Curriculum To Commons: Student Scholarship And Institutional Repositories, Elizabeth Skene, J. D. Rimann
Institutional Repository Day
While the primary goals of institutional repositories are often seen as preserving and promoting faculty scholarship, many institutions are using their IRs to encourage student success. At Western Carolina University, librarians are using their IR to highlight graduate student capstone projects and to support undergraduate research. This session will encourage attendees to think outside the box and to find uses for their IRs that are unique to their organizations. The session will also highlight the benefits of supporting student scholarship through IR initiatives from the perspective of a student editor of an undergraduate journal that is published through an IR.

Sleep Quality, But Not Quantity, Is Associated With Reduced Abdominal Fat Accumulation During Pregnancy, Hannah G. Delia, Jabreia James
Symposium of Student Scholars
During pregnancy, women typically see a disruption in sleep and an abnormal amount of abdominal fat accumulation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between sleep disturbance, quality or quantity and the accumulation of abdominal fat during pregnancy. METHODS: First-time pregnant women (N=25) were recruited from a local OB/GYN office. Participants (aged 27.2±4.5 years) visited the exercise physiology laboratory at KSU to obtain body composition measurements and sleep data between 17 and 21 weeks gestation. Overall sleep disturbance, quality, and quantity were assessed through a sleep disturbance survey. Six subjects failed the validity …
The Motivational Effects Of Goal Orientation, Self-Efficacy, And Perceived Choice, Charles N. Elliott
The Motivational Effects Of Goal Orientation, Self-Efficacy, And Perceived Choice, Charles N. Elliott
Symposium of Student Scholars
The present research explores relationships between intrinsic motivation, choice, autonomy, and self-efficacy. Intrinsically motivated individuals have increases in perceived choice, as well as self-efficacy while completing tasks autonomously. New research suggests the type of goal an individual sets effects their motivation for completing a task and their self-efficacious behavior while performing it. The present research manipulates goal orientation with either an approach-mastery goal or with an approach-performance goal manipulation. We predicted that mastery goals would lead to increases in achievement motivation and perceived choice, because of self-efficacy. Feedback was manipulated using informative slightly positive versus very positive conditions (Ryan, 1982). …
Thermal Analysis Of Borosilicate Glass For Its Biological Applications, Gregory Humble
Thermal Analysis Of Borosilicate Glass For Its Biological Applications, Gregory Humble
Symposium of Student Scholars
Borosilicate glass doped with varying wt% of cerium oxide is investigated for biological applications. Thermal studies of each formulation were conducted using an SDT Q600 differential scanning calorimeter. 30mg samples of 350 - 425 μm particle size of each type of glass were heated to 1200°C in order to obtain the glass transition, crystallization, and melting temperatures. Samples were then heated to 900°C at several heating rates, ranging from 2°C/min to 100°C/min, then compared against each other as well as against an undoped borosilicate glass.
Relational Maximization And Commitment In Romantic Relationships, Madison Garner
Relational Maximization And Commitment In Romantic Relationships, Madison Garner
Spokane Intercollegiate Research Conference
Commitment in romantic relationships tends to increase as satisfaction increases, but can a personality trait affect commitment levels of individuals in satisfying relationships? This study examines whether the trait of relational maximization impacts commitment. Relational maximization is the desire to make the best choice in romantic relationships and is comprised of three components: alternative search, high standards, and decision difficulty. This study explores how relational maximization and its components relate to commitment, and potentially moderate the relationship between satisfaction and commitment. Results from 343 participants revealed alternative search and decision difficulty were negatively related to commitment, while holding high standards …

