Social media has become a predominant feature in contemporary culture and it is increasingly important that scholars assess the impact and implications of its many facets. As online sharing tools like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and others, continue to evolve, so does the way we interact with, and manipulate, these platforms – as complex tools, allowing us to freely share, create, and connect with one another. Current scholarly analysis of social media platforms, internet communities, and online content creation fails to include the perspective of the younger generation who grew up heavily influenced by social media content. While there is ample …

Automating The Authority Control Process, Stacey Wolf
Automating The Authority Control Process, Stacey Wolf
OVGTSL 2019
Authority control is an important part of cataloging since it helps provide consistent access to names, titles, subjects, and genre/forms. There are a variety of methods for providing authority control, ranging from manual, time-consuming processes to automated processes. However, the automated processes often seem out of reach for small libraries when it comes to using a pricey vendor or needing a cataloger with particular expertise. This presentation will introduce several ideas on how to handle authority control using a variety of tools, both paid and free. The presenter will describe how their library handles authority control; compare vendors and programs …
Rda Adoption In U.S. Public Libraries, Sevim Mccutcheon
Rda Adoption In U.S. Public Libraries, Sevim Mccutcheon
OVGTSL 2019
This study surveyed the state of knowledge about, and adoption of, RDA among American public library catalogers. In 2017 an online survey request was e-mailed to 4000 public libraries for the person most responsible for cataloging. Over 300 libraries responded. Data collected nationally included geographic location, education level, training history and needs, library size and budget. Evidence points to demographic factors having a strong influence on levels of RDA knowledge, with a dramatic urban/rural divide. While a majority of catalogers know about RDA, their working knowledge about it differs substantially depending on whether they work in rural or urban library …
Little Fish In A Big Pond : A Kentucky Public Library Joins Naco, Victoria Greenwell, Kristin Anderson, Robert Collins
Little Fish In A Big Pond : A Kentucky Public Library Joins Naco, Victoria Greenwell, Kristin Anderson, Robert Collins
OVGTSL 2019
Many public libraries undervalue the need for good authority control and since NACO has vastly more academic libraries than public libraries, many of our authority needs may be going unanswered. Our library catalog alone has tens of thousands of local authorities that need to be created. How many does yours have?
This presentation will cover the reasons this library chose to join NACO, as well as its long and error-filled path to get its application approved, a story that is humorous in its coincidence, misunderstandings and just sheer, dumb luck. We will also touch on the extensive training involved and …

Opening Keynote: Storytelling & Power In Technical Services, Hannah Buckland
OVGTSL 2019
Stories—as well as language and words themselves—articulate value, identifying what is significant about our histories and our relationships. In this way, storytelling is a form of power, a way of organizing the world. Technical services work, in turn, does more than create, locate, or describe; it also contributes to an ongoing story libraries communicate to users, a story about how something came to be, a story about power dynamics, and a story of how something is connected to everything.

First Year Learning Communities (FYLC) at City Tech is structured to provide first-year students in linked courses an interdisciplinary learning experience. This approach creates opportunities for students to form bonds within the college community. A shared belief among faculty leaders in the potential for writing to transform the student experience led to the development of the “Our Stories” digital writing project. “Our Stories” offers FYLC students the opportunity to express their experiences in classes, seminars, lectures, study groups, and labs on the OpenLab, a digital platform for teaching, learning, and sharing. Through this project, students shared their stories and revealed …

All Musselman Library Staff Works
Collaborating with your campus teaching and learning center is a key way to center the library at the heart of conversations on creative pedagogy and student learning. Librarians at a small college library will share how their collaboration has enabled their information literacy program to ripple across campus – expanding their teaching practice beyond the usual one-shot and shifting faculty perceptions of librarians as classroom partners. The presenters will describe how they have contributed their expertise to teaching center programming and administered a series of center-funded faculty grants for information literacy, digital literacy, and teaching with archival materials.
Promoting Discipline Specific Literacy For Law & Paralegal Studies Students: Libguides As Transitional & Professional Tools, Marissa Moran, Kimberly Abrams
Promoting Discipline Specific Literacy For Law & Paralegal Studies Students: Libguides As Transitional & Professional Tools, Marissa Moran, Kimberly Abrams
Publications and Research
Developing LibGuides for Law and Paralegal Studies students at New York City College of Technology arose from the following question: how do we change the way legal studies students think of the Library as a resource to better assist them in their transition to college level-research and a future career as a paralegal. At the heart of this question is the importance of discipline-specific information literacy at the college and professional levels. Many students have difficulty with locating relevant information to complete course assignments partly because library resources are both fragmented and cohesive. Thus, while part of the transition to …

