The Effects of Virtual Reality in the Treatment of Stroke Patients
Stroke patients face many challenges on their road to recovery. Patients may lose motor function, speech abilities, and other important cognitive functions. They go through various forms of therapy to help rehabilitate them and improve their cognition, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Physical therapy helps improve motor function and muscle control, occupational therapy improves those skills needed for success in work and life, and speech therapy helps patients recover the ability to speak and the cognitive processes to think and form words and sentences. While these therapies are …

Physician Burnout: Risk Factors, Consequences, & Prevention, Ianna Checo
Capstone Showcase
Burnout, defined as physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion from one’s job or career, is a consequence of increasing job stress without a comparable increase in job satisfaction. Studies show that most physicians have either experienced burnout themselves or have known other physicians who have suffered from this phenomenon presently or in the past. Burnout can be brought on by certain risk factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, workplace experiences, and personality traits. These risk factors can interact with each other or work on their own to form a dangerous burnout cocktail. If an afflicted physician does not seek the help they …

The Comparative Efficacy Of Amantadine Vs. Lcig Therapy For The Treatment Of Levodopa-Induced Dyskinesia In Patients With Advanced Parkinson's Disease, Katelynn Timony
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Though levodopa-carbidopa therapy remains the gold standard of Parkinson’s disease (PD) treatment to this day, patients often experience increased dyskinetic activity as a result of long-term treatment; known as levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID); the mechanism of which is not completely understood. In this review, the efficacy of two adjunct treatments for LID are compared: 1) the concomitant administration of amantadine, an antiviral medication with antidyskinetic properties; and 2) a new form of levodopa administration in the form of an intestinal gel delivered straight via a device much like an insulin pump.
Methods: Two systematic literature searches of primary, peer-reviewed articles …
"Your Enemy Is Anyone Who Opposes The Fourteen Words" Murdoch Murdoch: A Case Study In Presentations Of Threats To Ontological Security In Far Right Propaganda, Julian Morein
Capstone Showcase
Adapting the Ethnographic Discourse Analysis method developed by Stanton Wortham and Angela Reyes this thesis traces the language employed in the ethno-nationalist web series Murdoch Murdoch. While not as widely known as other examples of the burgeoning landscape of far-right internet content such as news sites like InfoWars or Brietbart, Murdoch Murdoch can still reveal crucial details about how far right propaganda seeks to radicalize its viewers. This thesis argues that Murdoch Murdoch uses its visual and discursive indexicals to present a near absolute dichotomy between a Positive Self that consists of white ethno-nationalism, and a Negative Other that …

Understanding Universal Coverage: An Overview Of Universal Health Care & Studies Of Real-World Implementations, Amanda Dombroski
Capstone Showcase
The purpose of this project is to dispel the confusion and misunderstandings surrounding universal health care coverage. To do this, I will identify the four models of universal health care identified by scholars - Beveridge, Bismarck, National Health Insurance, and Out-of-Pocket - and provided real-world examples of these health care systems in practice through analyses of health care in the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada. The Out-of-Pocket model is not analyzed in practice, given it does not allow for equal access for all to health care. Through the identification and evaluation of the four forms of universal health care coverage, I …

(Dis)Connectedness: How Modern Social Relationships Relate To Non-Suicidal Self Injury In Youths, Lauren Wightman
(Dis)Connectedness: How Modern Social Relationships Relate To Non-Suicidal Self Injury In Youths, Lauren Wightman
Capstone Showcase
Non-suicidal self injury (NSSI) is a maladaptive coping skill which involves harm to oneself without suicidal intent. This behavior is most commonly seen in those between twelve and eighteen years old. Research on NSSI in teenagers often focuses on its associations with mental illness, creating a dearth of knowledge regarding environmental factors. However, at this age, social relationships are especially important and can have critical effects on youth behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to understand what social relationships have associations with NSSI in youths. Reviewing the existing literature studying youth social relationships and self harm reveals six …

The Domino Effect: Intimate Partner Violence, Attachment, & Social Competence, Katelyn Ahern
Capstone Showcase
In this thesis I explored how exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) affects attachment to the mother and how attachment to the mother affects social competence in toddlers. I reviewed the literature to outline a mediational model of the concepts of exposure to IPV and social competence utilizing attachment as the mediator. Generally speaking, IPV exposure can lead to an insecure mother-child bond. An insecure attachment style can, in turn, impact the child’s social competence. A lack of social competence can affect the child for his/her entire lifespan. It is imperative that society begins to understand that a child does …
The Effect Of Whether The Viewing Of Healthy Foods In Advertisements Increases The Likelihood Of A Child Choosing Healthier Foods And Provide A Preventative Measure For Obesity, When Compared With Children Who View Unhealthy Food Advertisements, Rebecca Rochowiak
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Childhood obesity has become an increasing problem in the US over the last decade. The long term consequences of childhood obesity include numerous comorbid conditions, increased need for medication in a younger population, and decreased quality of life for those children and young adults. Advertisements including those on television and those on internet computer games contribute to this rising epidemic in their push for children to continue consuming unhealthy fast food and other fatty unhealthy snacks. Recently some companies have tried to combat this and have developed healthier advertisements to attempt to sway children towards healthier food choices. …

Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), defined as a chronic functional disorder that is characterized by recurring abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal disease in Western populations. While not yet completely understood, IBS has multiple factors believed to contribute to its pathophysiology. There are several treatment methods regarding non-pharmacological (such as lifestyle modifications) and pharmacological options (including anti-spasmodics, opioid agonists, and anti-depressants). Peppermint oil is a product derived from the natural herb, Mentha Piperita, and has been used as a nonpharmacological method to treat abdominal pain. Therefore, this review analyzes the use of …
Efficacy Of Interleukin-4 Receptor Monocloncal Antibody (Dupilumab) And Interleukin-4 Antagonist (Pitrakinra) In The Treatment Of Moderate-Severe Asthma, Jessica Ortega
Capstone Showcase
Patients with moderate-severe asthma are dependent on beta-agonists and inhaled corticosteroids for maintenance, and oral corticosteroids for acute exacerbations. New approaches to the treatment of moderate-severe asthma have emerged, including agents that target interleukin-4, a key player in the inflammatory pathway of asthma. These medicines include Dupilumab and Pitrakinra. This study found that dupilumab is effective in controlling asthma symptoms and was recently FDA approved for treatment of moderate-severe asthma in those 12 years old and older, but studies of pitrakinra have ceased.

In military veterans, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a common mental illness that many live with once they have been discharged from the armed services. Once the veterans return to their homes and start acclimating to civilian life, (PTSD) can cause disruption in their daily lives and mental health. Many of these patients are unable to receive treatment and care for their PTSD in person due to barriers such as their distance to a facility, a disability, etc. This research hopes to determine the efficacy and feasibility of alternative ways of providing access to care for these veterans without having …
The Efficacy Of Psilocybin Compared To Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors In The Treatment Of Adults With Major Depressive Disorder, Krista Worden
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a mental health disorder associated with depressed mood, anhedonia, fatigue, etc. and attributes to suicide rates. Currently, SSRIs are the first-line drug treatment for MDD. However, some individuals do not respond to those medications, have adverse effects, or cannot wait for their effects to peak. Due to these downsides of current medications or those with treatment-resistant depression, alternatives need to be considered. Psilocybin is a psychedelic drug found in certain mushrooms. Research on psilocybin began in the 1960s. Recently, researchers have conducted controlled experiments to see the potential benefits of psilocybin in various other …

Abstract
Introduction: Prostate cancer is the leading cancer affecting men of all races in the United States, and the second leading cause of cancer death in men. If caught early, many have had success in combating the disease, but if the cancer metastasizes, the 5-year survival rate drops to only 30%. Current treatment options heavily involve hormone therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. While these treatments can be effective for early stage prostate cancer, they can fall short in preventing the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body. This review analyzes a new potential way of preventing …

The Efficacy Of Aquablation In The Treatment Of Large Volume Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, Jessica Greenwood
Capstone Showcase
Introduction:
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is a condition affecting adult males causing symptoms including urinary frequency, incontinence, and urinary retention. While first line treatment methods include lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic therapies, many patients elect for surgical procedures for symptomatic relief. In patients with extremely large volume prostates the surgical method most commonly used has been an open prostatectomy, which is associated with both long-term efficacy and more surgical complications than minimally invasive techniques. Therefore, this review analyzes Aquablation (I) for symptom management (O) in patients diagnosed with BPH (P) compared to open prostatectomy (C).

This review analyzed the following question: In adults age 65 years old or older diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease (P), is nightly use of CPAP (I) more effective in reducing cognitive impairment symptoms (O) than standard pharmacotherapy options (C)? A literature search conducted through Google Scholar and PubMed granted six relevant articles that provided data for this review. No current studies compared CPAP treatment with pharmacotherapy, and each study used unique measures of cognitive function, making direct comparison of the two therapies difficult. Results demonstrated that first line pharmacotherapy can improve cognitive function, but only in limited way and only in …
Airway Management Techniques And Their Affect On Neurologically Intact Survival In Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrests, Trevor Thomas
Airway Management Techniques And Their Affect On Neurologically Intact Survival In Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrests, Trevor Thomas
Capstone Showcase
Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart begins beating in an uncontrolled, unsustainable fashion that does not allow for adequate circulation of blood to perfuse the brain or sustain life. One of the variables in OHCA is airway management. Many of the EMS protocols across the world put a heavy emphasis on endotracheal intubation as the mainstay of securing an airway. While a successful intubation is certainly the gold standard, it takes time and has a considerable failure rate in the pre-hospital environment.
This raises the question; In an adult patient who suffered an out of hospital cardiac arrest and who …
