Youngstown, Oh: A Shrinking City's New Economic Plan, Kya Williams
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Economic development is important for the success of a city. It helps improve the quality of life for the people and the community. Youngstown, OH was once nicknamed Steel Valley for it was surrounded by steel mills. As the demand for steel declined, so did the economy of Youngstown. Over the years, half of the city’s population relocated. Youngstown is a shrinking city that is targeting investments and new technology. The immediate objective of this research project is to examine economic and community development that is shaping the city of Youngstown. The city came up with the Youngstown 2010 Plan …
Crime Addiction Scale, Camden Wesley Everidge
Crime Addiction Scale, Camden Wesley Everidge
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Although it has been theorized that high levels of criminality can be understood as involving the seeking of excitement, and feelings of power, there are currently no scales or empirical approaches that have been offered to measure this. The crime addiction scale will measure an addictive crime hypothesis which suggests that the positive stimulation that derives from committing crime may lead to an addiction of criminality. The scale will question the criminals on how much power they felt, how much they felt they would gain, how exciting it was, and how much fun did they believe they would have. There …
Syrian Refugees: Morality Or Security?, Michael H. Fields
Syrian Refugees: Morality Or Security?, Michael H. Fields
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The Syrian Civil War has been an ongoing conflict and struggle since it began in 2011. Syrian’s may have been unsatisfied with the dictatorship that they were subject to, but certainly they had never hoped for this “revolution” to have such a negative impact on the country and their lives. Thus, the civil war has spawned millions of refugees from Syria. Despite these existing problems, the United States under President Trump decided to take in Syrian refugees no longer. Is there a real justification for this action?
Answering this question requires one to consider why we would fear these refugees …

Society Disconnect, Evan G. Robinson
Society Disconnect, Evan G. Robinson
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
This study is aimed at learning the effects of social media and cellphone use on interpersonal communication. My reseach will look at how people use their social media and cellphones to communicate, instead of face-to-face interpersonal communication. I feel that social media and cellphones create barrier for users, and that this translates when using interpersonal communication when speaking face-to-face with another. I will be using "Organizational Information Theory, created by Karl Weick. This theory looks at different channels of communication we chose to use so we can increase the speed of messages that we send" (West, 2013). However, I feel …
Relational Closeness And Disclosure Between Siblings, Lila R. Chirico
Relational Closeness And Disclosure Between Siblings, Lila R. Chirico
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Abstract
The Purpose of the Research:
The purpose of the research is to determine how closeness and disclosure within sibling relationships can affect overall acceptance through themes of sibling competition, intimacy, and privacy, and how these themes serve as a reflection for past and future relationships.
The Scientific or Scholarly Rationale:
Familial relationships are the basis of knowledge and involve lifelong relationships from the moment of birth until death, providing more depth than friendships due to similar characteristics and family histories. The research regarding sibling relationships target youth and adolescents, but are lacking in continued discovery within adult relationships. The …

Se describe la variación provocada por el nivel sociocultural y el sexo de los hablantes, así como la condicionada por …
Does Where You Grow Up Affect Your Chances Of Being Drafted Into The Nfl?, Walker Head
Does Where You Grow Up Affect Your Chances Of Being Drafted Into The Nfl?, Walker Head
Georgia College Student Research Events
The minimum rookie salary in the National Football League (NFL) is $450,000. First round picks often sign multi-year contracts worth more than $10 million. Players from some states are much more likely to receive college scholarships and eventually be drafted into the NFL, but it is not clear if this is a causal relationship. Utilizing data from Rivals and the NFL, I attempt to determine if where a player grew up has an impact on his chances of being drafted to play professional football. I focus on the top eight states, as it relates to percentage of recruits and my …
The Impact Of A Mentoring Program On Adolescent Girls’ Self-Esteem, Natalie C. Flanders
The Impact Of A Mentoring Program On Adolescent Girls’ Self-Esteem, Natalie C. Flanders
Georgia College Student Research Events
Adolescents in the modern world often find themselves facing pressures and influences from family, friends and society. Influences such as advertisement and media are readily available through social media and internet. Girls are especially vulnerable to the pressure in maintaining an ideal body image due to stereotypical female images being portrait as beautiful and attractive. It often results in girl’s preoccupation with beauty and peers’ perceptions, along with other risky behaviors (Galeotti, 2015). Past research found support through a mentoring relationship can have profound impacts on adolescents social-emotional, cognitive, and identity development (Schwartz, Lowe, & Rhodes, 2012). Youth mentoring is …
The Uneven Scales Of Lady Justice, Jessica H. Shepard
The Uneven Scales Of Lady Justice, Jessica H. Shepard
Georgia College Student Research Events
For centuries, women have been assigned a specific gender role, and men hold them accountable to stay within this role. When these roles are broken, severe punishment or dismissal can be the result. From the Demonic age to today, as well as the different schools of criminology, the way women have been treated has been documented. The evil woman theory introduces the idea that when women commit a crime, they are no longer acting in the stereotypical way of a woman; therefore, punishment should be more severe. On the other side, some men treat women with chivalry, seeing them as …
Kinetics Of Crystal Violet Color Fading Via A Small Footprint Diode Array Spectrometer, Paige Lott
Kinetics Of Crystal Violet Color Fading Via A Small Footprint Diode Array Spectrometer, Paige Lott
Georgia College Student Research Events
Crystal violet is a pH indicator and is commonly used to classify bacteria. In acidic solutions, crystal violet is yellow in color and at approximately the pH of 1.6, it transitions to a violet color. Over time, this violet color fades as it reacts with the CO 2 in the air until it is clear. A small footprint visible-near- infrared spectrometer (Vis-NIR) with diode array detector was employed in this investigation. Using the software that operates the spectrometer, the absorbance of crystal violet solutions can be measured at 585 nm at high concentrations of base as a function of time. …

There are multiple studies analyzing people's conversations through social media data sources such as Facebook and Twitter (Ghiassi et al., 2015, Abbasi et al., 2014, Marquez et al., 2013, Rodrigues et al., 2016). Opinion mining, or sentiment analysis, is commonly applied to social media conversations to discover how people feel and their level of affect toward a specific topic. Multiple methods exist to perform sentiment analysis which can result in different outcomes. The goal of this research is to investigate two methods (sci-kit learn and vader) for calculating the sentiment expressed in user Twitter feeds and to report on the …

Moving Target Defense Intrusion Detection System, Brycent Chatfield
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
The smart grid solution brings about significant improvement in reliability, performance, and manageability by integrating two-way communication technology into the current power grid. Added inter-connectivity enables consumers and energy suppliers to take advantage of convenience, dependability, and energy savings provided by real time energy management. However, the convergence of communication technology and energy systems creates a new realm of network security issues ranging from a larger attack surface to an abundance of sensitive information available to an intruder. Network stability is achieved by means of intrusion detection systems (IDS). An intrusion detection system monitors a network or system for malicious …
