Observing Waste Production And Bringing Sustainable Options To The Houses In Fraternity Circle, Lindsay Travers

Senior Honors Projects

In our ever-changing world, focusing on sustainability has become important due to human-caused climate change. As a result of our world changing and advancing, the majority of the population now moves at a fast pace. In some cases, this speed of living requires the easiest route possible when it comes to using resources or disposing of items. However, there have been many advancements that have given our world options to be more sustainable. In the 1970’s, recycling was introduced and groups ranging from large corporations to individual households began recycling items and reducing their overall waste production. This was a …

Year-long Analysis of the Water Quality of White Horn Brook

Sponsor: Thomas Boving (Geological Sciences)

Water is the foundation for all life on earth and is the most vital resource on this planet. Despite this, oceans and waterways all over the world are being polluted and exploited in ways detrimental to their fundamental hydrologic functions. For instance, excess nitrate levels can lead to eutrophication which gives rise to harmful algae blooms. Low pH can cause the breakdown of CaCO3 exoskeletons of organisms, such mollusks. High temperature variations are major stressors to living things and can cause …

Project Manager: Antibody Discovery At Distributed Bio, Pedro I. Justiniano

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Antibody discovery platforms have opened a new frontier in therapeutic development. Distributed Bio has built antibody libraries that produce computationally optimized antibodies pre-engineered with therapeutically desirable traits such as humanness, high CDRH3 diversity, thermostability, and other molecular scaffolding proven to pass clinical trial requirements. One of their most popular libraries is the Super Human 2.0 library. This library analyzes billions of antibodies to find the most suited antibody to bind to a specific antigen target. / As a Project Manager intern at Distributed Bio, I have been helping to manage projects of different companies to provide them with a product …

Iatrophobia: How It Impacts Health, Jessica Newbury

Senior Honors Projects

According to Mara Hollander (2019), iatrophobia is “the fear of doctors, medical care, or the medical care system." The most severe cases of this fear only affect a small percentage of the population; however, many people, for a variety of reasons, reported that they disliked or felt uncomfortable seeking medical care. An anonymous survey was created and distributed to males and females between the ages of 18 to 75 to retrieve self-reported data regarding specific questions about doctor's visits and the healthcare system. The total sample consisted of 379 participants who voluntarily completed the assessment. Quantitative data was collected using …

Conflict In Kashmir, Matthew Atkison '22, Sarah Oquendo '22, Manaal Shamsi '22

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

The topic we are discussing in our presentation is the controversy of Kashmir. Kashmir is a region that has recently been in a territorial dispute between India and Pakistan due to it being between the two nations and it having access to an abundant supply of resources. Kashmir has basically been blocked off by the rest of the world and because of this, many protests have sprung in the region, often violent ones with students throwing rocks at officers. Nothing has been done to solve the situation other than Pakistan and India pointing the blame to each other. Many have …

Kompost Solutions is an environmentally-centered business that focuses on turning food scraps into useful composting material that “subscribers” can personally use to garden. According to a USDA funded study, “American consumers waste about one pound of food per day”. In Sodexo, our school cafeteria, we were appalled by the mountain of food waste protruding from the trash can. Struck by the rampant food waste in our cafeteria and community, we knew we had to resolve this problem. Aligning with SDG goal 11 to promote sustainable cities and communities, we thought that it would be a great idea to return something …

Nearly 22 million school days are lost annually due to the common cold. Especially at such a high-pressure school such as IMSA, many kids ignore their symptoms of sickness and instead choose to stay in school. Instead of missing classes to recuperate, they attend class, spreading the sickness even farther. By having an effective and efficient way to educate children while they stay at home and recover from their ailments is one of the greatest steps education can take to develop its efficiency. With vidsEDU, students will be able to access recorded lessons by their teachers, whether the reason being …

Bees are a capstone species and the world’s most important animal as ranked by the Royal Geographic Society in London. They play a key role in the production of many food products which certain communities may depend on; however, their population has rapidly been declining as of lately. Hives is an organization which takes this issue into extreme consideration. We believe that habitat restoration efforts for bees is the strongest way to make an impact. We will work with numerous local gardens to install our artificial bee homes. These homes are created solely from recyclable materials. Not only are our …

The Low Salary Of Teachers Compared To Other Professions, Alan Nguyen '22, Axel Hernandez '22

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

Teachers have arguably one of the most important jobs in the world: to teach their students, i.e. the upcoming generation of kids, essential skills needed for the future. Yet ironically studies show that teachers have a drastically lower salary compared to other career choices. The National Education Association (NEA) determined that the average salary for a teacher has dropped about 4.5 percent over the past decade. For context, the highest average salary that teachers can make in America is in Washington, D.C., which is $55,209, according to the World Population Review. In comparison, a professional NFL player could make $510,000 …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

The relationship between China and Hong Kong has been very tense for years ever since Britain allowed Hong Kong to become for 50 years in 1997, before the region would have to officially return to China. Knowing that their 50 years of having a self-governing body will end in 2047, Hong Kong citizens are constantly afraid of their rights. Now to add to the tension, China attempted to pass the Extradition Bill, which would have any citizen of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau who has committed a crime, be tried in China instead of where they live. This created an uproar …

The Benefits Of Cell Phone Disinfection In The Nicu, Olivia Lyon Apr 2020

The Benefits Of Cell Phone Disinfection In The Nicu, Olivia Lyon

Academic Festival

Cell phone use in the NICU setting is a valuable tool and resource in the care of neonates. Despite the technology that is beneficial to the clinical setting, cell phones carry risks including the presence of pathogens on their surfaces. Studies demonstrate the presence of bacteria on cell phones, many of which are multi-drug resistant, presenting potentially harmful risks to the neonate. Currently, no policy exists for routine disinfection of cell phones in the clinical setting. Developing and implementing a disinfection practice recommendation focused on caregivers and families can reduce the unintended risks associated with the use of cell phones …

All work facilities and organizations need to implement mental health resources for their employees. Millions across the country, especially first responders, suffer in silence everyday as they work to tend to the needs of others. There are many individuals who feel as if they can’t address the anxiety, stress, or depressive states they may be in due to what is expected of them in the workplace. Rather than addressing their own mental health needs, they bottle up their emotions, never receiving the proper treatment or guidance to get them through difficult times. As individuals continue to put their mental health …

September 21, 2019 marked the day that a 16 year old Swedish girl would help "fan the flame" on the already controversial topics of Climate Change, and environmental awareness in the United States of America. Greta Thunberg arrival in the U.S.A had shocked many Americans at how other countries view them in terms of how they take care of their environment. However her speech was not not the first nor the last time pollution had been brought before the eyes of the globe. For years, economists, politicians, and those of the general American populous had been rigorously debating the topic …
