Exploring Computer Graphics: Photorealistic And Non-Photorealistic Rendering, Brittany Chin Apr 2015

Exploring Computer Graphics: Photorealistic And Non-Photorealistic Rendering, Brittany Chin

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Over the course of the year, the Advanced Computer Graphics course has explored a variety of image rendering techniques starting with the basic filling of polygons, and working all the way up to non-photorealistic rendering techniques. I have implemented a variety of these techniques in projects which demonstrate the growth and advancements of graphics over time. The implementations that are featured are an interactive tile game, a curve editor, a ray-tracer, and a non-photorealistic project. The capabilities of computer graphics are seemingly endless, and it is getting easier and easier to model the real world in synthetic systems. Where will …

A Look Into Graphics Engines And Non-Photorealistic Rendering, Margaux Leblanc Apr 2015

A Look Into Graphics Engines And Non-Photorealistic Rendering, Margaux Leblanc

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Throughout the year I have created a graphics pipeline that can render both photorealistic and non-photorealistic images. It all starts with defining what a pixel is and building from there. For instance, an image is a collection of pixels, a color is just three numbers (red, green, and blue values), a line is coloring certain pixels with such a color based on Bresenham's line algorithm and so on. My graphics engine can draw and shade points, lines, polylines, and polygons according to different algorithms. Using these basic shapes I can create photorealistic images of L-systems and non-photorealistic images of paintbrush …

Efficient Market Hypothesis And Environmental Stocks: Market Reactions To Capital Investment In Renewable Energy Projects And The Pricing Of Environmental Securities, John Crampton Apr 2015

Efficient Market Hypothesis And Environmental Stocks: Market Reactions To Capital Investment In Renewable Energy Projects And The Pricing Of Environmental Securities, John Crampton

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

The focus of this paper is on the efficient market hypothesis which states that securities are all efficiently priced based on all available information. Furthermore, once an announcement is made or there is new information available, the market reacts and adjusts prices. I hope to analyze this theory and test it against environmental stocks focused on renewable energy generation (solar fields, wind turbine fields, etc.). Then, the analysis of what characteristics of a security make up the pricing of that stock, such as the price of oil, dividend yield, time of the year (cyclical factors), types of capital investments (solar …

Rethinking How To Efficiently Fund Public Goods: An Agent-Based Modelling Of A Group Funding System Accommodating Different Human Behaviors And Influences Affecting Decision-Making, Shama Ramos Apr 2015

Rethinking How To Efficiently Fund Public Goods: An Agent-Based Modelling Of A Group Funding System Accommodating Different Human Behaviors And Influences Affecting Decision-Making, Shama Ramos

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

In neoclassical economics, we assume individuals generally based their decisions on their own welfare maximizing their utility. Due to this assumption, we created a tax system in order to provide public goods so that no one will act as a free-rider. Nonetheless, this system only provides general optimal utility instead of optimal utility for each individual. Because of the set assumption that humans only seek self-interest, economists overlooked other significant factors affecting peoples decision-making processes. In this research, I applied an agent-based model in order to take in consideration other factors affecting human decision-making and propose a new system in …

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Through Grassland Restoration In The Upper Midwest, United States: A Spatially-Controlled Cost-Benefit Analysis, Paco Defrancis Apr 2015

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Through Grassland Restoration In The Upper Midwest, United States: A Spatially-Controlled Cost-Benefit Analysis, Paco Defrancis

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

The global agriculture sector is responsible for close 20% of gross anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions emitted since the start of the industrial age. Much of these emissions are attributed to the degradation of soils due to land use change when native ecosystems were converted to agricultural fields. Soil organic carbon (SOC) has been found to decrease in temperate soils when the native (such as a forest or grassland) ecosystem is replace by croplands. The aggregate amount of organic carbon stored in soils globally is estimated be 3.3x the size of the atmospheric carbon pool. Further soil degradation and reduction …

Outside Spending In The 2014 Midterm Elections: The Lasting Effects Of Citizens United, Lucas Fortier Apr 2015

Outside Spending In The 2014 Midterm Elections: The Lasting Effects Of Citizens United, Lucas Fortier

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

The purpose of this study was to shed light on the controversial area of independent expenditures in the post-Citizens United world of campaign finance. The study focuses on three questions: who are the main players participating in this area of campaign finance, how are these outside groups being funded, and how do these groups spend their money to influence elections? Some findings of the study were that, while there was a large number of registered SuperPACs and political nonprofits in the 2014 midterm elections, only a relatively small group of 70 major organizations accounted for over 90 percent of total …

