Key West And Salvage In 1850, John C. Hoyt Mar 2021

Key West And Salvage In 1850, John C. Hoyt

Florida Historical Quarterly

From the beginning there was wide difference of opinion and sharp controversy in regard to wrecking, the principal occupation of the people of a town which for a time was the largest in Florida. The nature of the business (for it came to be an extensive and well-regulated business) and human nature rendered any agreement between owner and salvor difficult if not impossible; hence, after 1828, every case was automatically taken before the district court which was established at Key West in that year almost wholly for the adjudication of these admiralty cases, and owners and masters of the wrecking …

Documents Relating To El Destino And Chemonie Plantations, Middle Florida, 1828-1868. Part Iii, Kathryn T. Abbey Mar 2021

Documents Relating To El Destino And Chemonie Plantations, Middle Florida, 1828-1868. Part Iii, Kathryn T. Abbey

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of the most interesting as well as the most elusive aspects of El Destino life was the mill plant. A few years after George Noble Jones came into possession of his Florida holdings, he undertook to establish his own mills. The facilities for the project were near at hand, for the plantation was heavily wooded and water-power was available from Burnt Mill Creek and the St. Marks River, both of which flowed through his property. By 1850 the enterprise had been started ; it consisted of a dam, of somewhat imposing size for its day and locality, and a …

Garden Of Ruins: Military Occupation And State Power In Civil War Louisiana, Johnathan Matthew Ward Mar 2021

Garden Of Ruins: Military Occupation And State Power In Civil War Louisiana, Johnathan Matthew Ward

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using Civil War Louisiana as its focus, I argue that military occupation and expansive state power during the US Civil War served the primary mechanisms by which national states fought the war, stabilized order, and shaped a postwar nation. While many histories of the war separate frontline combat from the domestic home front and distinguish between the policy decisions of high politics and everyday decisions on the ground, this dissertation connects the political decisions of war to the daily acts of governance and resistance in occupied Louisiana. Union occupation officials and Confederate state authorities made contingent decisions throughout the war …

Over The Edge: Suburban Planned Communities, The Second Frontier, And The Rise Of 80s High School Films, Daniel Mcclure Mar 2021

Over The Edge: Suburban Planned Communities, The Second Frontier, And The Rise Of 80s High School Films, Daniel Mcclure

Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference

While many 1980s youth-oriented films often sold various images of consumption, Over the Edge was one of the early prototypes of the genre, offering a more sober—a more 70s—outlook on youth attempting to find meaning and identity in a corporate-driven, materialistic space called American suburbia. Both a setting for paradise as well as an existential hell for the youth growing up amidst it, the film mobilizes the West and its frontier-like majesty haunting the characters’ space in the planned development of New Granada—a place where families are safe and entrepreneurs can thrive. Specters of the West haunt the film—from the …

The Seminole Council, October 23-25, 1834, T. Frederick Davis

Florida Historical Quarterly

The territory embraced within the state of Florida was not acquired by the United States through direct purchase from Spain. The treaty ceding this territory was drawn around a claim clause of this country and its citizens against the Spanish government for alleged damages for various reasons. The United States government agreed to cancel its claims and assume the payment of those of its citizens to an amount not exceeding five million dollars, in consideration of which Spain ceded Florida. The transfer of government was accomplished in July, 1821; whereupon General Andrew Jackson became provisional governor.

Documents Relating To El Destino And Chemonie Plantations, Middle Florida, 1828-1868. Part Ii, Kathryn T. Abbey

Florida Historical Quarterly

The second instalment of documents relating to the plantations of El Destino and Chemonie contains records of Chemonie during its first year as part of the Jones property. The estate was located some six miles north of El Destino in Leon County, and was purchased by Mary Savage Nuttall a few months before her marriage to George Noble Jones. The object of the purchase was to give employment to some eighty negroes whom the future Mrs. Jones had inherited from the estate of an uncle, William Savage. It is probable that not all of the group were placed on Chemonie, …

Jefferson County, Florida, 1827-1910, Part Ii, Samuel Pasco Mar 2021

Jefferson County, Florida, 1827-1910, Part Ii, Samuel Pasco

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Seminole War. - The treaty negotiated with the Florida tribes of Indians at Moultrie Creek, September 18, 1823, provided for their removal to a location on the peninsula designated in the treaty, but by an additional article some of the principal chiefs and their connections were allowed to remain in Middle Florida upon certain bodies of land granted to them for their use and occupation. The main body of the Indians removed to the district assigned to them during the winter of 1824. They had left their old homes and hunting grounds with great reluctance. They were not satisfied …

St. Francis Barracks, St. Augustine; The Franciscans In Florida, Charles H. Mohr O.S.B. Mar 2021

St. Francis Barracks, St. Augustine; The Franciscans In Florida, Charles H. Mohr O.S.B.

Florida Historical Quarterly

St. Francis Barracks, once the home of the sons of St. Francis, is perhaps the only religious edifice ever taken and used continuously by the United States for military purposes. This came about through the treaty made with Spain and not by an act of hostility against the Catholic Church. The Franciscans will probably never again take possession of their ancient home. Surely, though, some day-and may it be soon-there will be some place in Florida to which they will be called to renew the work so successfully and efficiently performed by their saintly and courageous predecessors.

Documents Relating To El Destino And Chemonie Plantations, Middle Florida, 1828-1868. Part I, Kathryn A. Abbey

Florida Historical Quarterly

This series of plantation documents will be continued through several numbers of the QUARTERLY. Taken singly, some of these may seem to be of slight interest and of no value to the recording of Florida’s history; but they have been selected to give a view of plantation life and conditions and practice from as many different directions as possible, and it is believed that together they picture at least an outline of what a typical Middle Florida plantation was before the War. Portions of the journals of the overseers, their letters to the owner, and extracts literatim from the other …
