Studies Of The Haematozoa Of Some Birds Of Northern California, Wayland Lee Ezell Jan 1963

Studies Of The Haematozoa Of Some Birds Of Northern California, Wayland Lee Ezell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the work leading to the writing of the thesis was two fold: (1) to survey birds of Northern California for hemoprotozoa of the genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, and Trypanosoma, and (2) to construct an up-to-date check-list of the Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, and Trypanosoma parasites of birds of North America.

Murine Circadian Susceptibility-Resistance Cycle To Acetylcholine, Frank Jones, Erhard Haus, Franz Halberg Jan 1963

Murine Circadian Susceptibility-Resistance Cycle To Acetylcholine, Frank Jones, Erhard Haus, Franz Halberg

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The detection of a circadian ( about 24- hour) susceptibility-resistance cycle to acetylcholine by spot checks on mortality from this agent will be here presented. The study was done under conditions standardized to some extent for 24-hour routine-synchronized circadian system analysis ( 1). Sampling was limited to only two time points along the 24-hour scale. Hence, results represent a spot check rather than a circadian map. The conclusions to be drawn from these data have been confirmed, in the interim, with more frequent sampling. The data to be reported constitute further evidence that circadian system structure (2) involves significant and …

Index Catalogue To Russian, Central And Eastern European, And Chinese Literature In Medical Entomology, Volume 1: Diptera, George Anastes

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

Over the past several years a large number of references from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and China have been collected dealing with arthropods of medical importance. These references were coded on keysort cards which made it possible to index as many as fifteen subject areas on one card. The usefulness of this indexing system was evident by the number of medical entomologists who used it in searching for references in their specialty. In response to requests from workers in the United States and other countries who did not have ready access to the index. it was decided to publish these …

A Comparative Study Of The Species Of The Genus Crotaphytus Holbrook (Iquanidae), Wilbur Gerald Robison Jr., Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The anterior musculature of C. wislizeni and C. collaris is described in detail and compared. Size and number relationships of the skull and its component bones, the sternum, the clavicle, the parts of the hyoid, the general body form, certain scales and teeth, and the eggs per clutch were determined for large samples of both species and then statistically compared. The general character of many structures is also compared and notes are made on C. reticulatus.

The differences encountered by this study, as well as the valid ones of those listed by Smith (1946:158–159) are not considered to be important …

Distribution Of Mice Populations In The Winona Area, Roger Flattum

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Six mice habitats in Winona County, Minnesota, were censused by means of snap traps. Examples of marsh, dry meadow, and woods habitat in an upland environment were selected in East Burns Valley south of Winona. Corresponding habitats in a flood plain -environment were located on Prairie Island northwest of the city. These are representative of the non-agricultural habitats of Winona County.

Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer Jan 1962

Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In his 1920 paper, L. H. Tiffany states that the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) offers for the game fish one of the most direct routes possible from manufacturer to consumer. In view of this conclusion, the research reported in this paper was undertaken for the purpose of determining (a) what foods are ingested by gizzard shad, and (b) if there is any correlation between food ingested and that available in greatest supply in the natural habitat. The study was centered in an area of the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Winona, Minnesota. Some additional work was done about thirty-five …

Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This investigation was part of a general study aimed at shedding light upon the role of the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) as a forage fish of certain game fish species. Recent changes in the populations of such game fish species as the walleye ( Stizastedion vitreum), northern pike ( Esox lucius) , and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in the upper Mississippi River suggest that the gizzard shad population might have an important bearing on the present situation. The purpose of this investigation was to study the growth rates of the gizzard shad in the Upper Mississippi River during their first …

The Life Cycle And Pathogenicity Of Eimeria Auburnensis, Wayne Norris Clark May 1961

The Life Cycle And Pathogenicity Of Eimeria Auburnensis, Wayne Norris Clark

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Coccidiosis in cattle is caused by microscopic one-celled sporozoa belonging to the order Coccidia and the genus Eimeria. Coccidiosis is a common disease of young calves that weakens or kills them, but the disease also occurs in older animals. Eleven species have been reported in cattle of the U.S.A.(Davis and Bowman, 1956). Of this number only two species, Eimeria bovis(Hammond et al., 1946) and Eimeria zurnii(Davis and Bowman, 1957) have been proven pathogenic for cattle, but except for Eimeria alabamensis(Davis et al., 1955) no experimental work has been done on other species.

Deviations In Serum Proteins Associated With Eimeria Bovis Infections In Calves And Some Related Immune Reactions, Paul R. Fitzgerald

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bovine coccidiosis is a serious threat to the economy of the cattle industry in the United States. In 1954 the United States Department of Agriculture reported that over $10,000,000 was lost annually as a result of mortality and morbidity in cattle due to this parasite (1). These losses alone amounted to more than one fourth of the total loss in cattle due to parasitism.

Campaniform Sensilla Patterns On The Wings Of Drosophila, Charles L. Hamrum, Arthur W. Glass, Vern Sisson Jan 1961

Campaniform Sensilla Patterns On The Wings Of Drosophila, Charles L. Hamrum, Arthur W. Glass, Vern Sisson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Campaniform sensilla have been described from the wings, mouthparts, legs, and other parts of the insect body. These small sense organs were known under several terms until Berlese ( 1909) applied the term "campaniformi" because of their dome, or bell-shaped character. Numerous functions have been suggested for these organs which seem to be stress receptors of some sort. Very few attempts have been made to utilize these sensilla as taxonomic characters.

Larval Trematodes Of Fresh-Water Snails Of Lake Itasca, Minnesota, Omer R. Larson Jan 1961

Larval Trematodes Of Fresh-Water Snails Of Lake Itasca, Minnesota, Omer R. Larson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine the cercariae present in nine species of aquatic snails of Lake Itasca, Minnesota. Although Cort (1914), and Faust (1917) initiated cercarial survey studies in North America, no comprehensive survey has been reported from Minnesota. Sporadic reports since 1928 have described the occurrence of twenty-two species of cercariae in our state. This report adds seven species to the known cercarial fauna of Minnesota.

Deer Studies At Camp Ripley, Minnesota, Bernard A. Fashingbauer Jan 1961

Deer Studies At Camp Ripley, Minnesota, Bernard A. Fashingbauer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The white-tailed deer has been studied by wildlife biologists throughout its range. Additional information is required for improved management of deer in Minnesota and elsewhere. With the permission and cooperation of military authorities, deer studies have been established within the seventy square mile Camp Ripley Military Reservation and State Game Refuge near Little Falls, Minnesota. The accessibility of the area, large deer population, and habitat conditions offered an excellent location for the proposed studies. In addition, the relatively complete control of hunter use of the Camp was a decided advantage in conducting big game research.
