Nursing faculty are sometimes challenged when leading students to successful completion of nursing exams including the NCLEX. It is essential that faculty identify specific learning barriers for students who are challenged with nursing exams. Nursing faculty have reported various methods of remediation to enhance students’ readiness for taking nursing exams in preparation for the NCLEX. Although test review sessions, guided imagery, and assessments of learning styles are common strategies reported by faculty to provide remediation for students who are preparing for nursing exams, the literature reveals minimal evidence to support these strategies. Nursing faculty at IPFW have expanded on common …

Branching Out: Consolidating An Interlibrary Loan Department Across Multiple Campuses With Illiad, Ashley T. Hoffman, Rosemary Humphrey, Caralia Gallagher
Ashley T. Hoffman
Interlibrary Loan departments are no stranger to collaboration between campuses. Therefore, when the consolidation of the two institutions of Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University was announced, their respective interlibrary loan departments rose to the challenge with - if not enthusiasm - optimism and the willingness to try new ideas and strategies to merge the two units. This presentation will cover the alternatives considered, strategies chosen, and the implementation process undertaken to create a unified interlibrary loan department across two campuses and four libraries using Atlas' ILLiad software. We will cover not only policy decisions but workflow procedures …

Measuring Success: Research Online At The University Of Wollongong, Michael K. Organ
Michael Organ
With nearly 50,000 submissions and ten million downloads, University of Wollongong’s Research Online repository is one of the largest in the world and continues to grow. As such, it is considered an incredibly successful initiative--, but how does Michael measure success beyond number of objects and downloads? He’ll discuss how his goals and measures of success have changed over time, as well as some of his strategies for sharing successes across and beyond campus.

The model of assessment will demonstrate how to align the assessment of production activity with learning goals set by accrediting bodies, the institution, the department, and the specific program. This alignment insures that measurement of student learning is standardized across the students’ entire experience in the program (courses, performances, rehearsals, technical preparations, etc.) Examples of indirect and direct measurement instruments will be presented.

NOTE: A revised and updated version of this presentation was given at the 2014 United States Electronic Theses and Dissertations Association annual conference in Orlando FL in September 2014. Since 2008 EIU has been digitizing ETDs and making them available via the library catalog, I-Share (the state of IL consortia catalog), and WorldCat. It was only after ETDs were included in the institutional repository (The Keep) that the majority of faculty became fully aware of how accessible these theses had become. This dawning realization led to important conversations with faculty and other stakeholders about concerns regarding publishing, grant approval, and …

Since its creation in 2004, GIL Express has attempted to supplement traditional ILL services by providing a faster avenue for patrons to request and receive books. However, operating similar services from two different departments can lead to confusion for patrons and headaches for staff. For this project, we will analyze the methods employed by other schools in the USG system to improve the coordination of GIL Express and ILL services. We will present our findings as well as evaluate alternative solutions to streamline the process for both patrons and staff.

In the fall of 2012 Sturgis Library began investigating new collection development methods for serving the needs of students and faculty at Kennesaw State University (KSU), with the intent to enhance both collection and service excellence. One area targeted for improvement beginning in FY2013- 2014 was interlibrary loan service. With over 10,000 borrowing requests in FY 2011 -2012, Library Administration engaged the newly hired Collection Development Librarian and the ILL Paraprofessional to begin investigating and implementing a robust electronic book DDA (Demand Driven Acquisitions) program in conjunction with a PDA (Patron Driven Acquisitions) program. This presentation will highlight the process …

Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold

The university library can be reconceptualized as a powerful engine for open culture. A generative and regenerative center that naturally brings disciplines, cultures, and generations together, the university library can expand its role in open culture far beyond sharing institutionally-produced research and data through open repositories. Drawing on the experience of a public polytechnic university, this presentation documents the emergence of a university library as a system of open culture programs and as a place where a speeding culture can stop to dialogue, think, and create: generating collective interactive learning; fostering collaboration with open data; cultivating open conversations and learning …
