Recognizing Environmental Justice In History: Resistance And Agency In The Cross Bronx Expressway And The Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike, Sarah Berkley Jan 2011

Recognizing Environmental Justice In History: Resistance And Agency In The Cross Bronx Expressway And The Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike, Sarah Berkley

History Honors Papers

The term environmental justice did not become a part of academic discourse until the 1970s; however, the facts of environmental injustice predate the concept. Minority and low-income communities have historically born a disproportionate burden of the environmental harm associated with economic progress while reaping few of the benefits. The history of the building of the Cross Bronx Expressway from 1948 to 1972 and the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike of 1968 both involve what today can be labeled an environmental justice struggle in response to environmental injustices. Under the radar of the mainly white environmental movement, African Americans and others made …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In late 2005, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) contracted the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio (CAR-UTSA) to conduct significance testing at 41TV410 and 41TV540, two prehistoric archeological sites located in the floodplain of Onion Creek in southeast Austin in Travis County. The work was conducted in advance of a borrow pit excavation related to the construction on State Highway (SH) 130. The borrow pit represented a project specific location (PSL). PSLs are normally not part of the project per Federal Highway Administration policy. PSLs are the responsibility of the contractor in most …

Archeological Investigations At The Lang Pasture Site (41an38) In The Upper Neches River Basin Of East Texas, Timothy K. Perttula, David B. Kelley, Robert A. Ricklis

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archeological testing at the Lang Pasture site (41AN38) and nearby Site 41AN159, was carried out in 2004 by a team of archeologists from Coastal Environments, Inc. and Archeological & Environmental Consultants, LLC, working under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 3333. Based on these efforts, it was determined that the Lang Pasture site had considerable research potential, as it contained remains of prehistoric Caddo domestic habitation and associated burial features. 41AN159 was found to have been seriously disturbed by historic agricultural activities, and to thus have no significant research potential. Data recovery investigations were recommended for the Lang Pasture Site in anticipation …

Under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the University, CAS is authorized to determine whether proposed undertakings have the potential to negatively impact cultural resources, and if so, to recommend to the University …

The Master Of The Senate And The Presidential Hidden Hand: Eisenhower, Johnson, And Power Dynamics In The 1950s, Samuel J. Cooper-Wall

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In March of 2010, renowned architect Frank Gehry unveiled his design for a memorial to Dwight D. Eisenhower in Washington, D.C. Centered around an elaborate layout of stone blocks running along a city-block of Maryland Avenue is the featured aspect of Gehry‘s design: a narrative tapestry of scenes from Eisenhower‘s life. Over seven stories tall, the tapestry will impede the view of the building located directly behind it. That building is the Department of Education, named for Lyndon Johnson.1 Decades after two of the greatest political titans of the twentieth century had passed away, their legacies were still in competition. …

The American Imprint On Alberta Politics, Nelson Wiseman Jan 2011

The American Imprint On Alberta Politics, Nelson Wiseman

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Characteristics assigned to America's classical liberal ideology-rugged individualism, market capitalism, egalitarianism in the sense of equality of opportunity, and fierce hostility toward centralized federalism and socialismare particularly appropriate for fathoming Alberta's political culture. In this article, I contend that Alberta's early American settlers were pivotal in shaping Alberta's political culture and that Albertans have demonstrated a particular affinity for American political ideas and movements. Alberta came to resemble the liberal society in Tocqueville's Democracy in America: high status was accorded the selfmade man, laissez-faire defined the economic order, and a multiplicity of religious sects competed in the market for …

Ojibwe And Canis Lupus : Cultural, Historical, And Political Influences On Contemporary Wolf Management In The Great Lakes Region, Caitlin Williamson Jan 2011

Ojibwe And Canis Lupus : Cultural, Historical, And Political Influences On Contemporary Wolf Management In The Great Lakes Region, Caitlin Williamson

Lawrence University Honors Projects

My thesis examines the relationship between the Ojibwe and the gray wolf (Canis lupus) by examining the historical, cultural, and political contexts that have shaped how Ojibwe currently view the wolf. I compare this relationship with the contemporary management of the wolf by federal and state governments. I conclude that the relationship between the Ojibwe and the wolf is complex, and draws on the cultural significance of the wolf to the Ojibwe, yet is also impacted by other driving factors. The Ojibwe management of the wolf contrasts with state management, and thus, Ojibwe have the opportunity to provide differing management …

Jane Addams: Spirit In Action By Louise W. Knight, Mari Boor Tonn Jan 2011

Jane Addams: Spirit In Action By Louise W. Knight, Mari Boor Tonn

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The common temptation to perceive greatness as imprinted at birth, however, is skillfully disabused in Louise Knight’s meticulous, insightful, and often poignant biography, Jane Addams: Spirit in Action, which traces the complicated odyssey of a well-heeled idealist—initially conflicted by her material privilege, disappointed by gender-codes confining her ambitions, and haunted by familial ghosts and duties—into the pantheon of U.S. political idols. Of particular interest to rhetorical scholars, Knight weaves into Addams’s arresting tale her early baptism into public speaking, writings that shaped her expression in public forums, rhetorical strategies she employed, and platform failures as well as successes. A prolific speaker, …

The Drinking Age Debates, Joy Shana Newman Getnick Jan 2011

The Drinking Age Debates, Joy Shana Newman Getnick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In times when regulation, not prohibition, has prevailed, Americans have struggled to regulate youth and young adult alcohol use in a way that targets undesirable problem behaviors and future potential for severe abuse, while acknowledging the realities of youthful moderate drinking. Historically, changes in youth drinking laws reflected new adult understandings of youth alcohol use. These laws were a legislative manifestation of changing public opinion, and the perceived role that policy should play in promoting safe, intelligent drinking behavior.

Games That Will Pay: College Football And The Emergence Of The Modern South, Matthew Bailey Jan 2011

Games That Will Pay: College Football And The Emergence Of The Modern South, Matthew Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is often said the college football in the South is a religion. While it may be hyperbole to equate college football with religion, a visit to a southern campus on game day affirms that football is an important aspect of southern society. How did this happen? In other words, how did college football in the South become big-time? This dissertation seeks to answer that question. Focusing on the advent of football on campuses in the early 1890s until the construction of large capacity campus stadiums in the 1930s and 1940s, I argue that although football initially burst onto campuses …

Good Neighbors: Agents Of Change In The New Rural South, 1900 To 1940, Thomas Wayne Copeland Jan 2011

Good Neighbors: Agents Of Change In The New Rural South, 1900 To 1940, Thomas Wayne Copeland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work paints an intimate portrait of rural people who lived in the hill counties of northeast Mississippi and southwest Arkansas between 1900 and 1940. Howard County, Arkansas and Union County, Mississippi serve as the representative counties for each hill-country region. Howard County is located in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, and Union County is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This study identifies who in the rural communities was most responsible for bringing positive changes to their communities, questions what motivated their efforts, and evaluates their successes and failures. To this end, the work first examines …

Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor Jan 2011

Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor

All Master's Theses

Post-Revolutionary American food, common and genteel, acted as both a construct of and contributor to the development of an American national identity as well as a national culinary identity. From 1796 and into the early nineteenth century, Americans actively strove to distinguish themselves from their British backgrounds. As a result, the public discourse of American food shifted to reflect new values of simplicity and equality. Additionally, a new American cuisine began to take shape which embraced native crops, linking those who consumed them to the American soil, and ultimately, the new nation. Through the presence of particular dishes at politically …
