Socioeconomic Influences On Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia's Counties, Mary Passley
Socioeconomic Influences On Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia's Counties, Mary Passley
Student Scholar Showcase
Most research on factors and causes of crime, whether property or violent crime, focuses on individuals’ behavior or their surrounding environment. In this research, I explore the idea of socioeconomic factors correlated to property crime. I conducted a retrospective design to fully explore United States Census data and crime data gathered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to discover statistically significant variables connected to property crime. Significant findings were shown by average people per house and retail sales per capita in all counties. Additional significant findings were percent employment change and percent with high school degree or higher in low …

Macrophage Infiltration And Activation In Old And Young Skeletal Muscle Following Lengthening Contractions, Jamie P. Kaluhiokalani, Jacob R. Sorensen, Robert D. Hyldahl
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2019
•Human skeletal muscle is capable of robust regeneration following damage. •Muscle repair following injury is dependent on the timely activity of pro-inflammatory (M1) and anti-inflammatory, pro-regenerative (M2) macrophages. Following acute muscle injury, healthy skeletal muscle experiences a rapid and vigorous inflammatory response. •Macrophages clear necrotic tissue and facilitate satellite cell behavior through the secretion of cytokines and growth factors. •It is known that aged muscle experiences poor regenerative potential following injury, but the cause is not well-understood.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate macrophage behavior in old and young people in the context of muscle damage.

Characteristics of Soils under Common Management Practices
on Farms in Western Kentucky
River O. Dowell and Iin P. Handayani, Murray State University, Kentucky
ABSTRACT
Properly understanding the importance of soil properties and how they continuously change is a key to achieving sustainability in agriculture. This study was conducted to observe the changes of soil properties regarding common tillage systems in Kentucky. Undisturbed and disturbed soil samples were collected from Butler County, KY at depths of 0-7.5 cm and 7.5-15 cm from four sites representing the different management practices of conventional tillage, no-till, pasture, and woodlands. The samples were analyzed for …

An Economic Growth Analysis Of Native American Reservations In California, Mahsa Ashabi
An Economic Growth Analysis Of Native American Reservations In California, Mahsa Ashabi
Economics Faculty Publications
A history of institutional oppression and genocide has shaped Native American communities across the United States today, reflected in large disparities of socioeconomic outcomes and productivity. Due to a lack of comprehensive data and macroeconomic research, alternative forms of spatial data and theories regarding human settlement develop a lens of understanding of this stagnation. In our efforts to better understand growth on Native American reservations, we utilize nighttime lights data to proxy for economic output in these geographic areas, measuring the settlement characteristics of reservations themselves and against surrounding U.S. regions. Through a series of log-log regressions that focus on Zipf’s …

Use Of Medical Marijuana And Cannabinoids To Treat Headache Pain: A Critifically Appraised Topic, Lilly Shupe, Sean Edmonds
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
Globally, 75% of adults report to have had at least one headache in 2017.1 Headaches are painful and disabling features of migraines, tension headaches, medication overuse headaches and cluster headaches.
- There are several ways to treat headaches: analgesics, specific anti-migraine medications, prophylactic medications, and opioids.
- Clinically, finding a more effective and less harmful treatment for headaches is important to avoiding the negative effects that may accompany opioid use.
- Given the opioid crisis and potential for abuse, it is essential to find safer and healthier ways to give patients the relief that they need.
Medical marijuana is composed of active cannabinoids …

Gottfried Bohm was destined to the drafting table from the beginning due to his father being a successful architect. Early in Bohm’s career he followed his father’s footsteps designing small churches until around the end of world war two in which he found his calling, and that was to rebuild the rubble left by the hand of war into something greater than before. Bohm always maintained a level of passion in his work, always relating his work to a bigger picture, making connections with lineage and history. As a member of the “Society for the Reconstruction of Cologne” he not …

ARC3743 Final Projects
For this project we were to research the life of one of the most significant Japanese architects, Kengo Kuma. He is recognized for his ability to create "The totality of architecture" by activating the senses and focusing people's attentions on the space itself. Many events have shaped his style but he stays true to himself and continues to create transparent spaces with vehicular techniques and the help of craftsmen. Kengo Kuma is currently at the peak of his career with Tokyo's National Stadium under construction. This project communicates the diversity of Japan and will promote Japanese architecture to the globalization.

Centaur Screenwriting With 345m Gpt-2: The Problems And Possibilities Of Ai-Generated Creative Content For The Screen, Olivia Kane
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
In a world of technological advances, the line between human and artificially generated content is becoming increasingly blurred. AI generated visual art proves more pleasing to the eye, and music composed by computers is nearly indistinguishable from that of a human musician. The written word, however, seems to be one of the last great frontiers that artificial intelligence has yet to perfect. Our innate human ability to recognize anomalies in language prevents current platforms like GTP-2 from being effective in generating creative content on its own. Human interference and editing, however, may be able to create a new brand of …

Can Artificial Intelligence Be Creative?, Alexander Beatty
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
In a recently published essay, Sean Dorrance Kelly, a Philosophy professor at Harvard University, proposes his arguments for why he does not believe artificial intelligence has the capacity for true creativity. As one may expect from an individual of his profession, Kelly makes a compelling case for his claim; however, at its core, the piece is routed in the individual's natural biases and limited knowledge of the tech. As his piece is of the highest caliber of literature on the subject, it beautifully summarizes the most compelling arguments against artificial creativity. In this project, I will break down the key …

Negative Parenting Predicts Observed Shame In Preschoolers, Alli Hollender, Ara Nazmiyal, Sabrina Genoveese
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Shame, which involves a global negative evaluation of the self after transgressing, is consistently associated with depression in children and adults. Studies have been found that children can display elevated levels of shame as early as age three. Negative parenting practices such as rejection, ignoring, and criticism have been found to predict children's shame in middle childhood adolescence. Virtually no studies have examined whether negative parenting predicts shame during preschool, when shame emotions are developing. The purpose of this study was to examine whether negative parenting predicts preschoolers' shame. This study examined data from one time point of the Preschool …
