Effects Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Lvad Patients, Abigail French Apr 2024

Effects Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Lvad Patients, Abigail French

Academic Festival

LVADs are used to pump blood into the lower chambers of the heart and are placed in patients with heart failure (EF < 35%) who may not be eligible for a heart transplant. The patient’s blood pressure pre- and post-exercise were recorded, as well as during exercise after 10-15 minutes. An adaptational decrease in systolic blood pressure was the result of 24/36 sessions. There was more variation with pre-exercise heart rate, but post-exercise resting heart rate decreases with chronic aerobic exercise. Cardiac rehabilitation programs are designed to increase functional capacity and quality of life in those who suffer from various heart conditions over the course of 36 sessions (roughly within three months). Cardiac rehab programs implement cardio, weight training, and stretching, along with education on healthy living and heart health.

Effects Of Genetically Modified Organisms On Health, Kaitlyn Greenhill Apr 2024

Effects Of Genetically Modified Organisms On Health, Kaitlyn Greenhill

Academic Festival

Genetically Modifies Organisms have been used for decades to enhance and alter commercially produced crops. They are traditionally used to display herbicide, pesticide resistance, enhanced vitamin and nutrient content, and disease resistance. Genetic modifications could be the solution to global food scarcity by increasing crop yield and nutrient content of these crops. Many genetically modified crops are currently in experimental stages of use in pharmaceuticals and vaccines. Most genetically modified organisms demonstrate only positive effects, such as crops with enhanced nutrient content, but herbicide resistant crops can potentially have unintended effects and pesticide resistant crops show toxicity that is mostly …

The Future Potential Of Brain-Computer Interfaces In Medicine: Current Applications, Limitations, And Improvements, Kara Mcguire

Academic Festival

Brain-computer interfaces connect the brain to an outside computer system. A communication pathway is formed where thoughts are met with tangible feedback. There are three major types of BCI that are grouped by the brain activity being used: active BCI, Reactive BCI, and Passive BCI. BCIs can be invasive, partially invasive, or noninvasive. There are four main components to a BCI system: signal acquisition, feature extraction, feature translation, and device output. Currently, the majority of BCI application and research is focused on the biomedical field, but BCI technology shows economic promise in other industries. In experimental settings, BCI technology has …

Tiktok Data Puller, Graig Mcmenamin

Academic Festival

Tiktok’s research API allows users to send HTTP requests to TikTok and receive responses as JSON data. These HTTP requests can be tedious to write and send, as well as the response data being raw and unorganized. This project consists of a python program that works with Tiktok’s research API. It provides an easy to use interface that takes simple information about the data the user wants, and then generates and runs the HTTP requests. It then automatically downloads the JSON Response data cleaned up and ready to use for research.

Study Of Interface Charges Between In-Situ Grown Dielectric And Gan/Algan Hfet Structure By Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition, Muhammad Hassan Tahir, Nifat Jahan, Md Ghulam Zakir

Faculty Publications

The integration of an oxide layer in metal-oxide-semiconductor high electron mobility transistors (MOSHFETs) plays a crucial role in minimizing gate leakage current and enabling wider gate voltage swings. In this study, we present the fabrication and characterization of GaN/AlGaN heterostructure field-effect transistors (HFETs) capped with a Ga₂O₃ dielectric layer. The oxide was deposited via an in-situ process within a single MOCVD reactor without vacuum interruption. Our findings demonstrate that the in-situ capped HFETs exhibit a significantly lower interface charge density of 4 × 10¹² cm⁻² compared to 1 × 10¹³ cm⁻²·eV⁻¹ observed in ex-situ grown counterparts. These results highlight the …

Application Of Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization To Elucidate The Trade-Off Between The Solar Fraction And Cost Of Parabolic Trough Solar Industrial Process Heat With Thermal Energy Storage, Mario Ramos, Luke J. Venstrom, Jonathan Ogland-Hand Apr 2024

Application Of Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization To Elucidate The Trade-Off Between The Solar Fraction And Cost Of Parabolic Trough Solar Industrial Process Heat With Thermal Energy Storage, Mario Ramos, Luke J. Venstrom, Jonathan Ogland-Hand

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Decarbonizing process heat in the industrial and building sectors is the next frontier in the energy transition. With over 50% of industrial processes requiring process heat at temperatures below 300℃, parabolic trough concentrating solar collectors and other moderately concentrating solar systems hold out promise as technology to usher in a transition away from fossil-based heat sources. Prior studies consider two plant designs, one with a fixed size of the solar field without thermal energy storage and one with a larger solar field size with thermal energy storage fixed in size. In the present work, we demonstrate how to extend prior …

