Assessing The Ecological Risk Of Heavy Metal Sediment Contamination From Port Everglades Florida, Dimitri G. Giarikos, Laura White, Amy C. Hirons

Port sediments are often contaminated with metals and organic compounds from anthropogenic sources. Port dredging can remobilize contaminated sediments, resulting in harmful impacts to the benthic community. Twelve sediment cores were collected from four Port Everglades, Florida sites and a control site; surface sediment was collected at two nearby coral reef sites. Sediment cores, sampled every 5 cm, were quantified for 14 heavy metals using induced coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Geo-accumulation index shows moderate-to-strong contamination of As and Mo in port sediments, and potential ecological risk indicates moderate-to-significantly high overall metal contamination. This study investigates the nexus between municipal water consumption and economic growth for El Paso, Texas. Located in the semi-arid southwestern United States, El Paso water consumption has been the subject of prior economic studies. However, the relationship between water consumption and economic growth has not been previously analyzed for El Paso or any other metropolitan economies in the region. Empirical results indicate that municipal water usage and real personal income are integrated of order one, but are not co-integrated. Given that, a vector autoregression model is estimated and a Granger causality test is performed. Estimation results show unidirectional causation …

Academic Librarian Burnout Dataset, Barbara Wood, Ana Guimaraes, Christina Holm, Sherrill Hayes, Kyle Brooks

Datasets

In the Spring of 2018, the authors administered the highly validated and reliable Copenhagen Burnout Inventory work-related sub-scale to 1,628 academic librarians employed within the United States. Academic librarians reported a total work-related burnout score of 49.6. Overall, female participants who were 35–44 years of age reported the highest levels of work-related burnout with males and older individuals reporting the lowest levels of work-related burnout. This study also revealed some interesting information about non-binary/third-gender librarians that suggests further research is warranted.

This excel workbook contains data from toxicokinetic studies of two pyrethroid resistant clades of Hyalella azteca (Mosher Slough & Escondido Creek) exposed to 14C-permethrin under varying temperature (18, 23 and 28°C) and salinity (0.2, 1.0 & 6.0 practical salinity units [psu]) conditions. Juvenile Mosher Slough & Escondido Creek H. azteca were exposed to ¹⁴C-permethrin at a nominal concentration of 400 ng/L for 36 hours at the aforementioned temperatures and salinities. Individuals were removed after 3, 6, 12, 16, 24 and 36 hours and analyzed for total permethrin and metabolites. The uptake, biotransformation and elimination of permethrin in the H. …

Comparative experimental study of species can provide insight into behavioral transitions in evolution. The insects offer many such examples for the analysis of parental care. We examined three species of Nicrophorus and two non-Nicrophorus silphid beetles for their ability to conceal a small carcass from competitors. We predicted that species with well-developed parental care would exhibit a heightened ability to conceal a resource from competitors, even when differences in burying behavior were experimentally eliminated. Carcasses were provided to male-female pairs in the laboratory for three days and then experimentally buried in the field, without parents, to assess discovery by …

“Food desert” refers to an area where citizens lack access to fresh, affordable, nutritious food. Food deserts are generally in low-income urban neighborhoods or rural towns and can be considered environmental or economic injustice. South Florida and Broward County have been documented as having a high food insecurity rate, indicative of households having difficulty putting food on the table. Given the high rate of food insecurity, it was hypothesized that a lack of access to food and the presence of socio-economic food deserts was at least partially responsible. The application of roadway deicing salts is increasing the salinity of freshwater systems. Increased salinization from salts, such as NaCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2, can have direct, negative impacts on freshwater organisms at concentrations found in nature. Yet, our understanding of how these salts can indirectly impact freshwater organisms by altering important ecological interactions, such as those between hosts and their parasites, is limited. Increases in temperature variability associated with climate change has critical implications for the phenology of wildlife across the globe. Indeed, there have been many examples of warmer winter temperatures (i.e. “false springs”) inducing forward shifts in breeding phenology. Earlier breeding can put wildlife at risk of freeze events during reproduction or vulnerable early life stages. Furthermore, in addition to temperature shifts, wildlife populations commonly encounter a wide diversity of other stressors (e.g. pollutants). As global change is predicted to increase both temperature variability and instances of pollutant contamination, understanding interactions between these stressors will become increasingly important. This excel workbook contains data from a study of trophic transfer of radiolabeled (C-14) permethrin from pyrethroid-resistant Hyalella azteca to a known predator, the Inland silverside Menidia beryllina. Fish were fed 15 dosed (~ 1 ng/animal) or control H. azteca for 14 days at three temperatures, 18, 23 and 28°C, and three salinities (6, 13 and 20 PSU) to simulate changes anticipated under global climate change (GCC). Following feeding, fish were analyzed for total permethrin concentrations, as well as percent parent compound as a a measure of biotransformation, were measured in both H. azteca and M. beryllina.
