Peruvian Pinniped Teeth Trace Element Data-Tracking Ecosystem Variabilites Through Trace Element Record Found In Peruvian Pinniped Dentin, Dimitrios Giarikos, Amy Hirons, Ally E. Sheehan, Radleigh Santos

SECLER Data

The South American sea lion (Otaria byronia; SASL) and the Peruvian fur seal (Arctocephalus australis; PFS) are apex predators within the Humboldt Current ecosystem, where population dynamics respond to both natural variability and anthropogenic pressures, including El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and coastal mining. This study quantified 18 trace elements (TEs) in canine dentin from both species collected at Punta San Juan, Peru using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to evaluate long-term environmental exposure. Because dentin is deposited incrementally, it preserves a chronological chemical archive reflecting ontogenetic shifts in diet and habitat use. Overall, TE concentrations were broadly similar …

Dataset For Equity And Justice In Water Pricing And The Effects On Water Distribution System, Brian Barkdoll Mar 2026

Dataset For Equity And Justice In Water Pricing And The Effects On Water Distribution System, Brian Barkdoll

Michigan Tech Research Data

“Equity and Justice in Water Pricing and the Effects on Water Distribution System Management” Equity and justice regarding access to potable drinking water are paramount. Municipal Water Distribution Systems supply potable water to users and are essential to public health. They comprise a complicated set of source(s), pump(s), tank(s), and pipes. The price of water to users can affect the amount of usage. To find the optimal price of water to maximize utility revenue and allow changes to the system components for capital and maintenance expenditures, network modeling using the network solver fixed was performed for 15 real MDWSs.  A …

Pre- And Post-Coppice Production And Biomass Chemistry Of Eastern Cottonwood And Hybrid Poplars In The Southeastern Us, Heidi Renninger Feb 2026

Pre- And Post-Coppice Production And Biomass Chemistry Of Eastern Cottonwood And Hybrid Poplars In The Southeastern Us, Heidi Renninger

Research Data

Sustainably grown feedstocks for bioenergy and bioproducts are important tools to fight climate change, provide ecosystem services, and sequester carbon. Populus species including hybrid poplars have been utilized around the world, and in the southeastern US native eastern cottonwood (P. deltoides) is often favored due to its resistance to stem cankers. However, P. deltoides has historically been grown in single stem production and its relative performance in short rotation coppice production, prevalent in Europe, is not well documented. Therefore, this study’s goals were to evaluate eastern cottonwood and hybrid poplar productivity under a two-year establishment and two-year coppice …

Linking Local Ecological Knowledge And Management Perspectives On Oyster Predation In Mississippi And Alabama, Cynthia Lupton, Eric Sparks, Mark Woodrey, James M. Drymon, Nigel Temple, Steven Scyphers

Research Data

Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) provide critical ecosystem services, yet populations along the northern Gulf Coast are declining due to environmental stressors, such as water quality issues and predation. To evaluate how threats to oysters are perceived across stakeholder groups, we surveyed oyster Farmers and Resource professionals in Mississippi and Alabama about predator impacts, seasonal patterns, and mitigation strategies. Survey responses (n = 21) were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Fisher’s Exact tests, Mann–Whitney U tests, and t-tests. Farmers and Resource professionals identified multiple predators as important sources of mortality, but their relative rankings differed across groups. Resource professionals consistently viewed southern …

The $5000 Campaign Contribution Cap: Americans’ Perceptions Of Trust And Corruption, Kelly Bergstrand, Cristopher T. Robertson Feb 2026

The $5000 Campaign Contribution Cap: Americans’ Perceptions Of Trust And Corruption, Kelly Bergstrand, Cristopher T. Robertson

Social Work Datasets-Archive

Recently, some states have passed laws to limit the size of campaign contributions, such as a voter-approved ballot measure in Maine targeting independent political action committees (e.g., super PACs). Few studies investigate super PAC reform, and our study is the first to test Maine's novel form of regulation. Additionally, we evaluate the appearance of quid pro quo corruption: a critical factor for campaign finance reform to survive legal challenges. To do so, we conducted two experimental studies with 1131 respondents. First, we examined whether the size of donations affected perceptions of political corruption. We find that larger donations, especially those …

Physical Changes Of Biomacromolecules Upon Covalent Surface Immobilization, Bianca Mercado Velez, Vaishali Sharma, Seth Kriz, Erico T. F. Freitas, Paul Goetsch, Caryn Heldt

Michigan Tech Research Data

Immobilization of large biomacromolecules is often required for analytical quantification and physicochemical characterization. However, immobilization can alter the structure and size of the particles being studied. Here, two exosomes (derived from HEK-293 and MDA-MB-231 cells) and three viral particles (suid herpesvirus 1, xenotropic murine leukemia virus, and porcine parvovirus) were immobilized to different covalent chemistries to understand how surface chemistry influences particle deformation during immobilization. The surface chemistries explored were: (i) NHS (N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide) and EDC (1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride), and (ii) poly-l-lysine (PLL) and glutaraldehyde (GA). Morphological changes in biomolecules following immobilization were quantified by measuring the height-to-diameter (H/D) ratios attained …

Species-Specific Manipulation Of Microbially-Derived Volatiles By Burying Beetle Parents, Stephen T. Trumbo Jan 2026

Species-Specific Manipulation Of Microbially-Derived Volatiles By Burying Beetle Parents, Stephen T. Trumbo

EEB Articles

1. Hosts and microbes interact in dynamic relationships that can alter the volatile profile emitted by the microbial community. The extent to which closely related species diverge in these relationships is not well known.

2. Burying beetles associate with a rich microbial community that is present on their breeding resource, a small vertebrate carcass. Prior work demonstrated that Nicrophorus orbicollis manage the microbial community during parental care to alter the volatile profile emanating from the nest, reducing cues for competitors that would usurp the resource.

3. The present study extended this work to N. marginatus to first determine the distinctive …

Understanding Student E-Textbook Satisfaction And Learning Outcomes: Does The Instructor Still Matter?, Qinyu Liao, Edith Galy, Lin Zhang, Xiaodi Zhou

Datasets

Background: With the increasing cost of textbooks and new generations of technology savvy students, universities and textbook publishers are promoting e-Textbooks as a more accessible and affordable alternative. Studies comparing adoption, preference, and learning effectiveness of print books and e-Textbooks provide conflicting results. There are a few research studies focused on student e-Textbook learning outcomes but no empirical studies have included the instructor as a factor.

Methods: This study proposes a holistic model to investigate the antecedents of college student e-Textbook satisfaction and learning outcomes. A survey of 261 college students investigating factors related to students, e-Textbook, and …
