Student Library Employment As A High-Impact Practice, Rick Stoddart
Student Library Employment As A High-Impact Practice, Rick Stoddart
High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries
Student employment in academic libraries mirrors many of the characteristics and positive aspects of high impact practices.
The University of Oregon Libraries is at the beginning stages of re-framing their library student employment experience as a high impact practice. Currently, the UO Libraries are having internal discussions, identifying student employment learning outcomes, and building relationships with campus stakeholders. Additionally, the UO Libraries is working with campus institutional research to pull datasets that may connect library student employment to broader student success metrics such as student retention.
This session will offer a broad outline of how library student employment is a …

Fostering Agency Through Peer-To-Peer Learning: Western Libraries’ Practicum In Integrated Academic Literacies, Emily Spracklin
High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries
This lightning talk will introduce attendees to Western Libraries’ Integrated Academic Literacies Practicum, a 1-credit course designed to help underserved students build agency over their learning and empower participation in academic discourse. Through a partnership with the Hacherl Research & Writing Studio, this course pairs students with peer mentors who provide long-term scaffolding in a variety of academic literacies, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and research. Students determine their learning goals at the beginning of the quarter (usually based on their coursework) and meet weekly with a peer mentor to practice and reflect on strategies for making progress towards those …

The Engaged Library: High-Impact Educational Practices In Academic Libraries, Joan Ruelle, Deandra Little
High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries
Keynote address:
High-impact educational practices (HIPs)—as identified by George Kuh and the Association of American Colleges & Universities (2008)—are widely recognized as activities that promote student engagement, student retention, and positive student learning outcomes. How these eleven practices are implemented may vary some, depending on institutional context and priorities, as well as on the learners themselves, but are all meant to create substantive activities that deepen student learning, engagement, and success. A persistent struggle for libraries has been articulating how libraries directly and indirectly contribute to student success, and calls to better measure and articulate the contributions of libraries to …

Addressing Research Ethics By Adapting Citation Management Software In Research Projects, Eunkyung Lee
Addressing Research Ethics By Adapting Citation Management Software In Research Projects, Eunkyung Lee
Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
It was quite surprising that only a few undergraduate upper-level students were using citation management software on their research paper. It was more surprising that they were not aware that a lack of proper citations or cutting and pasting from other sources could be considered plagiarism in academic writings. They showed a significant reliance on direct quotations to avoid plagiarism. Cumbersome of manually adding citations in-text could be one of the reasons why undergraduate students omit referencing appropriate sources in-text as well as in the bibliography. EndNote is one of the citation management tools available for free to all current …

Stewarding Relationships And Resources: A Christian Perspective On Working With Vendors, Andrea Abernathy
Faculty Publications - George Fox University Library
The environment in which we acquire electronic resources is drastically changed, but our mandate to meet the informational needs of our students and faculty remains. We approach vendors from a point of need, with strained budgets, additional institutional requirements for purchasing, and growing information needs. Negotiating the parameters of a renewal or a new acquisition requires content knowledge, interpersonal skills, time, strategy, and integrity. In this session, you will learn some practical strategies for obtaining both sustainable pricing, and flexible license agreements for your library through intentional stewardship of finances, and the relationship between you and the vendor. Success strategies …

Integrating Literacy And Literature Within Lgbtq+-Based Curricula, John H. Bickford
Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
I report how children’s and young adult non-fiction and fiction books (mis)represent lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally, pansexual (hereafter, LGBTQ+) themes and people. I have published research on LGBTQ+ representations within books for elementary children as well as for high school students. I have also explored patterns of book challenges (challenges are registered complaints that have the intent to ban the books) by parents and citizens resistant to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes and people within literature in schools and local libraries. I use separate examples for high school and elementary by integrating literacy tasks …

