Biosecurity Levels Of Livestock Enterprises In Turkey And Factors Affecting These Levels, Mehmet Feri̇t Can, Nuri̇ Altuğ, Ferhan Kaygisiz
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Biosecurity (BS) is a multidimensional preventive medicine approach that has health, technical, and financial aspects. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences of the BS scores belonging to the livestock enterprises depending on the geographical region and breeding types and to predict the socioeconomic factors having an impact over the BS level. The study was conducted with 517 breeders who live in 7 different regions of Turkey. The results have revealed that the enterprises performing "beef cattle fattening and dairy cattle breeding together" have higher BS scores than the enterprises in the other breeding category (P < 0.01). The differences between the technical and financial scores according to geographical regions were statistically significant (P < 0.01). The regions categorized as "wes" have the highest score and "south" have the lowest score. It was determined that as the "educational level of the breeder" and "enterprise scale" increased, the BS score significantly went up. The regression model was found significant as a whole (P < 0.01) and the independent variables explained the variation in the technical and financial BS scores to be 14.6% and 12.7%, respectively. Dissemination of education/training practices and increasing enterprise scales will positively affect the level of BS in the sector.

Tilapia tilapinevirus or tilapia lake virus (TiLV) is an emerging virus that poses a significant negative impact on farmed tilapia globally. Abnormal behaviours such as lethargy, loss of appetite, erratic swimming, stop schooling have been recorded during disease occurrence, which is possibly linked to brain activities. Previous studies described detection of the virus in multiple organs of infected fish; however, little is known about the in-depth localization of the virus in the central nervous system. Herein, we determined the distribution of TiLV and histopathological alterations in the entire brain of Nile tilapia experimentally infected fish. By in situ hybridization (ISH) …

A total of 10 adult fly specimens were included in the study. All flies were identified as female adults of E. tenax by morphologic characteristics under a stereomicroscope. The barcode region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) gene was amplified with PCR from the genomic DNA extracts of E. tenax specimens for molecular identification and phylogenetic analyses. There was no polymorphism among the CO1 sequences of all isolates leading to the detection of a …

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection in camel requires extensive research, particularly the immune responses in the intestine. This study aimed to investigate the nature of the cellular populations that are driven by the immunopathological responses in the camel intestine infected with MAP at different ages. Immunohistochemical staining was carried out on tissues obtained from naturally infected young (5-10 years old) and older (12-15 years old) camels. The staining of the tissues, ileum, mesenteric lymph node, jejunum, and supramammary lymph nodes, with anti-CD3$^{+}$, CD4$^{+}$, CD8$^{+}$, CD25$^{+}$, CD11c$^{+}$, CD14$^{+}$, WC1$^{+}$, CX3CR1, and Madcam-1 monoclonal antibodies revealed high expression of the molecules …

The purpose of this study is to investigate resistance to antibiotics of Staphylococcus species isolated from various samples belonging to different animal species. Among 48 Staphylococcus spp. strains, Staphylococcus intermedius was the most common species, followed by S. aureus, S. epidermidis, S. hyicus, S. saprophyticus. In a total of 48 Staphylococcus strains, the highest antibiotic resistance was observed to oxacillin (79.17%), tetracycline (39.58%), and ampicillin and cefoxitin (31.25%). Of 48 Staphylococcus strains, 42 showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent, while 23 of the strains had multidrug resistance. Antimicrobial resistance to tetracycline and ampicillin, erythromycin, streptomycin was detected frequently …

Stray cats survive on their own and scavenge the surrounding areas for food to survive. Their exploitation to investigate the prevalence of ectoparasites can be of great medical importance for humans as they harbour a variety of zoonotic pathogens. Therefore, a survey of ectoparasites on stray cats was carried out from November 2017 to March 2018 around the Town of Knowledge to determine the prevalence of ectoparasites in stray cats and their potential to threaten the public health by infesting stray cats around Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. A total of 150 individuals of stray cats have been examined for …

Improving the immune response is important for many reasons such as vaccine failure, immunosuppressive diseases, and antibiotics misuse. Research on materials likely to have immune-enhancing effects has been on the rise. Factors, substances, or compounds that can regulate different functions of the immune system can be used to enhance specific and even nonspecific responses to vaccines. Different amounts (0, 25, 50, and 100 μg) of Staphylococcus aureus extracellular products (SECP) were injected subcutaneously to different groups of chickens during the first vaccination against avian influenza (AI) and Newcastle disease (ND) viruses to investigate the effect of SECP on innate and …
