Low-Cost Hab Platform To Measure Particulate Matter In The Troposphere, Mark J. Potosnak, Bernhard Beck-Winchatz, Paul Ritter

2017 Academic High Altitude Conference

High-altitude balloons (HABs) are an engaging platform for formal and informal STEM education. However, the logistics of launching, chasing and recovering a payload on a 1200 g or 1500 g balloon can be daunting for many novice school groups and citizen scientists, and the cost can be prohibitive. In addition, there are many interesting scientific applications that do not require reaching the stratosphere. In this poster presentation we discuss a novel approach based on small (30 g) balloons that are cheap and easy to handle, and low-cost tracking devices (SPOT and 900 MHz spread spectrum) that do not require a …

Iron Enhanced Rain Garden, Rebecca F. Valliere Jul 2016

Iron Enhanced Rain Garden, Rebecca F. Valliere

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The purpose of this research is to modify current rain garden designs to better reduce phosphorus levels in stormwater. The problem with current implemented rain gardens is the high levels of phosphorus in the effluent (outflow water). High phosphorus leads to a rise in algae blooms in nearby water bodies that lead to unhealthy ecosystems. The proposed solution is to use iron shavings to absorb excess phosphorus. The design is being adapted from previous research involving iron. The iron is dispersed in a layer of sand and is implemented as a layer in the rain garden. The effluent of the …

Fundamental Study And Applications To Biomass Pyrolysis Of The Mechanically Fluidized Reactor, Valentina Lago, Franco Berruti, Cedric Briens

5th International Congress on Green Process Engineering (GPE 2016)

Lignin has great potential for the production of aromatics currently derived from petroleum, since it is the most abundant source of aromatics in nature. At present, Kraft lignin is used as fuel within the pulping process but, alternatively, it could be converted to high-value chemicals using thermochemical processes such as pyrolysis. Kraft lignin, however, is a very cohesive and thermally sensitive powder with foaming and agglomerating tendency under reaction conditions. Consequently, a novel reactor design, designated as Mechanically Fluidized Reactor (MFR) has been developed to successfully process Kraft lignin.

Teaching Or Tyranny: Class And Course Guides, Nancy W. Noe Jun 2016

Teaching Or Tyranny: Class And Course Guides, Nancy W. Noe

Library Instruction West 2016

The adoption of LibGuides by numerous Libraries has given rise to the creation of a multitude of class or course guides within the system. Librarians have become enamored of such pages and spend hours developing pages for a number of classes. Many of these guides are then used in actual library instruction, or embedded into learning and course management systems as substitutes for face-to-face sessions. Upon examination, however, the vast majority of these class and course guides simply replicate a version of subject guides. Do these pre-determined lists of databases and ready-made widgets really offer students the opportunity to develop …
