Prior audiologic research suggests that the personality traits of cochlear implant (CI) users likely influences their rehabilitation. Research has primarily focused on the “Big Five” personality domains (Agreeableness, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Negative Emotionality, and Open-Mindedness) with limited information available on the underlying facets. The aim of this study was to better understand how personality domains and facets were related to CI user’s quality of life, barriers to CI use, and perceived hearing ability. The study, titled "Examining Differences in Performance Outcomes between Statistics Classes using High-coding vs. Low-coding Statistical Software Packages," explores the impact of utilizing different statistical software packages (R and SPSS) on student performance and motivation. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with alcohol abuse and higher ethanol sensitivity later in life. Currently, it is poorly understood how ethanol sensitivity changes with time after TBI and whether there are sex-dependent differences in the relationship between TBI and ethanol sensitivity. This study uses the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to investigate how TBI affects alcohol sensitivity and whether the effects are sex-specific. Our results indicate that flies have a significantly higher sensitivity to the intoxicating levels of ethanol during the acute phase post-TBI, regardless of sex. The increased ethanol sensitivity decreases as time progresses; however, females take longer …

Capture histories of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) identified using nuclear DNA markers from hair snare samples activated on the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge in Mississippi between 2021 and 2022. Hair snares were active for 8 weeks (occassions) with non-grain attractants placed at the center of each snare. Dat includes unique pig identifiers (Pig_ID), capture histories (Capture_Occassion), and associated capture year (Group).

Monthly catch of egg-bearing blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Trawl Survey are provided in a CSV file. Catch data is aggregated over all stations sampled per month for the Chesapeake Bay mainstem and James River from 1995 to 2019. Months are limited to February, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November. In the U.S. Midwest, where fertile soils with high water retention are prevalent, the installation of tile drainage networks have become a common practice to drain excess soil water, which enhances plant growth and increases crop productivity. However, tile drainage networks coupled with the use of inorganic fertilizers have significant implications on water quality, contributing to eutrophication, leading to harmful algal blooms, and resulting in hypoxic conditions in surface water bodies. To mitigate excess nutrient exports to surface water bodies, edge-of-field practices have been introduced. To be included in our database, the AI tool had to be useful for: 1) literature reviews, summaries, or writing, 2) data collection, analysis, or visualizations, or 3) research dissemination. In the database, we provide a name, description, and links to each of the AI tools that were current at the time of publication on September 29, 2023. With five years of funding from the National Science Foundation's Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program, John Carroll University (JCU) will provide scholarships to 32 students with demonstrated financial need and academic promise. The scholarships will be awarded to first-year and transfer students who are pursuing bachelor's degrees in STEM in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. The Scholars in the program will receive academic support that includes a STEM-specific orientation, a summer bridge program, cohort advising, and curricula introducing scientific thinking and research.

Randomized Comparison of Two Internet-Supported Methods of Natural Family Planning

The uses of cervical mucus and basal body temperature as indicators of return to fertility postpartum have resulted in high unintended pregnancy rates. In 2013, a study found that when women used urine hormone signs in a postpartum/breastfeeding protocol this resulted in fewer pregnancies. To improve the original protocol's effectiveness, three revisions were made: (1) women were to increase the number of days tested with the Clearblue Fertility Monitor, (2) an optional second luteinizing hormone test could be done in the evening, and (3) instructions were given to manage the beginning of the fertile window for the first six cycles …
