Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John Jackson

Librarian Publications & Presentations

One of the five strategic goals of the William H. Hannon Library is to contribute to “formative and transformative education of the whole person through outreach and programming.” Through events such as the annual Haunting of Hannon, the Hannon Human Library, and the Spring Women’s Voices series, the library outreach team at Loyola Marymount University seeks to create experiences that reach beyond connecting students to information resources and highlight the library as a transformative force in student life. Measuring the success of these experiences requires targeted evaluation methods similar to those used for library instruction. This presentation will outline the …

Using Fundamental Chemistry To Make Functional Materials For Solar Energy Conversion Applications, Kylie N. Heupel, Haley M. Sizemore, Judith L. Jenkins Nov 2016

Using Fundamental Chemistry To Make Functional Materials For Solar Energy Conversion Applications, Kylie N. Heupel, Haley M. Sizemore, Judith L. Jenkins

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Population growth and rapidly increasing energy consumption necessitate innovative materials for energy conversion and storage. Gains in solar electricity and battery technologies are evidenced by the availability of commercial products. However viable solar fuel platforms—where the energy in sunlight is used to form storable fuels such as hydrogen gas—have not yet been realized, motivating the work presented here. In order to produce hydrogen gas from sunlight and water, a photocatalyst is required. The ideal photocatalyst for hydrogen gas generation absorbs solar photons (sunlight), producing high-energy electrons necessary for the reduction of hydrogen ions in water. The host nanocrystal studied here, …

Purpose

To determine if the rulings in the 10 war powers cases could best be explained by the ideologies of …

Swimming Mechanisms of Temperate Forest Ants (Camponotus pennsylvanicus and Formica subsericea)

Noah D. Gripshover, Evan M. Gora, and Stephen P. Yanoviak

University of Louisville

Abstract

Environmental challenges shape the evolution of animal behavior and morphology. For wingless terrestrial invertebrates like ants, pools of water on the forest floor are particularly dangerous. Here we show that ants can overcome this obstacle using a modified gait to transverse the water surface. We compared the locomotor morphology and swimming performance of two arboreal ant species that are common in Kentucky (Camponotus pennsylvanicus and Formica subsericea). We defined performance as speed …

Pull Don't Pour" Using Oral Language And The Power Of Dialogue To Shape Intellectual Capacity, Janice Elam Carter Nov 2016

Pull Don't Pour" Using Oral Language And The Power Of Dialogue To Shape Intellectual Capacity, Janice Elam Carter

Inclusion Across the Lifespan Conference

For students who struggle to learn it is difficult to confidently participate verbally in class discussions, make recitations, or simply respond to questions posed orally. Let's build a sense of intellectual curiosity by using Socratic questioning, drawing out of the student rather than simply pouring information in. Help students extract meaning from the text with the assistance of an expert mediator, not a worksheet. Participant Objectives: Historically, teaching has included lecturing, dispensing information and imparting knowledge to our students. The primary "student talk" in the classroom had been recitation. It has been found that this method inhibits student thinking. Participants …

The Impact Of Management On The Movement And Home Range Size Of Indiana's Eastern Hellbender Salamanders, Emily B. Mccallen, Bart T. Kraus, Nick G. Burgmeier, Rod N. Williams

Purdue GIS Day

Eastern hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis) are a large, fully aquatic salamander species distributed throughout watersheds in the eastern United States. In Indiana, hellbenders were once found in tributaries of the Ohio River and the Wabash River but are now restricted to a single river in the southern portion of the state. Monitoring within the Blue River over twenty years has revealed a steady decrease in the total abundance of hellbenders and a shift towards older individuals in the age structure of the population. Concerned over the apparent lack of recruitment, the Indiana department of natural resources performed a series of …

Predicting U. S. Presidential Elections: From 1900 Until Today, Richard L. Hogan Nov 2016

Predicting U. S. Presidential Elections: From 1900 Until Today, Richard L. Hogan

Purdue GIS Day

This presentation is scheduled for the weekend before the presidential election of 2016. By then, we might all need a break from pollsters and predictions, although we still might be looking for some assurance that this will not be the end of Western Civilization as we knew it. Toward that end, a little historical perspective on presidential elections since 1900, complete with cool maps, of course, indicating partisanship by state, will illustrate several important hypotheses that the data suggest we might incorporate in our efforts to predict the future by explaining the past. Neither candidate has approved this message.

An international team of archaeologists conducted a surface survey of the remains on Dana Island, ancient Pithussae, near Silifke in south Coastal Turkey. The island sits 2 km offshore and is uninhabited. Architectural remains of stone quarries, large cisterns, houses and churches extend approximately 1.6 km along its western coast. At the crest of the mountain that rises above the shore stands the remains of an Iron Age fortress incorporated into later Byzantine structures. Relying on a base map constructed of the Google earth view of the island, digitized topographical maps, and an aerial photograph from 1990, the pedestrian team …

How Gis Will Support Next Gen 9-1-1, Jim I. Sparks

Purdue GIS Day

While most practitioners have a general awareness that GIS will play a more prominent role in Next Generation 9-1-1, few have much definitive information about what that means for Indiana GIS. This presentation will provide background information and an introduction to the requirements that NG 9-1-1 will place on our location data. Time will be left for some discussion centered on the challenges that are ahead of us.
