Effects Of Chronic Illness On Self-Image In Adolescents, Krista Stillson

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

EFFECTS OF CHRONIC ILLNESS ON SELF-IMAGE IN ADOLESCENTS:

AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Krista Stillson

Abstract

Background: Chronic illness can pose more than just pathological effects on an individual. During the vulnerable developmental stage of adolescence, the psychological effects of disease can be equally as damaging. In adolescence, manifestations of chronic illness can cause a distorted self-image which may potentiate negative outcomes such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. For this reason, it is important for nurses to be aware of the broad impact that can accompany disease and use interventions to counteract such effects. Implementation of coping interventions can help …

Erin Gallagher and Megan Russ

Faculty Sponsor: Christina Lattner, DNP, APRN, AGNP-C, ANP-BC

Background: The lack of social interaction among the elderly population has been directly linked with higher rates of morbidity related to diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and heart disease, thus leading to higher rates of mortality.

Objectives: This comprehensive literature review selected a variety of social interactions to present to the elderly population to examine if an increase in socialization will decrease the depressive symptoms felt during social isolation.

Method: An integrative literature review of both qualitative and …

A Low Carbohydrate, Ketogenic Diet for Treatment

of Type II Diabetes: An Integrative Literature Review

Steven Lisowski

Faculty Sponsor: Larry Maturin

Using Debriefing As A More Beneficial Approach To Nurses Who Experience Patient Death: An Integrative Review, Sarah Borghi

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: The death of a nurses’ patient can result in effects both personal and professional. A majority of nursing literature addresses how the nurse can assist a patient through grief. A universal evidence based intervention to assist nurses through a patient death experience does not exist. One specific method, debriefing, was found in multiple primary sources as an intervention to use for healthcare workers.

Objectives: This integrative literature review investigates if debriefing is more beneficial to nurses who experience patient death than other present approaches.

Method: The health promotion framework used to support this integrative literature review was the …

EFFECTIVE COPING MECHANISMS FOR PEDIATRIC NURSES WORKING WITH CRITICALLY AND TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Jenna Gatziolis

Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Kim Amer, PhD, RN

Background: One of the hardest aspects of pediatric nursing is dealing with the death of young and sick children. Because the death of a child is a traumatic event, special consideration must be taken into account as to how pediatric nurses are able to effectively cope with the death of a child. Oftentimes the emotional needs for nurses are overlooked and not discussed leading to poor personal and career related outcomes for the nurse.

Objectives: …

Approaches To The Care Of Geriatric, Terminally Ill Oncology Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Lauren Gersten

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Background: The second leading cause of death for the geriatric population in the United States, persons aged 65 years and older, is cancer. The over 65 population comprises most cancer diagnoses and presents a high mortality rate. The terminally-ill, geriatric oncology population also is among the most complex due to comorbidities and other special considerations (McCarthy et al., 2014, p. 197).

Objective: The purpose of this integrative literature review was to answer the following questions: What resources are currently available to help guide the care for geriatric, terminally ill oncology patients? Are the current resources sufficient to determine optimal care …

Barriers That Cause Delayed Breast Cancer Screenings Among Older Adult African-American Women: An Integrative Literature Review, Sophia Damtew Nov 2017

Barriers That Cause Delayed Breast Cancer Screenings Among Older Adult African-American Women: An Integrative Literature Review, Sophia Damtew

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: In the U.S., breast cancer incidence has increased among older adult African-American women, particularly among those aged 60 to79 while white women have either decreased or stabilized (CDC, 2016). Within the last 10 years, breast cancer mortality rates are approximately 40% higher among African-American women compared to white women (CDC, 2016). Many barriers limit breast cancer screenings among this population. Recognizing and addressing specific barriers may improve utilization of breast cancer screenings in the future.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify barriers that caused delayed breast cancer screenings among older adult African-American women.

Method: The …

Hiv/Aids Among Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Bridget Malato Nov 2017

Hiv/Aids Among Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Bridget Malato

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

There is a disproportionate number of black men who have sex with men (BMSM) diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus, also known as acquired immunodeficiency disease (HIV/AIDS) when compared to other populations such as Caucasian men who have sex with men. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that among all gay and bisexual men diagnosed with HIV in the United States, black men accounted for the highest number, followed by Caucasian, then Hispanics/Latinos. The purpose of this research is to understand why this disparity exists and how nurses can help mitigate it. A conceptual framework was necessary to comprehend …

Targeting Cancer Stem Cells In Recurrent Lung Cancer, Karen T. Udoh Nov 2017

Targeting Cancer Stem Cells In Recurrent Lung Cancer, Karen T. Udoh

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in the world. Five-year survivability still remains dismal due to drug resistance. The development of drug resistance with cisplatin or platinum/taxane combination chemotherapies has led patients to suffer from recurrent lung cancer. These chemotherapy treatments target cancer cells but leave behind cancer stem cells. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are stem-like tumor cells that have the potential to differentiate, self-renew, and proliferate. This allows the cancer to relapse even after initial elimination of the tumor. We hypothesize that Verrucarin J will inhibit cell proliferation in lung cancer cells and CSCs by inducing …

Inciting Action: Assessment Reporting Strategies That Fuel Change And Improve Learning, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard

Libraries

All assessment practitioners know the penultimate goal is loop closing. But we also live with the reality that assessment is also beholden to the Gods of Accountability. As assessment professionals, we dutifully attend to the cycle of improving student learning, but at each step in the cycle we must continue to hone our skills. Results reporting may seem like the least sexy of all of the steps in our practice, but we argue that is singularly important and represents a high art of assessment craft. Results must be engaging, actionable, meet accountability mandates, and importantly read by those who can …

The Effect Of Drought On The Comparative Fitness Of Purple Needle Grass (Stipa Pulchra) In The Presence Of An Invasive Weed, Grace M. Palmer, Taylor M. Purdy, Stephen D. Davis

Biology

Studies on the relative health of Stipa pulchra, a California native perennial bunchgrass, were conducted at the transplant garden on the Drescher campus of Pepperdine University in the Spring semesters of 2016 and 2017. Following the trend of other perennial native grasses, Stipa pulchra is dwindling due to competition with Avena fatua and other invasive species introduced by human activities. In 2016, in the midst of historic five-year drought in California, stomatal conductance, dark adapted fluorescence, water potential, and height of S. pulchra and A. fatua were recorded and compared. As hypothesized, the wild S. pulchra exhibited greater overall fitness-- …
