Tequesta, 1946, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
Tequesta, The Journal of the Historical Association of Southern Florida, 1946 appeared while our last issue was in press. This is published annually by that Association and the University of Miami, as a bulletin of the University. The editor is Professor Charlton W. Tebeau, who is now the head of the history department of the University. This issue contains five articles and a “Historical Bibliography of South Florida” compiled by the Publication Committee, in which titles of more than sixty selected works are listed. These are mainly history and description, and for many titles there is a line or two …

Joseph Byrne Lockey, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
Very few natives of Florida have written of her history. This will not be true always, though fate has at times intervened-as in the case of Joseph B. Lockey who died on September 24 last, he having recently moved to Florida to write of his native state.
The Episode Of Osceola’S Wife, Kenneth W. Porter
The Episode Of Osceola’S Wife, Kenneth W. Porter
Florida Historical Quarterly
One of the best-known stories connected with the Seminole War is that the intense hostility of Osceola, the young Indian leader whose name is known in this relationship almost to the exclusion of all others, was in large measure due to the seizure and carrying away into bondage of his young wife, whose mother was a runaway slave. This story is commonly found not only in Florida guide-books and popular accounts of the Seminole Indians, but also in standard histories. It has come to be accepted as a fact requiring no special reference.
Florida In North Carolina Spanish Records, Part Ii, Albert C. Manucy
Florida In North Carolina Spanish Records, Part Ii, Albert C. Manucy
Florida Historical Quarterly
The North Carolina papers show intimately the operation of Spanish colonial government. Even more intimately, perhaps, they reveal its shortcomings through the media of complaints from one side or the other, residencias of the various regimes, and innumerable autos, memorials and testimonios. Complaints were to be expected, since politics and personalities were involved. Occasionally, however, there were bona fide instances of maladministration or criminal carelessness, such as the well-known cases of Rebolledo in 1657 and Sanchez in 1736.
Stephen Russell Mallory, Part Iii, Occie Clubbs
Stephen Russell Mallory, Part Iii, Occie Clubbs
Florida Historical Quarterly
While few of Stephen Mallory’s recorded speeches in the United States Senate are great oratorical efforts, most of them are replete with logic and some are eloquent. The reader today is especially impressed with his breadth of information and with the pertinancy of his arguments to the subject as well as often to the interests of his constituents. The savoire faire for which he was famous and of which Pensacolians, contemporaries of his, still speak, was never found wanting, even when debate became acrimonious or when an issue was decided contrary to his wishes. It must be recalled that he …
Locating The County Seat Of Jackson County, Dorothy Dodd
Locating The County Seat Of Jackson County, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
Jackson county, when established by the act of August 12, 1822, extended from the Choctawhatchee river to the Suwannee. Terms of court were directed to be held at “the Big Spring, on the Chipola," the present Blue Spring. When Gadsden county was created in 1823 from that portion of Jackson county lying east of the Apalachicola, the Legislative Council directed that courts for Jackson county be held “at the Big Spring on the Choctahatcha” until a county seat should be permanently established. The council further provided for the appointment, by the County Court, of three commissioners to select a permanent …

The Everglades Before Reclamation, J. E. Dovell

A Soldier’S View Of The Seminole War: Three Letters Of James B. Dallam, William D. Hoyt, Jr.
A Soldier’S View Of The Seminole War: Three Letters Of James B. Dallam, William D. Hoyt, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Three letters from James B. Dallam, a soldier in the United States Army engaged in the war with the Seminole Indians, provide an interesting view of conditions in Florida in 1838-39 and of the progress of operations there during a lull in the fighting. 1 Written from three different posts-Fort Harllee, Fort Clinch, and Tampa Bay-the epistles describe events over a period of six months and refer hopefully to the prospects of peace. Sandwiched between accounts of negotiations with the Indians are accounts of the country itself, with considerable praise for the healthy climate and fine soil, and also the …

W. D. Chipley, West Florida’S Mr. Railroad, Edmund C. Williamson
Florida Historical Quarterly
The man referred to was William Dudley Chipley of Pensacola, builder of the railroad from Pensacola to Chattahoochee and the Apalachicola river. Chipley was fast becoming one of the leading political figures in the state, and needless to say, he was on the other side of the fence both in local and state politics from the Pensacola Commercial which called him “Major Octopus.”

Florida History (1650-1750) In The Spanish Records Of North Carolina State Department Of Archives And History, Albert C. Manucy
Florida Historical Quarterly
When the pirate’s bullet lodged in Captain Arguelles’ leg one fine spring day (March 30, 1683), that painful detail was faithfully written down-not once, but several times and in several different ways. Consequently, although the brave captain was wounded almost three centuries ago, today’s historian can be certain the accident was not hearsay: it actually happened. He knows exactly where it took place, and when; and further, he has a good idea of how the whole affair came about.

Obituary: Thomas Frederick Davis, Florida Historical Society
Obituary: Thomas Frederick Davis, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
Thomas Frederick Davis died on October 17 last. For many years there have not been many of his days in which Florida history did not claim at least an hour or two. His research was a continual search for the truth, not an effort to write history as he wished it to be. Only when the evidence seemed indisputable did he suggest his conclusions; more often he spread the result of his research before the reader and left it for each one to draw his own conclusions.

Henry Morrison Flagler, S. Walter Martin
Henry Morrison Flagler, S. Walter Martin
Florida Historical Quarterly
The German Palatinate produced the ancestors of Henry Morrison Flagler, American oil magnate, railroad builder and developer. The Fleglers (as the name was then spelled) left the Palatinate in 1688 as a result of the devastating wars of Louis XIV, and went to Holland for safety. Among the family was one Zacharra Flegler, who strayed away from Holland to England, and worked for several years in Walworth as a carpenter, among other Palatines who had fled their native home. Life offered little in England as compared to the stories he had heard concerning America, so he left Walworth early in …
Captain Bunce’S Tampa Bay Fisheries, Dorothy Dodd
Captain Bunce’S Tampa Bay Fisheries, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The known facts about William Bunce can be stated briefly. He was a sea captain from Baltimore, who engaged in the mercantile business at Key West from August, 1824, until 1829. In 1832 he was listed as a customs inspector in the Key West District. 3 In the same year he commanded the small sloop Associate, out of Key West, in which George W. Murray, W. R. Hackley, and P. B. Prior visited Carlos bay and Charlotte Harbor to locate a site for a settlement on the Allagon Grant. Bunce’s activities on the coast of southwest Florida naturally made him …
