This presentation covers campaign finance information resources produced by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and Indiana Secretary of State. It describes how these agencies began, details how they oversee and regulate U.S. federal and Indiana state elections, and documents contributions made by individuals, organizations, political parties, and political action committees to individual candidates and organizations. Reporting documentation on these election races is also included.

Constructed in the 1960s and rebuilt in the 1980s, the I-490 Interchange situated east of Rochester, New York was a source of constant controversy by the motorists who used the freeway to journey from the suburbs where they lived to the downtown districts where they worked. This infamous interchange became known to Rochesterarians as “the Can of Worms” because of its winding ramps and narrow roads that would often leave those who traversed it confused and at the mercy of other drivers if they had not already experienced its design. This essay by Caleb Troy Horton provides a brief history of the Providence, Rhode Island, African American Community and their involvement in the Dorr Rebellion.

The essay recounts the actions of the Rhode Island Anti-Slavery Society, its members, and Rhode Island Black leaders—headquartered in Providence—during the conflict that ultimately, through their agency, granted Black men suffrage in the 1842 Rhode Island State Constitution (a.k.a. the Law and Order Constitution) enacted in May 1843.

This paper briefly explores a small section of the Gettysburg Community in 1955, and focuses on the residential and business related life of York Street. With the life and work of Walter Lane, a local photographer, providing the lens to explore York Street, the community of 1955 York Street is uniquely highlighted through a hypothetical “week in the life” of the photographer. Walt Lane was the only professional photographer in Gettysburg at the time and therefore would have interacted with a multitude of business and residents through his work. This essay is a case study of the experiences of Ethel Bird, a middle-class student at Beloit College at the turn of the twentieth century. Through an analysis of the first-person accounts of her college life, as reported in hundreds of letters sent to her parents, the essay will expand upon previous explorations of gender and postsecondary education to examine specifically the middle-class experience, as well as how this experience led to the entry of women into the workforce. This study examines the contrasting experiences and perspectives of enslaved African Americans in the South and free Black communities in the North in the years leading up to the American Civil War. Drawing on primary sources such as slave narratives, abolitionist writings, and speeches by Black leaders, the paper highlights how geographical, social, and legal contexts shaped their views on the impending conflict. While enslaved individuals feared the war’s potential for intensified oppression but harbored faint hopes for freedom, free Black Northerners viewed the war as both an opportunity for abolition and a risk to their precarious freedoms. Influenced by external events, major social movements, and the counterculture of the 1960s, Gettysburg College students increasingly demanded more out of their college. In the years 1963 and 1964, few students at Gettysburg College were interested in disrupting the status quo or questioning the college’s role as an authority figure. However, by 1968 and 1969, a growing number of Gettysburg College students demanded more of a voice in the college’s decision making process, fought to change unfair policies, and challenged the authority of the establishment. Some students began to organize demonstrations and protests in response to injustices they observed locally …

Different Perspectives In Early Twentieth-Century Utah: A Love Story Between Lewis Gillilan And Ellen Benson, Greer E. H. Garver

Lewis Gillilan and Ellen Benson were young adults who lived in Utah during the first decade of the twentieth century. Between the years 1909 and 1910 they engaged in a long-distance courtship, which ended in an elopement. In that period, they wrote many letters to each other which were full of details about what shaped their relationship. Such details ranged from romantic expressions to disagreements about religious beliefs. Their letters also frequently included references to their work and education, which tell a story of a state going through both agricultural, industrial, and social development. Life on Chambersburg Street in 1955 was centered around community and highlights what life in downtown Gettysburg had to offer in 1950's. This essay analyzes the daily interactions different age groups had with the businesses, churches, and individuals living on the south side of the street. In particular, Dr. Chester Crist, the Coroner for Adams County, was a central elected figure in the wider Gettysburg community; his essential work on road safety and Salk polio vaccinations was well known. His involvement in the life, death, and health of the residents is a major focus.

This thesis examines how African and Afro Creole men utilized the availability of and demand for forced and voluntary militia service under French, Spanish, and American governance as a mode of resistance to discrimination and repression within the social structures of the region. The influence and connections built through militia service were engaged to protect and preserve rights, customs, and opportunities for the Afro Creole community. This collection (cataloged on Bib #2888882) is comprised of items related to American industries, companies, and association/guilds, primarily from the 1940s to 1960s. These include short publications, pamphlets, reports, and product catalogs. The items originated with the Library’s vertical file, which was culled and the majority of items discarded in 2020. Items related to Alabama and items deemed of significant historical interest were retained and added to the Library’s Special Collections. The vertical file’s original contents date back to JSU’s time as a Normal School; it appears items were added up until at least the 1990s.

When the Nashville Christian Institute, an African-American church of Christ K-12 school, closed its doors in 1967, Lipscomb’s library inherited the school’s documents. In the spring of 2024, Beaman Library decided to publish these documents in our Carolyn Wilson Digital Collections. Before publishing them, we asked graduates of the school for help with identifying and labeling photos and other significant items. Thanks to the NCI community’s efforts, Beaman Library is now able to present a comprehensive online collection of photos, letters, board meeting minutes, and other documents that tell the history of the school at a pivotal moment in U.S. …

Blair Kelley's Black Folk: The Roots of the Black Working Class offers a comprehensive examination of the experiences of working-class African Americans from the Reconstruction era to contemporary times. The book challenges prevailing stereotypes associated with the working class, particularly the imagery that often excludes black Americans, and emphasizes their central role in labor movements and the quest for dignity in work. Through extensive historical research and personal narratives, Kelley highlights the struggles faced by newly emancipated African Americans, who encountered devaluation of their labor and systemic discrimination in the workforce. In 2023 the Virtual Learning Librarian at the University of North Florida’s (UNF) Thomas G. Carpenter Library approached the Head of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) with the idea to create a virtual reality (VR) experience using one of SCUA’s most accessed special collections: the Eartha M. M. White Collection. She was inspired by several existing VR experiences such as The Book of Distance and The People’s House: Inside the White House with Barack and Michelle Obama.
