Young Healthy Adults With A Family History Of Hypertension Have Increased Microvascular Reactivity But Decreased Macrovascular Function, Evan L. Matthews, Peter A. Hosick Dr., John J. Guers
Research Data
OBJECTIVE: To determine if, like hypertensives, normotensive adults with a family history of hypertension (+FHH) display lower microvascular reactivity and conduit artery function than normotensive adults without a family history of hypertension (-FHH). METHODS: A forearm vascular occlusion test was performed on healthy normotensive adults while resting in the supine position. A near infrared spectroscopy sensor placed on the forearm measured skeletal muscle oxygen saturation kinetics to determine microvascular reactivity. Simultaneously, an ultrasound probe placed on the brachial artery above the occlusion cuff was used to assess flow mediated dilation; a test of macrovascular function. RESULTS: Twenty-two participants were included …

The project "Biodiversity and land use change in the British Isles" is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and is a collaboration between the University of Plymouth, the University of Birmingham and Historic England. The research is investigating the role of land use in influencing changing patterns of biodiversity using a long-term historic perspective. This will be achieved by: reconstructing human land use and subsistence patterns for Britain from plant macrofossil records from archaeological sites since the advent of agriculture 6000 years ago; reconstructing biodiversity patterns from palaeoentomological and fossil pollen records; examining the relationship between land use and patterns of …

Suitability Of Native Milkweed (Asclepias) Species Versus Cultivars For Supporting Monarch Butterflies And Bees In Urban Gardens [Research Data], Daniel A. Potter
Entomology Research Data
Public interest in ecological landscaping and gardening is fueling a robust market for native plants. Most plants available to consumers through the horticulture trade are cultivated forms that have been selected for modified flowers or foliage, compactness, or other ornamental characteristics. Depending on their traits, some native plant cultivars seem to support pollinators, specialist insect folivores, and insect-based vertebrate food webs as effectively as native plant species, whereas others do not. There is particular need for information on whether native cultivars can be as effective as true or “wild-type” native species for supporting specialist native insects of conservation concern. Herein …

- Metabolic costs associated with parasites should not be limited to established infections. Even during initial exposure to questing and attacking parasites, hosts can enact behavioural and physiological responses that could also incur metabolic costs. However, few studies have measured these costs directly. Hence, little is known about metabolic costs arising from parasite exposure.
- Further, no one has yet measured whether and how previous infection history modulates metabolic responses to parasite exposure.
- Here, using the California killifish (Fundulus parvipinnis) and its brain-infecting parasite (Euhaplorchis californiensis), we quantified how killifish metabolism, behaviour, and osmoregulatory phenotype changed upon acute …

Data Supporting The Paper “Greening The Grey Infrastructure: Green Adsorbent Media For Catch Basin Inserts To Remove Stormwater Pollutants”, Viravid Na Nagara, Dibyendu Sarkar, Kirk Barrett, Rupali Datta
Michigan Tech Research Data
Stormwater pollution is a major cause of water quality impairment. Much of the existing stormwater infrastructures provide little or no treatment, especially for dissolved pollutants. Due to the capital cost of installing new infrastructure, retrofitting existing grey infrastructures is a promising alternative to reduce stormwater pollution. In this study, aluminum-based drinking water treatment residuals (WTR), a byproduct from drinking water treatment was combined with other common supplies (sand and carbon material) and developed as adsorbent media for use in catch basin inserts to remove total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and dissolved Cu, Pb, and Zn from stormwater runoff. Hydraulic and treatment …

In recent times, cyberattacks on Internet of Health Things (IoHT) have continuously been growing, and so it is important to develop robust countermeasures. However, there is a lack of publicly available datasets reflecting cyberattacks on IoHT, mainly due to privacy concerns. To strengthen the cyber security of IoHT, we have developed the dataset, named ECU-IoHT, that is built upon an IoHT environment having different attacks performed that exploit various vulnerabilities. This dataset was designed to help the healthcare security community in analyzing attack behaviour and developing robust countermeasures. To the best of our knowledge, no other publicly available datasets have …

Research Study
Warming climate and resulting declines in seasonal snowpack have been associated with drought stress and tree mortality in seasonally snow-covered watersheds worldwide. Meanwhile, increasing forest density has further exacerbated drought stress due to intensified tree-tree competition. Using a uniquely detailed dataset of population-level forest growth (n=2495 sampled trees), we examined how inter-annual variability in growth relates to snow volume across a range of forest densities (e.g., competitive environments) in sites spanning a broad aridity gradient across the United States. Forest growth was positively related to snowpack in water-limited forests located at low latitude, and this relationship was intensified …
