Impacts Of Stream Restoration On Ecosystem Function: Assessing The Removal Of Rattlesnake Dam, Samuel Brian Turner Apr 2021

Impacts Of Stream Restoration On Ecosystem Function: Assessing The Removal Of Rattlesnake Dam, Samuel Brian Turner

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Ecological restoration, the process of assisting in the restoration of degraded ecosystems, is a relatively new field focused on enhancing natural resources and improving ecosystems. Dam removal has gained recent attention as an effective approach to restoring river ecosystems. Current principles guiding restoration outline the need for a comprehensive assessment of ecological integrity to achieve maximum success. However, current dam removal monitoring focuses on structural and compositional components of aquatic systems while neglecting aspects of stream function. This project aims to assess components of stream function and composition on Rattlesnake Creek one year after dam removal. I will identify a …

Why Are Some People Expensive Walkers?, Madison Reichelt, Kania Smith, Brooklyn Cunningham, Jacob Deschamp

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The energy cost to the human body during walking with and without a load has been the focus of scientific study for over a century. Our lab previously studied this physiology in a large cohort of young adults, and found that over 1/3rd of the 233 individual measures exceeded literature based expectations by greater than 20%, compared to the three most accepted and current models. Here, we attempted to explain why some individuals can vary from expectation by up to 45%. Because the muscular contribution, and thus rates of ATP hydrolysis during walking are reduced by the effectiveness …

Curriculum-Based Interventions: A Systematic Review Of School-Based Slps' Service Delivery, Taylor Stoeger, Kaelyn Hanson Apr 2021

Curriculum-Based Interventions: A Systematic Review Of School-Based Slps' Service Delivery, Taylor Stoeger, Kaelyn Hanson

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide preventative and intervention services to students with a wide range of language and literacy delays and disorders. School-based SLPs are often a member of an interprofessional team -including classroom teachers and special service providers- to support students’ academic achievement. Over three decades ago, the conversation around curriculum-based language intervention (CBLI) began as a viable option to support children a) within their academic environment, b) using the material they are being presented in their classroom to c) increase carryover to all academic subjects for which students engage. However, the primarily service delivery model employed by school-based …

Inequality And The Dead: Historic Cemetery In Missoula And The Chinese People Left Behind, Emily Owens Apr 2021

Inequality And The Dead: Historic Cemetery In Missoula And The Chinese People Left Behind, Emily Owens

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Missoula grew rapidly over the past century and a half, with urban expansion quickly infringing on past “edges” of the city where burial grounds were rapidly replaced by residential development. The Cherry Street Cemetery in the Lower Rattlesnake neighborhood is one such place. While some of the graves at the Cherry Street Cemetery were reinterred to another cemetery in Missoula in advance of 20th-century urban growth, my research draws attention to the fact that not everyone was reinterred. As a result, burials left behind have been built over for over 100 years. As an Anthropology student focusing on …

Preparing Students Who Stutter For Postsecondary Employment: A Survey Of Slps In Montana, Neiman Alexis Snetzer Apr 2021

Preparing Students Who Stutter For Postsecondary Employment: A Survey Of Slps In Montana, Neiman Alexis Snetzer

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

People who stutter often experience adversity in the workplace in the form of discrimination, lower pay, and low self-esteem (Plexico et. al., 2019; Klein & Hood, 2004; Gerlach et. al., 2018). The goal of secondary schools is to prepare all students for life after graduation, including postsecondary education/training, independent living, and employment. Students with disabilities are aided in this process through the development and implementation of an Individualized Transition Plan (ITP; Individuals with Disabilities Act, 2004). To successfully develop postsecondary transition plans to improve employment outcomes for students who stutter (SWS), the difficulties they experience when preparing for, seeking, and …

Title: Youth Wilderness Therapy Intervention Outcomes: Case Study in Montana

Authors: Morgan Heimbigner, Cali Caughie, Phoebe Bean, Samantha Russell, Stuart Hall

Objective: Wilderness therapy is a model of treatment intervention which utilizes components of traditional therapy in combination with outdoor expeditionary principles. The current pilot project seeks to understand the role of executive function, attachment, resiliency, and hope in wilderness therapy treatment outcomes in a population of at-risk youth (13-17 years of age) taking part in the 5-week Inner Roads treatment program run out of Missoula, Montana. The study aims to gather data to better inform Inner Roads program development …

Caregivers of GBM Need Support from Family and Friends

Abstract

Purpose Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer, both to the patient and the caregiver of the patient. GBM has a dismal medical prognosis for patients that area diagnosed with it. Caregivers struggle to maintain appropriate care to their patients due to the high stress job and often rely on the help of family and friends. Previous studies suggest longer life expectancy in GBM patients correlates with better caregiver mastery. This study aims to find ways and ideas for family members and friends to offer …