Land Reform And The Use Of Violence: Creating A Set Of Conditions Using The Case Of Zimbabwe, Dylan Ciccarelli Apr 2015

Land Reform And The Use Of Violence: Creating A Set Of Conditions Using The Case Of Zimbabwe, Dylan Ciccarelli

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

The purpose of this paper is to develop a set of conditions under which land reform becomes violent, looking specifically at the fast-track land reform policy implemented in Zimbabwe from 1998-2003. The roots and use of violence in the context of land reform is a topic that has not been widely researched in previous land reform literature, however it is important as the issue of land inequality has been, and is, an ongoing issue in many sub-Saharan African countries, including Zimbabwe. This paper will argue that land reform will become violent when certain economic, political, and social conditions are present. …

South African Survivor: The National Party’S Survival In The Context Of The Cold War, John Hartigan Apr 2015

South African Survivor: The National Party’S Survival In The Context Of The Cold War, John Hartigan

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Apartheid continued in the Republic of South Africa until 1993, far longer than any other minority dominated government on the continent of Africa. In this paper, I analyze the reasons why Afrikaners were able to perpetuate their grip on political power far longer than any of their white colleagues around the continent. This paper is comparative; I place the South African experience in context with other minority ruled statesKenya and Mozambiquethat experienced the break down of minority rule far sooner than the South Africans. I argue that there are three main factors that ensured the that the National PartySouth Africas …

Demonstration Of Adaptive Optics In A Laboratory Setting, Jianing Yang Apr 2015

Demonstration Of Adaptive Optics In A Laboratory Setting, Jianing Yang

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

We constructed a simple adaptive optics system to demonstrate how a laser guide star coupled with a deformable mirror and wavefront sensor can be used to correct for distortions caused by turbulence in the Earths atmosphere. Adaptive optics (AO) systems are currently implemented at a number of national astronomical observatories, including the W. M. Keck Observatory, Gemini, and Subaru, and is a key design component for the next generation of very large (30-meter-class) ground-based telescopes. Adaptive optics is crucial for improving spatial resolution of ground-based imaging in astronomy. Using AO, we are able to achieve better image quality with the …

African American Women In Greek Life, Jacqueline Tavella Apr 2015

African American Women In Greek Life, Jacqueline Tavella

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

For my research paper I would like to write about how African American Sororities originated. In looking at these sororities I would like to report on some of the women who founded these organizations, such as Ethel Hedgeman Lyke, who founded the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Howard University in 1908. I would also like to do research on Charles Robert Samuel Taylor, Pearl Neal, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, and Fannie Pettie who all played a role in founding Zeta Phi Beta at Howard University in 1920. This particular story is very interesting because it was initially a man who …

Let There Be Light! Photochemical Generation Of Dimethylvinylidene, Tarini S. Hardikar Apr 2015

Let There Be Light! Photochemical Generation Of Dimethylvinylidene, Tarini S. Hardikar

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

A new photochemical route to dimethylvinylidene, a highly reactive, short-lived carbene intermediate featuring a neutral divalent carbon, has been synthesized. Upon photolysis with UV light (~315 to 400 nm), the precursor releases the carbene that can be then trapped by an alkene. Efforts to determine the lifetime of this carbene and the rate at which reacts with alkenes, using time resolved laser flash photolysis techniques, are currently underway. This method of generating vinylidenes opens up a novel, safe and viable avenue to analogous intermediates which are considerably difficult to generate by other means.

The Effects Of Flooding On Photosynthesis, Transpiration, And Stomatal Conductance Of Three Bottomland Hardwood Species, Angela Sutherland, Hans Williams Apr 2015

The Effects Of Flooding On Photosynthesis, Transpiration, And Stomatal Conductance Of Three Bottomland Hardwood Species, Angela Sutherland, Hans Williams

Bright Ideas Conference

Many tree species are able to adapt to harsh environmental conditions in order to survive. The degree of adaptability can determine how long a species can survive during prolonged environmental stress. This experiment monitored the effects of flooding on the photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance of three bottomland hardwood tree species: water oak (Quercus nigra), willow oak (Quercus phellos), and bald cypress (Taxodium distichum).
