The Evolution Of The Fleet Submarine In The United States Navy, Robert P. Kendall

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the evolution of the United States Navy fleet submarine from the T-class of 1916 through the Tench-class of 1943. The fleet submarine played a major role in the defeat of Japan in World War II by attacking enemy lines of communication and supply, vital to an island empire. The author reviews the trials and errors of submarine construction in the United States Navy. Each succeeding class of submarines is discussed in order to show the progress made, leading to the excellent weapon provided for submarine officers and men with which they destroyed Japanese merchantmen and warships. Although not well known to students of American history today, General John Armstrong was, in his day, a prominent and colorful public figure. From 1804 to 1810, he held the difficult position of United States Minister to France at a time when the world was in upheaval resulting from the Napoleonic Ware. As Great Britain and France struggled for supremacy, the United States--the world's foremost neutral commercial power--was slowly, but inevitably, drawn into this struggle, becoming the victim of the hostile edicts of the two major belligerents, as they wantonly violated established practices of international law.

The Civil War is, in many respects, one of the most tragic, yet fascinating periods of this nation's history. During the last one hundred years scholars have stud ied numerous aspects of this conflict in great detail. The subject of this thesis, however, has received meager attention. The focus of this study is the Provost Marshal's prison in Richmond, Virginia, called Eastern District Military Prison or, as it is more commonly known, Castle Thunder. World War I brought the military establishment in the form of bases and service personnel to Norfolk. Because of Norfolk's close proximity to the various military bases, recruiting for the various branches of the Armed Forces was carried on very diligently. Those Norfolkians who did not volunteer for one of the services, or were not drafted, were encouraged to join the Norfolk Home Guard.

To build the military bases and to work in the various government plants, thousands of workers were needed. This demand for laborers strained Norfolk's public transportation, health, and social services as well as housing accommodations and …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Three Spantsh missions, San Francisco Solano, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo, were established near the Rio Grande at present Guerrero, northeastern Coahuila, during the years 1700-1703. Remnants of at least 88 distinctively named Indian groups at various times came to live at one or more of these missions. In 1975- 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas San Antonio, supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Kathryn O'Connor Foundation, conducted archaeological excavations at two of these missions, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo. The burning buildings in this case are severely handicapped children, and the insurance company is the Lutheran Church in America's Board of Pensions.

Dr. Edwin Wang used this analogy to explain the LCA's decision, beginning in 1976, to deny health and pension plan coverage to children adopted by LCA professional church workers-if those children have pre-existing severe handicaps. Any severely handicapped person who wants to enter the ministry in the LCA would also be ineligible for health and pension coverage.

Since the United States Supreme Court's decision in In re Gault in 1967, in which due process rights were extended to juvenile delinquency proceedings which might result in commitment of youths to reformatory institutions, numerous courts, legislatures, and private study commissions have been re-examining the rights and obligations of young people in contemporary American society. In this ongoing debate over juvenile jurisprudence, perhaps no issue has provoked as much controversy as the question of whether juvenile courts should continue to exercise jurisdiction over juvenile "status offenses"--those unique forms of deviant behavior which are illegal only for minors. Confederate railroad policies had a disruptive effect on the final outcome of the war for the South. This thesis endeavors to examine the history of the construction of the Piedmont Railroad as it reflected Confederate railroad policy during the American Civil War. The work is devoted specifically to a study of the obstacles confronting the construction of the Piedmont Railroad from its inception to its completion.