Flexi Discs: The Audio Format That Time Forgot And Remembered Again, Junior R. Tidal
Publications and Research
Flexi discs, also known as phonosheets and Soundsheets, are “flexible” plastic sheets that can be played on turntables. This audio format was used for a wide variety of purposes including promotional materials, giveaways, and inserts into magazines, stemming from their origins in playable chocolate discs in the early 1900s (Parks, 2018). At one point in time it was a $9 million dollar business, with the U.S. government as one of the top users of the technology (Penchansky, 1979). Their disposable nature, weight, ability to print directly on material, and affordable manufacturing made the flexi disc an alternative to vinyl pressings. …
Finding Connections: Making An Existing Biology Course Interdisciplinary And Using The Experience For The Traditional Course And Oers, Tatiana Voza
Publications and Research
Adapting an existing introductory biology course to make it interdisciplinary and successful is an interesting experience and process. With imperatives such as lecture and lab components, a dense curriculum, preexisting learning outcomes and students with different levels of interest, adding material to provide relevant context show how both scientific and social knowledge relate to broader aspects of the human experience, can be challenging. However, once achieved such a course provides epistemological value, real-world context and a rewarding and enriching experience for both students and faculty. In this presentation, the steps involved in designing and implementing an interdisciplinary biology course (Biology …

Awareness Of Emotions Leads To Self-Efficacy Among College Students, Amy Lee, Emily M. Delacruz
Awareness Of Emotions Leads To Self-Efficacy Among College Students, Amy Lee, Emily M. Delacruz
Publications and Research
Self-efficacy is one’s belief in their own ability to succeed in a particular situation or accomplish a task (Bandura, 1977). Previous research has shown that the effort one puts into achieving goals, coping abilities, and behavior in the face of opposition are all heavily influenced by efficacy beliefs. Self reflection and knowledge of inner feelings, areas in which one excel, areas in which one do poorly, and areas in which one need to improve aid in the establishment of goals (Bandura, 1977 & Cervone, 2004). Inner feelings are bound to occur when one make sense of what one can and …

Digital Badging, Information Literacy, And Business School Curriculum: Preparing Students For The Workplace Through Micro-Credentials, Wendy G. Pothier
Digital Badging, Information Literacy, And Business School Curriculum: Preparing Students For The Workplace Through Micro-Credentials, Wendy G. Pothier
University Library Scholarship
As digital badging expands its reach into higher education, the merits of using badges in information literacy instruction grow more compelling. Badging allows students to demonstrate acquired skills to future employers in areas such as library research by showing earned competencies, which are shareable on platforms such as LinkedIn. Badges also familiarize students with the concept of micro-credentials, which they are likely to encounter in their careers.
Over the last two years, librarians at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) have developed an information literacy game and digital badge that are embedded into the Peter T. Paul School of Business …
Genetic Diversity Of Local Canines Assessed By Derived Cleaved Amplified Polymorphic Sequences, Nicole Benmoshe, Jeremy Seto
Genetic Diversity Of Local Canines Assessed By Derived Cleaved Amplified Polymorphic Sequences, Nicole Benmoshe, Jeremy Seto
Publications and Research
Breeding of the dog, Canis Iupus familiaris, over centuries has given rise to the selection of certain traits including size, shape, coat length, color and many behavioral traits. Inbreeding within dog breeds has resulted in the increase of genetic diseases, many of which are similar to human diseases making the dog an exemplary model organism to study. Using dCAPS (Derived Cleaved Amplified Polymorphic Sequences) we can identify SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) in the dog genome using buccal samples collected from four local dogs of different breeds, both large and small. After performing DNA extractions, PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), restriction enzyme …
The Snowball Chamber: A Supercooled Approach To Dark Matter Detection, Joshua Martin
The Snowball Chamber: A Supercooled Approach To Dark Matter Detection, Joshua Martin
CURCE Annual Undergraduate Conference
The cloud and bubble chambers have historically been used for particle detection, capitalizing on supersaturation and superheating respectively. We present now on the snowball chamber, which utilizes a supercooled liquid. In our prototypes, an incoming particle triggers crystallization of purified water. We demonstrate that water is supercooled for a significantly shorter time with respect to control data in the presence of AmBe and 252Cf neutron sources. A greater number of multiple nucleation sites are observed as well in neutron calibration data, as in a PICO-style bubble chamber. Similarly, gamma calibration data indicate a high degree of insensitivity to electron recoils …

