Conservation Genetics Of Crawfish Frogs At Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, Dana B. Leigh Apr 2014

Conservation Genetics Of Crawfish Frogs At Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, Dana B. Leigh

University Presentation Showcase Event

Crawfish frogs (Lithobates areolatus) have been experiencing significant population declines across their range over the last several decades due to widespread habitat loss and fragmentation. The Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (BONWR) in southeastern Indiana, the easternmost locality of crawfish frog populations, houses recently discovered populations of crawfish frogs. We studied these populations to (1) determine the diversity and distribution of genetic variability among populations at BONWR and compare this to other genetic studies of crawfish frogs and (2) examine how landscape features and distance affect the distribution of genetic variability. We used 7 microsatellite loci to genotype frogs collected …

Effects Of Dissolution Of Biomass In Ionic Liquids Using Direct Analysis In Real Time (Dart) Mass Spectrometry, Casey J. Howdieshell Apr 2014

Effects Of Dissolution Of Biomass In Ionic Liquids Using Direct Analysis In Real Time (Dart) Mass Spectrometry, Casey J. Howdieshell

University Presentation Showcase Event

Biomass has become increasing important in recent years. Through pretreatment and saccharification processes sugars produced by algae result in biofuel production. For these processes to occur, cellulose must be separated from hemicellulose and lignin components. Major obstacles in development of these processes is lignin, an organic polymer that contributes to plant cell wall stability. Ionic liquids are low-temperature molten salts that possess chemical and physical properties which aide in dissolution of whole biomass. This study focuses on the interactions of quiescent switchgrass (Panicum vigatum) with nine different ionic liquids. These interactions were tested using microscopic techniques as well …

The same skills will be reinforced and enhanced in their Rhetorical Arts course the following semester. This will provide the foundation for students to later develop more advanced information literacy skills during a required course that has been “flagged” for information literacy at the upper level. This tiered and systematic approach will allow for a more consistent …

Microwave Properties Of Magnetic Nanowires Arrays, Daniel Adams Apr 2014

Microwave Properties Of Magnetic Nanowires Arrays, Daniel Adams

Innovate UNO

This study focused on examining high-frequency properties of magnetic nanowire arrays. The microwave was produced by a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) and transmitted through coplanar waveguides (CPW). The CPWs are 300 µm long with signal line width of 20 µm, ensuring minimum losses due to radiation. CPWs were fabricated through the photolithography process. The magnetic nanowires were fabricated through e-beam lithography on top of the CPW. The VNA was used to feed the CPW and measurements of the FMR absorption allowed us to understand the effect of interaction between nanowires on their dynamic properties.

The Effect Of Scarcity On Consumer Purchase Intentions, Jeremy Sanders, Stephanie Morgan Apr 2014

The Effect Of Scarcity On Consumer Purchase Intentions, Jeremy Sanders, Stephanie Morgan

Innovate UNO

Can placing time constraints on promotions result in increased consumer response? According to Brannon and Brock (2001), when consumers are aware of product scarcity, they are more likely to exhibit greater purchase intentions. Our goal is to test if scarcity positively influences consumer preference when consumers are informed that the product is available for a limited time only. We ran an experiment that involved 100 actual Starbucks consumers. We handed out two different sets of questionnaires at five different Starbucks stores in St. Tammany Parish and Orleans Parish. In the experimental condition, consumers learned that Pumpkin Spice Latte would be …

The Impact Of Victim Alcohol Consumption And Perpetrator Use Of Force On Perceptions Of An Acquaintance Rape Vignette, Jada Horton, Ariel Guillory, Tracy Protti, Lauren Held

Academic Summit

Sexual violence is unfortunately a major issue in our society. In addition, it is not always reported, and justice is rarely served. In the recent Stubenville rape case, two teenage males raped a sixteen-year old female who was incapacitated due to intoxication. Though the Stubenville case was highly publicized and resulted in a conviction, the victim was still blamed. Society often places blame on the victim. Alcohol consumption has been shown to be a factor that can increase victim blame. It is unclear whether victim blame in cases of incapacitated rape stems from the victim’s voluntary consumption of alcohol or …

Social Media And Racism: A State-By-State Analysis Of Post 2012 Presidential Election Tweets, Cory Williams Apr 2014

Social Media And Racism: A State-By-State Analysis Of Post 2012 Presidential Election Tweets, Cory Williams

Academic Summit

In this study we examined state-by-state demographic differences in belief in God, political orientation, and IQ as predictors of racist tone in twitter messages right after Barack Obama was reelected president in November of 2012. While all measures were strongly correlated with racist tone, a multiple regression analysis found that only self-described higher belief in God explained the variance. While this finding might seem counterintuitive, we interpreted the findings as an indication of ingroup/outgroup orientation rather than a reflection of any specific religious doctrine.

Altering The Course: Mental Illness And First Responders, Amy Douthwaite Apr 2014

Altering The Course: Mental Illness And First Responders, Amy Douthwaite

Academic Summit

Mental illness is a complex and devastating diagnosis, which requires a fundamental understanding of how people afflicted with a diagnosis respond to the world around them. For those who are tasked with protecting the community, this understanding has a far-reaching effect, beyond the immediate contact. Forming relationships with community partners, such as DCFS and/or behavioral health experts to lay a foundation for dispatchers, law enforcement, and firefighters to learn the basic signs and symptoms of the more common types of mental illness, Alzheimer’s, and Autism will allow first responders to intervene in ways that limit negative outcomes. Dispatchers and first …

No Glove, No Love: Predicting Condom Use Behaviors From Implicit And Explicit Attitudes And Psychological Flexibility, Jessica Auzenne Apr 2014

No Glove, No Love: Predicting Condom Use Behaviors From Implicit And Explicit Attitudes And Psychological Flexibility, Jessica Auzenne

Academic Summit

College students engage in a variety of sexual behaviors with more partners than in the past, often without protection. Condoms are an easily accessible means of sexual protection, but they are often used inconsistently by college students (Murray & Miller, 2000). Although students are generally aware of the consequences of unprotected sex, this awareness does not strongly influence condom use (Prince & Bernard, 1998). Research has shown that attitudes about sex may be more influential on sexual behavior than knowledge about high-risk behavior. Negative attitudes about condoms have been linked to the avoidance of condom use, but there have been …

Not all people respond the same way to following directions, remaining calm in stressful situations, being in a hospital or clinic or interacting with new people. This is common in people with …

Estimating The Effect Of Home Court Advantage On Wins In The Nba, Jason Kotecki, Robert Leekley, Faculty Advisor Apr 2014

Estimating The Effect Of Home Court Advantage On Wins In The Nba, Jason Kotecki, Robert Leekley, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

What is the effect of home court advantage in the National Basketball Association (NBA)? Based on the Economic Theory of Professional Sports and the concept of shirking, teams should perform better at home than they do on the road. Descriptive statistics support this expectation. Therefore it is hypothesized that a home court advantage exists through the selected variables of attendance, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, fouls called by the referee, and days of rest. Following every NBA team and every game played over a three year span (2008-2011), this paper examines the probability of producing a win at home …
