Two items relating to the Smith family of Warren County, Kentucky: a letter, 18 November 1852, from Amanda M. F. Withers, Dripping Spring, Edmonson County, Kentucky, to Sarah Hampton in Warren County; having recently moved, she describes her labors setting up housekeeping, gives regards to her friends and Sarah’s family, advises Sarah to be careful in choosing a husband, and asks to be sent some plant cuttings. Also, a codicil to the will of Sarah’s future father-in-law Daniel C. Smith, 1868.

A Note for Students and Teachers: This overview essay should be read before embarking on projects dealing with primary source material on Rhode Island in the Gag Rule. The essay, which includes digital primary and secondary source material in the footnotes for students and teachers, details the national debate over the abolitionist mailings and petitions in the mid-1830s in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Underground Iowans is a project undertaken by myself and two other undergraduate students (under Prof. Thomas Connors's guidance) to catalog the graves of notable people buried around the state. This geodatabase will be developed as an app allowing Iowans and tourists to locate the graves and learn more about those who contributed to Iowa's history. Individuals cataloged include political leaders, writers, actors, musicians, Medal of Honor recipients, and Tuskegee airmen, among many others. This free app identifies hundreds of mainly unknown historic sites found in every part of the state.

The Spanish-American War of 1898 ushered in an era of American rule over the Philippines that formally ended in 1946. An expansive colonial government developed with Americans filling most professional positions early on. There was a slow transition to Filipinos holding those positions, and this process can be seen in the field of librarianship. By the middle of 1924, library leadership and the teaching of library science was firmly in the hands of Filipinos. The University of Wisconsin and those associated with the institution, both Americans and Filipinos, played leading roles in the development of Philippine librarianship. This article explores …

Hay was a linchpin of the early industrial energy regime. It was the primary fodder for working horses, who became more rather than less important over the 1800s. Though largely ignored by historians, hay was of comparable value to cotton and wheat in the nineteenth-century United States. The crop’s historiographical invisibility is partly due to its relatively informal and decidedly subglobal production and exchange patterns. Whereas cotton and wheat exports passed through customhouses and institutionalized exchanges that carefully recorded trade volumes, hay was almost never exported and often underwent no market transaction at all, instead being used as an intermediate …

Two letters of Lida Calvert Obenchain (pen name “Eliza Calvert Hall”) Dallas, Texas, to “Max” and “Frances.” The first, dated 13 April 1932, thanks Max for a gift of lead pencils; the second, dated 19 July 1933, mentions the couple’s young son Kearney, gives family news, and mourns the effects of the Depression on the likelihood of publishing three books she has completed. She also recommends the reading of biography over fiction and lists her own recent reading.

The Chumash War remains an under-explored flashpoint in California history and the history of the Mission system of Alta California for myriad reasons, which include a lack of contemporary documentation relating the motivations of the Chumash as well as a broader silencing of indigenous voices in state and colonial Spanish and U.S. history. The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Perseverance Of Play: An Archaeological Analysis Of Residential Blocks With Preschools At The Amache National Historic Site, Megan Brown

The purpose of this project is to expand on the understanding of experiences of Japanese American children, specifically preschool-aged children, within the Amache National Historic Site, a WWII Japanese American internment facility located in Granada, Colorado. Through archaeological methods, GIS analysis, oral histories, and archival research, I analyzed the landscape and material culture of the five residential blocks within Amache that had designated preschools. I then compared these blocks with preschools to residential blocks without preschools to determine if there are any patterns and discernable differences between the two study areas.
