Power Characterization: Measuring Adhesion Forces, Kacie Bradfish Aug 2019

Power Characterization: Measuring Adhesion Forces, Kacie Bradfish

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

Powder behavior is a complex topic that influences many industrial processes, especially those involved with food and pharmaceutical processing, and has an important role in homeland security and military applications involving explosives and explosive residues. The goal of the research is to be able to predict bulk flow behavior from milligram-level quantities of powder. This is important for designing better industrial processes, and also for measuring forces between explosive particles and binders for controlling detonations. In order to characterize a powder, a centrifuge is used to determine the rotational speed, in RPM, needed to remove particles of different size from …

More Than You Can Be: Unconventional Usage Of An Institutional Repository In Etd Administrative Processes, Jaime Goldman, Keri Baker

Staff Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Oceanographic Campus Library has always had a unique challenge in that it is the final clearing house for student capstone, thesis, and dissertation binding and publication. The library has traditionally been the host of the final print publication and the liaison between the student and the bindery. With the launch of NSUWorks, NSU’s institutional repository, 6 years ago, the library worked to develop an innovative and effective start to finish workflow for student Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) to change the physical lifecycle of NSU’s theses and dissertations into a virtual ETD lifecycle. Every step of …

Transitioning To All Digital Theses Deposits, Todd Bruns

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group 2019 Meeting

Eastern Illinois University has utilized a moderated deposit method for incorporating theses into our institutional repository, The Keep: Students deliver print copies of their thesis to the library, which are then scanned, digitized, and uploaded to our catalog and the IR. Over the course of the past six months we have worked toward transitioning to all digital uploading. This discussion presents lessons learned and developed work-arounds that may benefit other institutions moving in the same direction.

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips Jul 2019

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding of and ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula. Given …

Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala Jul 2019

Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Predatory publishing is a scourge on the information/library landscape. They waste time, spread spurious information, diminish the power of scholarly research, and damage reputations. Cabell’s lists over 12,000 titles in its Blacklist, most of them in the sciences. Should business librarians be concerned about predatory journals? How can we help our faculty and grad students avoid publishing in fake titles, dissuade them from accepting invitations to be on editorial boards of shoddy journals, and warn them about deceptive conferences?

I'Ll Take Business Databases For 500, Christine Kickels Jul 2019

I'Ll Take Business Databases For 500, Christine Kickels

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Has your library struggled with how to roll out or sunset a new database? Ours has. We use emails, blog posts and peer to peer training, but haven't really been happy with the results. In a culture of assessment and gaming, it was time to try something else. This year we incorporated Quizizz and Kahoot into our rollouts with much success. I'll share our assessments as well as things we learned about the process.

A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner Jul 2019

A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Wharton Research Data Services (commonly known as 'WRDS') is an essential data platform on many university campuses with a research-intensive business program. The platform can host a wide range of data subscriptions including BoardEx, Compustat, CRSP, IBES, Option Metrics, Thompson Reuters data and much more. Often a WRDS subscription is funded through the business program, rather than through the library, but it is essential that business librarians are familiar with this source and if at all possible are able to access and efficiently work through some of the more common data pull requests. As data literacy becomes an increasingly important …

Mapping Il Skills To The Departmental Curriculum, Naomi Schemm Jul 2019

Mapping Il Skills To The Departmental Curriculum, Naomi Schemm

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Problem: some departments use your services heavily for IL instruction, to the point that content gets repetitive for some students. Others use your instruction not at all. Other class visits are hit or miss, based on whether or not you have a relationship with that particular instructor. Attempted solution: mapping specific information literacy skills and database usage onto certain critical classes in a given major. The presenter is piloting this curriculum & IL-skills mapping with the Marketing department in summer 2019, and will give an update on her progress thus far.

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams Jul 2019

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Academic librarians spend a great deal of time teaching students how to use research databases to find business information, but the unfortunate reality is that students typically lose access to university subscription databases upon commencement. Without adequate training on reliable alternatives, new graduates can find themselves struggling to resolve their information needs as they transition into the business workplace.

To address this issue, the Business Librarian at Butler University Libraries created a Business Research Workshop (BRW) to teach students about open and public access resources for business information. What began a few years ago as a trial offering for five …

Likelihood Of Soil Health Management Systems Users To Adopt Other Conservation Practices In The Big Pine Creek Watershed, Emma Wade Jul 2019

Likelihood Of Soil Health Management Systems Users To Adopt Other Conservation Practices In The Big Pine Creek Watershed, Emma Wade

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

Since the 1970s, the hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico has been growing due to fertilizer runoff and soil degradation. The hypoxic zone negatively impacts the productivity of aquatic ecosystems and threatens industries that rely on coastal areas. Soil Health Management Systems (SHMS) include farming practices that reduce nutrient runoff and downstream pollution. Farming practices impact downstream waterways, so it is important to understand what influences the adoption of conservation practices such as SHMS. A survey was developed to collect farmland owner/operator demographic information and to determine whether they adopt conservation practices. Five conservation practices were evaluated: SHMS, nutrient …

Expression Of A Copper Transporter Adp-Ribosylation Factor-1 (Arf1) In The Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier, Sai Dwibhashyam Jul 2019

Expression Of A Copper Transporter Adp-Ribosylation Factor-1 (Arf1) In The Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier, Sai Dwibhashyam

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (Arf1) is a GTP binding protein that functions as a secondary messenger in cell signaling to maintain the Golgi architecture for vesicular trafficking. Copper (Cu) is an essential element indispensable for a variety of cellular enzymatic reactions, and its homeostasis is tightly regulated by Cu-transporting ATPases (Cu-ATPases), i.e., ATP7A and ATP7B. Evidence from this lab and others has established that elevated intracellular Cu levels prompt the translocation of ATP7A from the trans-Golgi network (TGN) towards the plasma membrane to facilitate the efflux of Cu. Moreover, literature data suggest that Arf1 is involved in Cu intracellular trafficking. The …

Uncovering The True Diversity Of Chanterelle Mushrooms In Indiana, Jairus Chittenden Jul 2019

Uncovering The True Diversity Of Chanterelle Mushrooms In Indiana, Jairus Chittenden

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

Chanterelles are some of the most popular wild mushrooms in Indiana and throughout the Midwest. These attractive orange and yellow fungi are a natural delicacy, and the global trade in chanterelles exceeds $1 billion per year. Like so many other clades of fungi, only a fraction of the chanterelles’ true diversity in North America is known to science. Given their economic and ecological value, I believe that chanterelles deserve a phylogenetic analysis using the full capabilities of modern DNA sequencing technology. This project will determine how many species of chanterelles there are within Indiana and how they are related to …