A Climatology Of The Interaction Between Short-Wave Troughs And Shore-Parallel Lake-Effect Snowstorms Off Of Lake Ontario, Zachary S. Bruick, Emily W. Ott, Nicholas D. Metz
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Lake-effect snowstorms can produce prolific snowfall amounts near the shores of Lake Ontario while presenting a severe hazard to public safety. Shore-parallel lake-effect snow bands are 20–50 kilometers wide and can extend inland for over 200 kilometers. While lake-effect snow is primarily a lower tropospheric event, middle and upper tropospheric features can have an impact on the evolution of lake-effect snow. In order to understand the influence of the upper troposphere on lake-effect snow, an eight-year (2007–2015) climatology of the interactions between 500-hPa short-wave troughs and Lake Ontario shore-parallel lake-effect snowstorms was developed. A short-wave trough database and single site …
First Principle Study Of Photocatalytic Activity Of Graphene-Semiconductor Nanocomposites, Stephen P. Sekoulopoulos
First Principle Study Of Photocatalytic Activity Of Graphene-Semiconductor Nanocomposites, Stephen P. Sekoulopoulos
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
The photocatalytic activity of graphene-semiconductor nanocomposites and their ability to effectively activate and reduce CO2 has attracted significant attention in the field of computational physics. In this work, the density functional theory has been employed to investigate the adsorption and initial activation of CO2 on ZnO nanoclusters, and subsequently on graphene-ZnO nanocomposite. Two stoichiometric clusters (ZnO)6 and (ZnO)12 were considered, and it has been found that the adsorption of the larger cluster on the graphene sheet is stronger and more favorable. In addition, (ZnO)12 exhibited one electron activation of CO2 while (ZnO)6 failed …

Rebellion Fueled By Beethoven, Emily Robinson
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
The fact that Beethoven’s Ninth was performed at Tiananmen Square, China and Berlin, Germany in 1989 demonstrates the symphony’s potential for communicating across differences of time and culture. By closely examining the first seventeen measures of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, first movement “Allegro ma non troppo un poco maestoso” as well as the student protests in Tiananmen Square, China and the Christmas Day celebration concert led by Leonard Bernstein in Berlin, Germany in 1989, this paper argues that the enduring significance of the Ninth Symphony is possible because of the penetrating themes of …

Reparations For Slavery In The United States, Alicia G. Kinsellagh
Reparations For Slavery In The United States, Alicia G. Kinsellagh
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
After the Civil War, freed slaves were promised “40 acres and a mule” to start new lives. This plan was opposed and following proposals for reparations have been opposed since. The majority of U.S. citizens believe that reparations are unnecessary because no living person is responsible for slavery, arguing that there is no “legacy of slavery.” However, others believe that African Americans today are still impacted by the vestiges of slavery. Thus, all U.S. citizens share responsibility for slavery’s legacy. This project explores the arguments for and against giving reparations to African Americans.
Keywords: reparations, “legacy of slavery,” collective responsibility
Modulated Hydrothermal Synthesis And Optimization Of Hf/Zr-Fumarate Metal-Organic Frameworks, Ioannina Castano
Modulated Hydrothermal Synthesis And Optimization Of Hf/Zr-Fumarate Metal-Organic Frameworks, Ioannina Castano
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
Water-stable Hf/Zr-Fumarate (FMA) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly promising for gas separation because of their postulated small pore size compared to other UiO-66-type MOFs and the low cost of fumaric acid. However, the efficient synthesis of these MOFs remains a big challenge. A mild, green, scalable modulated hydrothermal (MHT) method was applied for the synthesis of these MOFs. Specifically, acetic acid (AA), formic acid (FA), and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) were used as the modulators. Various water to modulator solvent ratios were studied to investigate the effects of modulators on surface area and gas uptake properties. The MHT synthesized Hf/Zr-FMA MOFs …

