Western Libraries, an academic library with an FTE of 34,000, and Ingram Coutts, have worked together to implement an e-preferred Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program at Western Libraries. This implementation has required collaboration between Coutts and Western Libraries collection librarians to develop effective profiles. These profiles allow the PDA collection to be filtered according to subject and non-subject parameters. There are several aspects of this project that make it unique. First, every e-book that is selected by a PDA-preferred profile will automatically be loaded into the catalogue for PDA. Patrons will trigger a purchase if the book is accessed twice. …
Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews
Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews
Gordon A Crews
The purpose of this seminar is to acquaint participants with the ever-changing characteristics, often conflicting issues of causation, and various proposed solutions to the myriad of problems associated with gangs in schools. Special attention is given to the evolving nature of gangs in K-12 educational institutions (e.g., new types of juvenile groups developing and their associated behavior). Traditional subjects such as gang recruitment, initiation, and criminal activity are examined by discussing the many ways they manifest themselves in the school setting. Finally, a conceptual framework is presented by which a school can identify, understand, and begin to address a potential …
Juvenile Delinquency And Violence: Examining International Police And Societal Response, Gordon A. Crews, Angela West Crews
Juvenile Delinquency And Violence: Examining International Police And Societal Response, Gordon A. Crews, Angela West Crews
Angela Crews
This presentation comparatively examines relationships in the United States, Eastern and Central Europe, Scandinavia, and parts of the Middle East among juvenile violence, "heavy metal" music, substance abuse, and participation in occult and "alternative" youth groups (e.g., Wicca, Satanism, vampirism, Goth). We trace the movement of certain groups, behaviors, and preferences and make a correlation between some of these movements and an increase in youth violence and substance abuse. The authors use results from surveys and participant observations in the U.S., Copenhagen, Germany, the Netherlands, & the Middle East (Egypt & Turkey) that indicate, however, that mere participation in these …

Citizen And Officer Perceptions Of Community Policing In Ghana: Policing Of, By, And For The People, Or Just To The People?, Angela West Crews, Gordon A. Crews
Angela Crews
This presentation presents initial results of an evaluation of citizen and officer perceptions of policing in Ghana. The Ghana Police Service (GPS) is attempting to transition from a para-militaristic philosophy to a more community-centered approach, developing a domestic violence unit in the past decade and, more recently, a community policing unit. Community policing philosophies, however, face unique challenges in Ghanaian society, such as a deep-rooted (and historically well-founded) mistrust of the police, and a culture with a well-established and trusted “traditional” system wherein matters are settled within communities and impacted by religion, spirituality, and mysticism. This project used official reported …

Amplifying The Message About College And Career Readiness, Linda Knicely
Ohio College Access Network
This session takes an intentional look at how we bridge the divide between PD and reality and discusses innovative methods for delivering the college and career readiness message, including counselor- and teacher-taught CCR classes, counselor-access professional partnerships, and CCR promoted within an advisory model. Six panelists currently working in the field share their diverse perspectives. This Power Point presentation accompanied the breakout session by the same title at the 2012 OCAN Conference.

Transfer between state college/universities has changed drastically in the last ten years. The development of Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs) and Career Transfer Assurance Guides (CTAGs) pathways, Transfer Grading Policy, awarding of college credit for Advanced Placement Exams, and now the Articulation and Transfer Clearinghouse have changed the face of transfer in Ohio in ways that will be far-reaching in effect and will change the way we all send, accept, and apply transfer credits in Ohio. This presentation provided an update on new initiatives that have been or are planned for the near future and how they will affect higher education …

"Google is the most interesting institution in the world right now. It is working its way into our consciousness and daily lives at a remarkable rate that is unmatched by any company in human history. And it is doing so in a fairly novel way through the aggregation of our choices. We are choosing to use Google every day. We are not forced or seduced into using it" according to Siva Vaidhyanathan. This presentation may help you to be understood what Google is and how it dominates Internet. Happy reading

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Rescue Breathing Is Superior To Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation For Children And Infants: Results Of A Systematic Review, Joseph W. Rossano, Richard N. Bradley
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Rescue Breathing Is Superior To Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation For Children And Infants: Results Of A Systematic Review, Joseph W. Rossano, Richard N. Bradley
Richard N Bradley
Introduction
Evidence supports teaching hands-only CPR for the initial treatment of cardiac arrest in adults. Unlike adults, however, children and infants with cardiac arrest are more likely to have non-cardiac causes.
Hypothesis: The objective of this project was to conduct a structured literature review to answer the question, “In children and infants with cardiac arrest treated in an out-of-hospital setting, does compression-only CPR, alone or with supplemental oxygen, compared to CPR with rescue breathing lead to improved outcomes?”
Results
Sixty-nine records were identified and screened. Fifty-four of these did not meet inclusion/exclusion criteria, leaving fifteen full-text articles that we assessed …

Existing Research Is Inadequate For The Development Of Guidelines For The Basic Lifesupport Management Of Airway Obstruction In Adults: Results Of A Systematic Review, Richard N. Bradley, Joseph W. Rossano, Siobán Kennedy
Richard N Bradley
Introduction
There has been considerable controversy and several changes in guidelines for the basic life support (BLS) management of choking since the introduction of the Heimlich procedure in 1974.
Hypothesis: The objective of this project was to conduct a structured literature review to answer the question, “For adults, either conscious or unconscious, with obstructed airway, does any specific resuscitation techniques compared to currently recommended techniques, lead to different outcomes?”
Results
We identified 475 records after duplicates were removed; we screened all of these and excluded 454. This left 22 full-text articles which we assessed for eligibility; we excluded 19 of …

Using Technology And Online Counseling: The Future Is Now, Oscar T. Mcknight, Gregory Pollock, Kerri Carmichael
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
This research addresses how technology is transforming the world; specifically, how we live, communicate and interact. Two questions posed for counselors: first, should counselors avoid, minimize, maximize or embrace the online environment; and second, how does on-line counseling fit within the profession. In addition, reviewed are professional standards, certifications and in-practice issues. Findings suggest that counselors should embrace new technologies and assess best-practice protocols.
