Within our campus, there is an evident problem relating to drug use and to underlying mental health issues among students. It is known that the students at IMSA use drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism for their mental health issues; however, this issue is not discussed on our campus. Prospective students across Illinois work excessively towards the achievement of getting accepted to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Though the selection process of applicants is meant to be fair and only admit the most qualified students, it has been found that this process has its flaws. While GPA and SAT scores are factored into these decisions, additional factors such as geographic, gender, and ethnic criteria are involved. THRIVE (Taking Health Right into Varied Education) is a weekly program designed to help teenagers with autism improve their social skills by working with other kids in their situation. We aim to give kids with autism an opportunity to improve their social skills through a program that runs on every Saturday of the month. We wanted to do this program because we feel that there is not enough action in our communities and there is a negative stigma about people with Autism, therefore they do not get the help that they need.
