A great deal is said about ethics in adoption. However, the term remains vague, undefined, and subjective with suggested, but no firm or enforced guidelines enacted to police the adoption industry and protect the families and individuals whose lives they irrevocably change. This presentation focuses on the inequities of adoption fees particularly in terms of providing legal counsel to the mothers relinquishing.

Current integrated library systems traditionally combine both user discovery and inventory management applications, merging very different functional needs into a single environment. As libraries look to the future, our service platforms must evolve in a way that enables both more efficient management and more effective presentation of a wide array of library resources. For many libraries, the first step in the process has been to decouple the user discovery and delivery environment, separating the needs for patron presentation from the requirements for back-office management. In this way, libraries have attempted to improve the enduser experience.
This presentation examines how new …

Lives, Images, Audiences, Intentions: Participatory Visual Anthropology In A Hungarian Romani Neighborhood, Krista Harper
Krista M. Harper
Participatory visual methodologies open up new possibilities for community collaboration in the research process, appeal to diverse audiences, and produce rich visual and narrative data guided by participant interests and priorities. Presenting a recent research collaboration with a grassroots Romani (Gypsy) community organization in northern Hungary, I discuss ethical and epistemological questions raised in participatory visual research. In this project, our team used the PhotoVoice method to generate knowledge and documentation related to environment, health, and the lived experiences of social exclusion. I explore power relationships in the research process as well as historical and contemporary issues of documentary photography …
"I Thought That I Knew Gender Oppression": Exploring Cisgender Privilege In Social Work Education, Kristie Seelman, Sarah Nickels
"I Thought That I Knew Gender Oppression": Exploring Cisgender Privilege In Social Work Education, Kristie Seelman, Sarah Nickels
Kristie L Seelman
Research (Erich et al., 2007; Logie, Bridge, & Bridge, 2007) indicates that social work education fails to adequately include content on the transgender population in the curriculum. Even when content on gender identity and expression is included in social work courses, the primary focus is on the oppression of transgender people rather than the ways that non-transgender people benefit from cisgender privilege. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study is to inform social work educators about the experiences of social work students who have explored and challenged their own cisgender privilege. We recruited a purposive sample of six MSW students …

Recently, Boise State’s academic leadership began exploring betters ways to disseminate the research produced by the university. As a part of this process, the idea of creating a research distribution strategy began to be outlined. One of the first components of this strategy was the development of ScholarWorks, an open access institutional repository. ScholarWorks consists of five key services: *Identifying and making available via the ScholarWorks web site documents and files produced by the faculty, research groups, and students of Boise State University. *Creation of Selected Works pages which highlight the scholarly accomplishments of each individual faculty member. *Distribution of …

Wondering how to get your CONTENTdm resources featured more in Google, OAIster, and other web crawlers and harvesters? The Mountain West Digital Library regularly harvests nine CONTENTdm repositories in Utah and Nevada, along with two other Open Archives Initiatives (OAI) repositories. The result is a central regional index with over 270,000 records representing 1.2 million digital files, accessible via search and browse in an online portal at http://mwdl.org. Members of the MWDL's Best Practices and Standards Working Group are revising and expanding recommendations for assigning metadata in CONTENTdm collections to optimize their discovery in MWDL, as well as other crawlers …

Threats In Latin American And Caribbean Countries: #11;How Do Inequality And The Asymmetries Of Rules Affect Tax Morale?, Maximo Rossi, Juan Pablo Pagano, Natalia Melgar, Mariana Gerstenblüth
Maximo Rossi
Latin America is well known as the most inequitable region. As it is recognized, inequality and corruption perception weaken the way that political institutions works and the democratic system. Focusing on Latin American and Caribbean countries, we analyze what are the elements that shape tax morale. In particular, we analyze how the context influences on ethic decisions such as the predisposition to pay taxes. Our data source is the survey carried out in 2005 by Latinobarometro. In particular, our objective is to analyze how country performance is determining tax morale. To do so, we estimated four probit models including Gini …
