is expected to reach the number of two billion by 2050 (Scult, Haime, et al 2015; Santos, 2019). In Brazil, the aging population numbers are rising more rapidly compared to the global tendency (Alves, 2020). However, the misconception that elderly people are uncapable or incompetent is still part of the imaginary constructed around the aging population (Minichiello and Coulson, 2005). These perceptions shape the access of older population to resources that are accessible to younger sections of society, causing a …

Uncanny Is The City: Michael Haneke's Trilogy Of Emotional Glaciation As Anti-Heimat Discourse, Amber Lane
Shared Knowledge Conference
The Heimatfilm enjoyed great popularity, and was at its peak, in the German-speaking world during the 1950s. The complexity of the concept of Heimat is well-known, evoking feelings of belonging, simplicity, and engagement with non-urban life. My thesis examines Austrian director Michael Haneke's trilogy of emotional glaciation, i.e., the films The Seventh Continent (1989), Benny's Video (1992), and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance. These three films embody the Heimat concept insofar as uncanny parallels to traditional Heimat films can be identified, but they also contradict it insofar as the films turn tropes of the Heimat film genre on …