This presentation will introduce the political participation of Chinese tenants in Manhattan Chinatown in the era of post-Civil Rights Movement. To strive for the self-determination of their communities, the “Model Minority” unprecedentedly participated in social movements named as “Asian American Movement” across the United States in the 1970s. This case study will describe the background, mobilization, and process of a demonstration against the telephone company‘s requisition of land located in Manhattan Chinatown from 1969 to 1970. Consequently, the telephone company was no longer mighty as real estate developers in the early stage of urban renewal, even making a concession to …
Effects Of Macrophages With Dying Heart Cells, Shannon Alexander
Effects Of Macrophages With Dying Heart Cells, Shannon Alexander
CURCE Annual Undergraduate Conference
Cardiovascular disease involves degraded or dying cells, caused from myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. When cardiomyocytes, or heart muscle cells, do not receive a high supply of nutrients and oxygenated blood, proper heart functioning is affected, resulting in MI. One cause of this is atherosclerosis. This is a disease when the arterial lumen becomes narrowed due to plaque build-up. Plaque forms when fat, cholesterol, protein, calcium, and white blood cell deposits gradually build up in the inner artery walls, which progressively impedes the arterial blood flow supply, eventually causing organ cell death. The lipids, and most especially …

Wireless, Battery-Powered Node For Valposensornet, Muhammad Ahmed Naveed
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
The research project was to engineer a Sensor Node that could collect readings of temperature, humidity, time of measurement and battery voltage. The challenge was to make it power efficient as it must run on AA batteries. Since, it was a network of Sensor Node that has to be deployed all around campus therefore it was must for the battery to last at least 9 months before replacement otherwise the very purpose of power efficient would be of no use. Research involved both hardware and software integration as it included programming, designing circuit board and assembling various components together. I …

Interpretations Of The “Gretchen-Figure” In The Works Of Classical Composers, Sara Eveler
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) and his drama Faust have provided inspiration for various other works of art for over two centuries, including for musical productions. Alongside this success, Goethe’s Gretchen-figure has been a character of interest and source of inspiration herself, often portrayed as an image of innocence, naivety, and piety during her devilish relationship with the infamous Faust figure. This research project aims to compare and analyze Goethe’s Gretchen-figure in multiple operas, including Louis Spohr’s “Faust,” Charles Gounod’s “Faust,” Hector Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust,” and Ferruccio Busoni’s “Doktor Faust,” with a special focus on Franz Schubert’s compositions …
To Caffeinate A Revolution: The Historical Importance And Necessity Of The Parisian Café Before And During The French Revolution, Julia Bowlds
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
My research involved discovering the influence of Parisian cafes on the French Revolution. This research reveals some of the less well-known aspects of Parisian cafes and how they influenced many people during this time by being a public space in which one had the power to speak freely. I discuss how these cafes were founded, what kind of coffee was served within them, who frequented these cafes, and various events in which cafes helped the people start and finally sustain the Revolution. The purpose for this research is to explore the origins of Parisian cafes and how a culture’s food …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)
While the American Education System has been under scrutiny for years, Common Core was implemented in 2002. Critics of the system complain that it does not prepare students for college and disregards non-STEM classes such as art and history. The No Child Left Behind policy in particular is beneficial for the students struggling to keep up with their classmates but is detrimental to the students who have the potential to move ahead. The United Nations Quality Education Sustainability Goal strives to provide high-quality education to everyone, and the No Child Left Behind Policy counteracts this goal. Our approach is to …

Hear Me Out: Communication And Peer Support For Adults With Hearing Loss, Emma Furness
Senior Honors Projects
Progressive hearing loss is a natural part of aging. It can take adults an average of seven years between the time they perceive they have a hearing loss and they see an audiologist for testing, diagnosis, and treatment. Dealing with hearing loss can be extremely stressful and confusing for both the patient and the family. After receiving the diagnosis of hearing loss, the patient’s next step is to discuss all options with theaudiologist including hearing aids and assistive listening devices. Being fit with hearing aids is a great start, but patients can benefit from further education and support not always …

50 shades of blue: A study on the uptake of indigo by cationic cotton
Indigo (as a natural dye, and more recently as the synthetic version) has been used for centuries. Its application to cotton is inefficient – the dye has low substantivity for the fiber. In practice, this is overcome by applying the dye in multiple steps. Other dyes (notably the widely used class of ‘reactive dyes’) applied to cotton require the use of much salt, and large amounts of energy and water. The recent development and commercialization of cotton modified with a cationic (positive) charge has offered a …

The extreme growth of New York State population causes to bring more challenges and opportunities for healthcare organization to provide culturally competent service to meet the need of diverse population. According to data from the US Census Bureau, minority groups are projected to make up nearly 50% of the population by the year 2050 compared with 30% in 2000. Outside of ethnicity, there are also many cultural and social groups with which people identify that may affect how they view or receive healthcare. It is very difficult to provide quality service for a diverse population due to language barriers, health …
