Folksonomies & Folklore: Connecting The Communities Of The Past With The Present In The James Callow Archive At Udm (Panel C), Tanya Davidson
Network Detroit: Digital Humanities Theory and Practice
My topic focuses on the James Callow Folklore Collection that is housed at the University of Detroit Mercy. I have written a case study on the current archival practices for the collection, and I explore the possibility of including community based tagging and open contributions to the database as a way to connect the collection from the past communities to the present. The poster presentation would be an examination of the implications that such elements would have on the collection and on the representation of communities– and I will illustrate in real time how adding folksonomies into the current taxonomy …

A Digital Humanities Partnership With The Harvard Center For Hellenic Studies (Panel D), Christine Tulley
Network Detroit: Digital Humanities Theory and Practice
In this presentation, I describe the results from participating in Sunoikisis at the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies and how the participation cultivates an introduction to the digital humanities in a graduate rhetoric program. Some of the direct benefits graduate students received from participation in the program were 1) weekly lectures taught live in a Google Hangout chat from classics scholars to showcase digital humanities methods, 2) a semester wide discussion on Homer and the debate over the start of rhetoric as a field of study (using Rachel Knudsen’s Homer and the Origins of Rhetoric as a starting bridge text …

Building A Community Of Practice Bridging Making And Thinking (Panel B), Julie Thompson Klein
Network Detroit: Digital Humanities Theory and Practice
The field of Digital Humanities spans many communities of practice, from design of digital texts, archives, and libraries to cultural studies of new technologies and media. The discourse of Making is fostering a new community of practice emerging from intersections of the epistemology, rhetoric, and aesthetics of building. Building tools is being reconceptualized from a reductive mechanical production to an intellectual endeavor with its own practices, theory, and standards. Framed by the historical boundary between thinking and doing, the emergence of this expanding community was signaled by the shift from the label ”humanities computing” to “digital humanities.” Growing theorization of …

Celebration of Learning
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Copleoptera: Buprestidae) is a destructive colonizer of ash trees that arrived in the United States in 2002. Since then, EAB has been detected in 22 states and two Canadian provinces, and has proven to be a complicated management issue for many cities including Rock Island. The purpose of this study was to determine the spatial distribution and density of the EAB infestation in Rock Island, Ill and to identify potential correlations between host larval densities and visual symptoms. A continuation of spatial distribution was determined through a tree survey examining specific species …

Managing A Large Scale Project: Using Strengthsfinder In The Website Redesign, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
After doing a library-wide StrengthsFinder assessment that highlighted the strengths of its individuals, EKU Libraries decided to put this strategy into practice by applying it to one of the most complex projects in the life of an academic library: the website redesign. This decentralized approach allowed project managers to align strengths-based teams with phases of the redesign that would most benefit from that team’s unique strengths.

Promoting Health And Quality Of Life Along The Care Continuum: Creating A Nursing Curriculum For Today’S Health Care Environment, Kathleen D. Black, Mary Bouchaud, Denise Brown
College of Nursing Posters
Background
The focus on traditional acute, hospital-based health care is being replaced with a new paradigm aimed at providing primary care, care of populations, and care across transitions and providers. The Institute of Medicine’s report (2010), the “Future of Nursing” emphasized the need for nurses to lead health care change and called for nursing education focused on a community and population-based perspective, person centered care, and emerging roles for nurses across the care continuum. In response, the Jefferson College of Nursing embarked on the ambitious task of designing a new and innovative baccalaureate nursing curriculum over a 13 month period.

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In addition to keeping their own professional skills up to date, new managers need to learn quickly how to think strategically, delegate, and successfully supervise and lead their staff. In most cases, these skills are learned on the job, without prior training or with limited mentoring. We will draw on what we learned from the literature and from our own experience to illustrate the skills that we feel contribute the most to the making of a great manager and, ultimately, an effective leader.

Biology
Widespread Malosma laurina (Laurel Sumac) dieback is occurring throughout the Santa Monica Mountains. M. laurina is a keystone species within the SMM and its deep roots provide necessary slope stability to the hillsides; therefore, M. laurina’s health is of ecological importance. This study examines whether M. laurina dieback is associated with decreased stem water transport due to the prevalence of a pathogenic fungus within the water transport tissue. Stem samples from dieback and healthy control M. laurina were cultured for fungal growth. 100% of samples from water transport tissue from dieback adult plants contained a fungal pathogen from the …

Preliminary Results From A Ground Based Magnetometer Rotation Table, Rachel Newman, April Gross, Jolene Johnson, Kaye Smith, Erick Agrimson, James Flaten
2017 Academic High Altitude Conference
Understanding high altitude balloon rotation is important for many types of scientific measurements, therefore, balloon and payload rotation is a continuing area of interest and research. In this work, we present results obtained from an Arduino logged magnetometer rotated on a ground based rotation table. This table allowed us to precisely rotate and locate the Arduino logged magnetometer. We compare the Arduino logged results with “known magnetic field orientation” using an AIM rocketry altimeter. This comparison allowed us to test the accuracy of our Arduino logged results and the sampling capabilities of our magnetometer system using different rotational speeds.

In this poster presentation we report on a high altitude balloon project conducted with third-graders from Gower West Elementary School in Willowbrook, IL in spring 2016. In the weeks before the launch students used a vacuum jar to investigate the effects of pressure changes on different objects, substances and sounds in the classroom and conducted pressure, temperature and wind measurements inside and outside of their school using Vernier probeware. To learn how to use the balloon tracking equipment and how to fill a balloon and prepare it for launch, students simulated a flight with a tethered balloon outside of their …
High Altitude Cosmic Ray Detection, Jordan D. Van Nest
High Altitude Cosmic Ray Detection, Jordan D. Van Nest
2017 Academic High Altitude Conference
Cosmic rays are high energy atomic nuclei travelling near the speed of light that collide with atoms and molecules in Earth’s upper atmosphere (primarily with nitrogen and oxygen), breaking down into a shower of particles of various energies in the stratosphere. As they travel earthward, these particles continue to break down and lose energy which results in relatively little ionizing radiation reaching the surface. Due to the scattering of cosmic rays, the angle at which the rays enter the atmosphere can affect the number and energies of ionizing particles detected at various altitudes. When using a standard Geiger counter on …