The Black Maternal Mortality Rate: Furthering The Discussion On The Deadly Symptomatic Reflections Of Structural Racism On Black Mothers And Analyzing State-Level Policies' Effectiveness In Lowering The Black Maternal Mortality Rate, Allison Howard Apr 2024

The Black Maternal Mortality Rate: Furthering The Discussion On The Deadly Symptomatic Reflections Of Structural Racism On Black Mothers And Analyzing State-Level Policies' Effectiveness In Lowering The Black Maternal Mortality Rate, Allison Howard

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

In the US, Black women are more likely to die during pregnancy when compared to their White counterparts. Black Maternal Mortality is not only a vast issue nationwide but a challenging one to solve. Previous research has identified structural racism as a primary factor in the Black Maternal Mortality Rate. This form of racism in the preconception, prenatal, and postpartum periods can turn into deadly symptoms that are problematic to the mother's health. Most existing research has developed from this root cause and turned to national-level policies as key to rectifying this problem. However, there has been little focus on …

Before The Dam Breaks: How Transparency In Negotiations Influence The Outcome Of Large Scale Hydroelectric Projects, Merrick Adams Apr 2024

Before The Dam Breaks: How Transparency In Negotiations Influence The Outcome Of Large Scale Hydroelectric Projects, Merrick Adams

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The negotiation phase of hydroelectric dam development is vital to ensuring a satisfying outcome for most people, but those who will be affected are often left out of this process, resulting in human rights violations and wasted resources. Organizations that attempt to moderate these negotiations and make them more equitable often fail to insulate themselves from the influence of private industries and governments, which results in policy outcomes that are highly unpopular. Given the increasing demand for hydroelectric power, it is clear that a more just and independent negotiation process is necessary to avoid human rights violations and improve efficiency. …

Applying The Stefan–Boltzmann Law To Filament, Damon Virgo Apr 2024

Applying The Stefan–Boltzmann Law To Filament, Damon Virgo

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Experimental physics is a branch of physics that conducts experiments and is concerned with data acquisition in order to study interesting phenomena. One of these observable phenomena is the Stefan–Boltzmann law, which describes how radiation from a blackbody is dependent on temperature to the fourth power, and is equal to power. An object is called a blackbody when it absorbs all electromagnetic energy that interacts with that object. Blackbody radiation is radiation that is emitted by an object when it is in thermal equilibrium and emits radiation along the continuous spectrum of wavelengths. With the Stefan–Boltzmann law in mind, a …

Modeling Close Binary Systems Within Planetary Nebulae, Lilly Blanton Apr 2024

Modeling Close Binary Systems Within Planetary Nebulae, Lilly Blanton

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Many fascinating and important processes in space occur in binary systems consisting of a white dwarf and a companion star in a very close orbit. Because of this, understanding this type of system is important to our overall understanding of our universe. These binary systems are born within planetary nebulae. However, only 26 such systems within planetary nebulae have been fully modeled, which isn't a large enough number to result in meaningful statistical data. In order to work towards increasing this number, I used the PHOEBE modeling software to obtain ranges for the secondary temperature, primary and secondary radii, secondary …

Modeling White Dwarf Binary Systems - A Hubble Space Telescope Project, Hunter Wood Apr 2024

Modeling White Dwarf Binary Systems - A Hubble Space Telescope Project, Hunter Wood

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

White dwarfs are the final stage of stellar evolution for most stars–those less than about eight times the mass of the Sun. In these cases the star has ejected its outer layers, leaving a superheated core behind to cool. White dwarfs that are part of a binary system, or have a companion star, lead to many interesting astrophysical situations, and so are important objects to understand. In this study, we look specifically at binary white dwarf systems where the second object is a main sequence star. After the discovery of a binary system, it is necessary to create a working …

Study Of Indium-Silicon Co-Doped Gallium Oxide For Effective N-Type Doping, Muhammad Hassan Tahir, Nifat Jahan, Md Ghulam Zakir

Faculty Publications

We present the research efforts to achieve effective n-type doping in gallium oxide (Ga2O3), an ultrawide bandgap semiconductor, grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The application of semiconductors for power electronics requires wide and ultrawide bandgap materials that can be doped to create higher electron (n-type) or hole (p-type) densities. Ga2O3, with a bandgap of 4.9 eV, is an emerging and promising material. The bandgap of Ga2O3 is much higher than other wide bandgap material that have been adopted by or in the process of adoption by the industry for power electronics. However, the doping of Ga2O3 has some …