Throughout its Final Report, the Presidential Task Force on 21st Century Policing repeatedly called for a new form of civilian oversight: for police departments to involve community members in the process of developing and reviewing department policies on a variety of topics from use of new technologies to police training. The Task Force stressed that this sort of engagement is essential to promoting external legitimacy and building trust between policing agencies and the communities they serve. Yet as a number of police officials have acknowledged, community engagement around matters of policy raises a number of difficult questions—and there are few …
Quick And Satisfied? The Effects Of Positive Feedback On Task Completion, Rain M. Carroll
Quick And Satisfied? The Effects Of Positive Feedback On Task Completion, Rain M. Carroll
Scholars Week
Previous researchers have focused on the availability and quality of feedback as a mediating factor for work performance (Kluger & DiNisi, 1996). Quality feedback is that which is consistent and provides direction towards specific goals and is a major directive factor of work performance (London, 1995). As individuals that receive quality feedback during the work process tend of show better work performance, the question remains regarding regular tasks and non-work related performance. It was hypothesized that participants that receive positive feedback will complete a personally irrelevant task (i.e., a Sudoku puzzle) more efficiently than those that do not receive feedback. …
Influence Of Authority On Attitude Change Due To Vicarious Dissonance, Kendrick Settler Jr.
Influence Of Authority On Attitude Change Due To Vicarious Dissonance, Kendrick Settler Jr.
Scholars Week
Recent research has suggested that watching others behave in an inconsistent or inappropriate manner can cause dissonance, particularly when one identified with the person behaving inappropriately (Norton, Cooper, Monin, & Hogg, 2003). To examine the differences is vicarious dissonance on attitude change, undergraduate students (N = 123) participated in an experiment, which consisted of a pre and post 24-item dissonance-relevant test (Elliot & Devine, 1988), to measure affect change, the participate was asked to write about either a friend or teacher they respected most, a pre and post Inclusion of Other in the Self Scale (Aron, Aron, & Smollan, 1992) …
The Evil That Men Do: Genocide In The Twentieth Century, Tracey Newport
The Evil That Men Do: Genocide In The Twentieth Century, Tracey Newport
Scholars Week
In the past one hundred years, there has been an ongoing mission of the civilized world to prevent the atrocities of genocide from happening. While admirable in thought, the policies taken to prevent them have failed. With early warning signs in situations of genocide being different in each case it is hard to determine when genocide is imminent. The lack of knowledge about the situation proves to be a serious problem to global actors that are required to work within the information available to them. By using three different case studies of genocide with each occurring within different contexts; the …
Finding The Truth: An Examination Into The Use Of Rhetoric In Thucydides, Eryn Pritchett
Finding The Truth: An Examination Into The Use Of Rhetoric In Thucydides, Eryn Pritchett
Scholars Week
For centuries, scholars have looked to Thucydides as truth--a factual and accurate account of the Peloponnesian War--due to his thorough use of critical analysis and logical deduction. Unlike his predecessor, Herodotus, Thucydides dodged the critical and literary analysis that has plagued Herodotus for years. However, in the past few decades historians have began to realize that Thucydides is far more than facts on paper. This research project will show that Thucydides use of Athenian rhetoric transforms his work from that of historical accuracy into a "possession for all time," redefining the way other historians would construct their own narrative. (Thucydides, …

Kentucky Lake: An Opportunity For Long Term Monitoring Of Fish Communities, Bradley Hartman
Kentucky Lake: An Opportunity For Long Term Monitoring Of Fish Communities, Bradley Hartman
Scholars Week
Global aquatic ecosystems are impacted by a variety of mechanisms including habitat destruction, fish overharvest, and the introduction of invasive species. Long term monitoring of an ecosystem’s fish community, along with abiotic and biotic factors that influence the fish community, is crucial in establishing effective management strategies. Currently, numerous monitoring programs exist across the United States. However, a long term monitoring program of non-game and non-commercial fish community dynamics has not been established within Kentucky Lake in Western Kentucky. Preliminary sampling of the Kentucky Lake fish community was performed using boat electroshocking and surface trawling. Four embayments within Kentucky Lake …

"Woman on Woman Aggression": Predictors of Beliefs in Double Sex Standards
The presence of double standards is a topic that has been widely researched for the past several decades. Sexual double standards are based on the belief that sexual behaviors by women are viewed differently than when similar behaviors are exhibited by men. Early research stated that double standards were no longer much of an issue as seen in archival research by Crawford and Popp (2003). As they pulled research from previous decades, they concluded that double standards were not much of an issue in the 1970’s but resurfaced a …
