Vex Robotics, Geoffrey M. Winship, Soe Abitia, Magnus Bergman, Aaron Butler, Kellie Wallace, Stephen Anderson, Kristin Sandager, Bryan Rhodes, Josh Warren

Discovery Day - Prescott

The Vex Robotics Team is an E-Prize competition team. The team is comprised of students of all class standings and from all the colleges on campus. They competes in the VexU competition circuit in the state of Arizona and the competition this year is called Toss Up and is played on a 12 ft by 12 ft field. The game involves the moving or tossing of game elements, which for this year are large 16' diameter beach balls and 5' diameter bucky balls, into several different goal zones on the field. The game is played between two teams, each with …

Systems Fundamentals As Facilitating Cubesat Development, Marcus Bever Apr 2014

Systems Fundamentals As Facilitating Cubesat Development, Marcus Bever

Discovery Day - Prescott

As an investment of resources, systems engineering ultimately aids in developing coherent, optimized, and traceable design. Developing a satellite requires complex organization and coordination. The successful program involves active communication between subsystems, something to which the system modeling language is well tailored. Managing these complexities and collaborative aspects effectively on a systems level was a goal, thereby maximizing the support provided to engineering teams. Developing a contextual understanding of subsystems to facilitate healthy communication likewise permitted the use of CORE to decompose requirements, functions, and hardware. The production of subsystem-tailored documentation, including website accessibility of modeling charts and design budgets, …

Designing A Circularly Polarized Antenna For An Eaglesat Satellite, Dadija L. Bliudzius Apr 2014

Designing A Circularly Polarized Antenna For An Eaglesat Satellite, Dadija L. Bliudzius

Discovery Day - Prescott

This project focused on researching and developing a circularly polarized antenna for use on a CubeSat. The current satellite design requires the antenna to transmit and receive at 436MHz and the body area is to be less than 10 square centimeters. The design process began by improving basic understanding of antennas, electrical engineering terminology, and technology. To build experience in antenna design, a basic dipole was built for communication on a payload flown on a high-altitude balloon. The current task is to create a circularly polarized antenna on a PCB that phase-shifts using precise microstrip lengths and power splitters. Each …

Measuring Mechanical Properties Of Thin Optical Coatings, Elaine Rhoades Apr 2014

Measuring Mechanical Properties Of Thin Optical Coatings, Elaine Rhoades

Discovery Day - Prescott

The mechanical properties of thin films are often different from the bulk properties of the same material. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory is very sensitive to coherent mechanical vibrations of the surface of the coatings on its cavity mirrors, which are directly related to the mechanical properties of the thin films. The amplitude of vibration in turn depends on two properties, the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of the coatings. These properties can be measured using a number of different techniques. Over the course of the project, two methods were used: ultrasonic and nanoindentation. The goal of this talk …

Staged Data Warehousing With Gigabytes Of Longitudinal Data, Tyson Spoelma Apr 2014

Staged Data Warehousing With Gigabytes Of Longitudinal Data, Tyson Spoelma

2014 Conference Presentations

The GVSU Offshore Wind Assessment Project buoy generates approximately 20 gigabytes of raw, longitudinal data each year. It has been running from the end of 2011 to early 2014 with potentially continuing operation for several years. Our data warehousing measures receives the data as unindexed files with loosely defined variable sets to an organized database with standardized message types and date span folders. In order to utilize and share our large data most efficiently, we created a streamlined database file structure for internal analytical use and a web based data retrieval system for portable external environment use.

A Qualitative Life Course Study: Significant Life Events In The Lives Of Appalachian First-Generation College Graduates, Peggy Henderson Murphy Mar 2014

A Qualitative Life Course Study: Significant Life Events In The Lives Of Appalachian First-Generation College Graduates, Peggy Henderson Murphy

ASA Annual Conference

Traditionally, the Appalachian region has struggled with poverty and isolation. Although in recent decades many of the outer Appalachian counties have stabilized economically the central region of Appalachia that includes West Virginia, southeastern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky continues to have the highest concentration of distressed and at-risk counties in the country. One of the most effective ways of combating poverty and isolation is through education, yet, educational opportunities for Appalachian youth have been limited. This study used a qualitative approach; six Appalachian youths who had either recently graduated from university or who were in their junior or senior year of …