Intersectionality As A Framework To Develop Best Practices To Improve Access To Higher Education For Marginalized Groups, Danielle Bank, Manu Kaur, Pat Somers
Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
The Combahee River Collective (1986) may have been one of the first groups to describe the complex interrelationships among social influences that overlap, intersect, converge and combine to directly and indirectly affect the lives of individuals and the groups to which they belong. Later theorists and activists (Cooper, 2017; Crenshaw, 2006; Hooks, 1994) have elaborated on the nature of these social forces which include race, ethnicity, class, religion, gender, sexuality, ability status, national/citizenship status, age, and others. Examining the ways that these social forces limit or advance the life decisions and opportunities of individuals and their social groups sheds light …

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
Acosta, J., Chandra, A., & Madrigano, J. (2017) stated that “Resilience is defined as the capacity of any dynamic system to anticipate and adapt successfully to difficulties. Individual resilience is the process of, capacity for, or outcome of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.” The Seven streams of resilient behavior – community, competence, connections, commitment, communication, coordination, and consideration – act as a whole system response, as a practical theory that has the capacity to adapt and mold to changing data and shifting circumstances in the face of new technology according …

Career development is a life-long, continuous process with many complex factors and interplay. This is also reflected in what makes up the learner of today and the demands of the current pandemic on flexible learning styles and modes of delivery to prepare for success. An eclectic toolbox is needed to meet and adapt to one’s unique strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences via different modes of communication. A purposeful and enhanced focus on experiential learning strategies may be achieved by using pseudo-flipped career training and brain-based learning. Some tenets include emotional intelligence, cognitive behavior therapy, and stages of readiness which may …

Examining Systems To Support Students: A Holistic Approach To Support Students During Challenging Times, Jennifer Buchter, Cori More, Jennifer Stringfellow
Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
Economic disparities have long been an issue negatively impacting students in higher education. The current Covid pandemic has exaggerated these discrepancies, leading to negative educational and well-being outcomes. If not addressed, these stressors could become barriers to student achievement and degree completion. Students may find themselves responsible for financial responsibilities not only for themselves, but also for their family. They may lose financial support from their family in addition to being required to provide caregiving responsibilities. Changes in living arrangements further contribute to disparities in educational experiences and outcomes. In addition to these concrete needs, stressors such as isolation, changes …

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
In this time of great racial unrest in American society, many Black students and professionals on campus are experiencing significant psychological trauma which can include feelings of: sadness, anger, irritability, emotional disconnection, problems concentrating, and diminished motivation triggered by the murder of George Floyd. Subsequent national racialized events and tensions have only increased these reactions. Black students and black professionals may be reporting emotional and physical exhaustion, feelings of not feeling safe (physically and emotionally), and a lingering anger and hopelessness, which has significant consequences for academic and career success. This is one of the most important social justice issues …

Student motivation, metacognition and engagement are strong predictors of academic success in the undergraduate biology classroom. Implementation of diverse active learning strategies results in increased student engagement and improved student performance. Instructors direct students on behaviors aimed to promote self-reflection and self-efficacy towards academic success yet see varying follow-through from students. This research study assesses motivation in students in two separate but parallel, introductory biology courses required for majors. Students in one course, with traditionally high attrition and serving students from diverse majors, will be compared to a second with low historical attrition and serving a single pre-professional program at …

RIT Libraries implemented the LibGuides 2.0 CMS in August 2015, but patron interests change over the course of five years. How can I discover whether my guides are still capturing the interest of the students and faculty at RIT? Using some simple charting and statistical tools in Microsoft Excel, I was able to deduce patterns in usage for both my subject and non-subject guides. These usage trends have provided valuable information on what topics our library patrons are highly interested in learning, what topics are not as popular as they were five years ago, and what topics seem to generate …

Dismantling The Knowledgeopoly: An Open Research Future, K. M. Ehrig-Page
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
A library plays an integral part in the community because its doors are usually open to everyone, at least in non-pandemic times. However, access to education, to research or, more broadly, to knowledge is often siloed and hidden behind subscriptions so that knowledge monopolies start to grow. In “Dismantling the Knowledgeopoly: An Open Research Future”, and in celebration of October’s Open Access Week that promotes free, immediate access to peer reviewed scholarship, we will look at ways you can broaden the scope of Open Access and move towards Open Research.
The idea for this presentation arose through working in the …
