The Fatio Family: A Book Review, Walter C. Hartridge

This account of the Fatios and their descendants is a significant contribution to the regional history of our country, and it deserves to be viewed and evaluated against the background of historical writing relating to the southeast for the past century and a half.

Documents Describing The Second And Third Expeditions Of Lieutenant Diego Pena To Apalachee And Apalachicolo In 1717 And 1718, Mark F. Boyd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The success attained by Lieutenant Diego Pena in the discharge of the mission to Apalachee and Apalachicolo, to which he was assigned in the summer of 1716, made him the logical choice for similar duties in the following two years. The authorities in St. Augustine entertained the hope of repopulating Apalachee through inducements offered to surviving Apalacheans then living along the Apalachicolo (present-day Chattahoochee) river and elsewhere, as well as members of adjacent and related tribes, whose disillusionment with the English had produced the then recent Yamassee war. Knowledge that the success of this project was imperiled by the English, …
Foreign Travellers In Florida, 1900-1950, Lawrence S. Thompson
Foreign Travellers In Florida, 1900-1950, Lawrence S. Thompson
Florida Historical Quarterly
During the first half of the twentieth century more foreign writers visited the South than at any other period in history. Among the various Southern states the most popular among this group of visitors were Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia. In many instances Virginia was a sort of afterthought to the customary visit to Washington, but the other three states attracted foreigners primarily on account of their own colorful history and scenery. If New Orleans were to be placed in a separate category as a tourist attraction, Florida would outstrip Louisiana in this respect. Moreover, a large proportion of travellers …

St. Augustine During The Civil War, Omega G. East
Florida Historical Quarterly
Three days before Florida seceded from the Union about 125 state artillerymen marched resolutely on Fort Marion’s Federal garrison as ordered by Governor M. S. Perry. The action which resulted cannot be recorded as one of the major engagements of the war, if we are to believe Private J. Gardner (a member of the expedition), who reminisced: “We took possession of the fort, and captured the entire garrison, consisting of one lonely sergeant, well advanced in years, who surrendered very graciously.“

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Digital Projects Showcase Exhibitor During the summer of 2020, I worked on a project titled “A Prototype Online Archive of Documents Related to Indigenous Peoples in Colonial Spanish Florida.” This project focuses on creating a prototype online archive containing digital editions of primary source documents relating to interactions between Indigenous peoples and Spanish colonists during the eighteenth century in Florida. With the help of Dr. Clayton McCarl and Dr. Denise Bossy, I worked to edit five documents from eighteenth-century St. Augustine. The documents are letters sent from Florida to Spain, to inform the crown of colonial matters. They contain information …

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
In this presentation, six students will discuss digital editing projects they have carried out through the North Florida Editorial Workshop (NFEW). Five of the projects were carried out in the Summer 2020 course DIG3152 Introduction to Electronic Textual Editing, taught by Dr. Clayton McCarl of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Emilia Thom undertook the sixth project separately in fulfillment of her capstone requirement for the Hicks Honors College. We worked to edit and encode transcriptions of items from various archives, including UNF Special Collections, the St. Augustine Historical Society, and the PK Yonge Library in Gainesville. The goals …

Digital Projects Showcase Exhibitor During the Summer 2020 semester, I participated in the course DIG3152 Intro to Electronic Textual Editing, taught by Dr. Clayton McCarl of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, during which I worked to edit two letters from the 1840s by Jacksonville resident Elisa Hatch. I transcribed and encoded the documents using TEI-XML, and created the exhibit to explain them. In the Fall 2020 semester, with the assistance of a generous grant from the UNF Office of Undergraduate Research as well as support from Dr. McCarl, Susan Swiatosz, and Jennifer Bibb, I was able to conduct …
Dr. Roscoe Jennings: Influence On Students Then And Now, Mary Catherine Clatworthy
Dr. Roscoe Jennings: Influence On Students Then And Now, Mary Catherine Clatworthy
Theses and Dissertations
In 1833, Roscoe Greene Jennings was born in Leeds, Maine. Jennings would use his love of learning and teaching to help pay for college and medical school. After medical school Jennings became a doctor, Arkansan, surgeon, prisoner of war, and one of eight founders of the School of Medicine of Arkansas Industrial University, which is today UAMS. During his lifetime Dr. Jennings was a prominent Arkansas figure. Over the years his name has faded in Arkansas history. This biographical thesis project aims to show Dr. Jennings life through an online digital exhibit. The exhibit will be developed on WordPress and …

Settlers From Connecticut In Spanish Florida, 1808-1816, Robert E. Rutherford
Settlers From Connecticut In Spanish Florida, 1808-1816, Robert E. Rutherford
Florida Historical Quarterly
Ambrose Hull was one of the Protestant Americans who answered Spain’s call of 1788 for immigrants to settle and develop the Florida lands. Hull obtained a grant of 2,600 acres in the New Smyrna area early in 1801 and began building his settlement, as narrated in Part I in de last issue of this Quarterly. Unfortunately, his first attempt was cut short by an Indian raid in which he suffered damages amounting to several thousand dollars. Nevertheless, Ambrose and his wife, Abigail, with her sister, Stella Hall, soon began rebuilding.

Documents Concerning A Voyage To The Miami Region In 1793, Richard K. Murdoch
Florida Historical Quarterly
That the southern portion of the Florida peninsular possessed no significant commercial value in colonial days was generally conceded, but its strategic importance as guardian of the Bahama Channel was fully recognized. Governors of Florida, both English and Spanish, stressed the possible dangers if this region were permitted to fall prey to enemy occupation. In spite of the acknowledged importance of the area as a military outpost, no program was undertaken by the Spanish authorities to erect permanent military bases south of the fort of San Marcos in St. Augustine and the battery on the shore of Matanzas Island. Only …
The Pensacola Indian Trade, Peter A. Brannon
The Pensacola Indian Trade, Peter A. Brannon
Florida Historical Quarterly
Any account of the trade with the southern Indians out of Pensacola must of necessity be a historical recording of the contacts of Spanish (and British to an extent) West Florida with the Alabama Basin region to the north. The “Pensacola Trade Route” incidents make much of the romantic story of the early settlement of the Gulf country.

The Cowkeeper Dynasty Of The Seminole Nation, Kenneth W. Porter
The Cowkeeper Dynasty Of The Seminole Nation, Kenneth W. Porter
Florida Historical Quarterly
It is generally agreed that the sons - or possibly nephews, at any rate the immediate successors - of the Alachua chief, who it was suggested in a previous article was Cowkeeper rather than Secoffee, - that these sons were Payne and Bowlegs. Sprague is probably correct when he writes of the former, “Payne was of a different character from his father and not to be led astray and blinded by absurd revelations and traditions. Though a bold and intrepid warrior, he cared more for the happiness of his people than the indulgence of vicious passions, or the influences of …
