Measuring Up: Standardized Testing And The Making Of Postwar American Identities, 1940-2001, Keegan J. Shepherd
Measuring Up: Standardized Testing And The Making Of Postwar American Identities, 1940-2001, Keegan J. Shepherd
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Standardized testing is a defining feature of contemporary American society. It not only governs how people are channeled through their schooling; it amplifies existing social disparities. Nonetheless, standardized testing endures, namely because it has served as a vital tool for the post-1945 American state. The postwar state prioritized, on the one hand, the cultivation of intellects resilient enough to sustain American geopolitical supremacy through scientific discovery and technological innovation and, on the other hand, the maintenance of an obedient population that would not disrupt existing social hierarchies. Standardized testing helped the postwar state solve this mind-body dilemma. As a function …

Political Animal: Florence Brown Cotnam And The Arkansas Women's Suffrage Movement, Jared Barton Craig
Political Animal: Florence Brown Cotnam And The Arkansas Women's Suffrage Movement, Jared Barton Craig
Theses and Dissertations
Florence Brown Cotnam was a suffragist, war worker, clubwoman, one-time congressional candidate, and an active member of the Democratic Party. She entered the Women’s Suffrage Movement when nothing got done, especially in the American South that opposed equal suffrage on racial and social grounds. The Arkansas General Assembly stalled legislation. Equally daunting were the anti-suffrage arguments were rampant, both in government corridors and in communities across the state. Cotnam was uniquely suited to change that. She remade the perception of a suffragist through a robust publicity campaign, linked the movement to World War I, made suffrage a patriotic issue, countered …

"Our Rights Are Getting More & More Infringed Upon": American Nationalism, Identity, And Sailors' Justice In British Prisons During The War Of 1812, Elizabeth Jones-Minsinger
Staff Scholarship
American maritime prisoners during the War of 1812 took seriously their government's assertion of "free trade and sailors' rights," but when the United States government failed to make this rhetoric a reality, imprisoned sailors clashed with both British and American officials. The U.S. government lacked effective mechanisms to challenge impressment, influence prisoner exchange, or meet the daily needs of its imprisoned citizens, who often interpreted this inefficacy as indifference to their situation. However, the relative absence of government support gave American prisoners space to create a form of nationalism that stressed self-reliance, cooperative action, aggressive masculinity, and occasional violence and …

Gendered Confines: Women's Prison Reform In 1920s & 1930s Arkansas, Ryan Anthony Smith
Student Theses and Dissertations
This work assesses the various types of activism women in Arkansas engaged in during the 1920s and 1930s. Focusing on the biographies of three women—Laura Conner, the first woman appointed to the honorary penitentiary board; Mary Dewees, the first superintendent of the Arkansas State Farm for Women; and Helen Spence, notorious outlaw who escaped the prison farm multiple times—it argues that women’s activism took on different forms yet faced similar obstacles. Conner and Dewees were both educated, middle-class women charged with remodeling the prison system: Conner as an appointed outsider, and Dewees as an agent of the state. Spence, an …

Snags, Sawyers, And Shifting Opinion: The Usage And Response To Snag Boats And Improvement On The Arkansas River From 1800-1860, Michael Colton Adkisson
Student Theses and Dissertations
For farmers along the Arkansas River from 1800-1860, river commerce was an extension of Manifest Destiny. Tying into the larger commerce of the Mississippi was a goal that governed Arkansas planter perceptions of U.S. river improvement programs. Programs like Henry Miller Shreve’s snag boats sought to improve the navigability and safety of the western rivers. The result of this desire to construct a salubrious frontier would be the staunch support for U.S. snag boats and federal improvement during the onset of their usage on the Arkansas River, and an equally strong rebuttal when their ineffectual capabilities eventually became clear. The …

The Black Press In Minnesota During World War I, Alejandra Galvan
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
April 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the United States entering World War I. Many enjoy learning about the battles, the military, and the Homefront. But there is a need for more scholarship to understand the role African Americans played in the war. From my research, many African Americans disagreed with US involvement. Why would a country agree to fight for democracy overseas when its citizens need freedom at home? Racism in the United States concerned African Americans deeply. At the same time, however, African Americans viewed World War I as a way to demonstrate their patriotism. Black citizens …

When Old Age Changed: Inventing The "Senior State," 1945-1975, Benjamin Hellwege
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation asks why public assistance at the federal level in the United States has become significantly oriented towards the needs of older Americans since the New Deal era. It argues that in effect the United States has developed an old age welfare state – a “senior state,” in other words, which has sought primarily to protect the economic status of older Americans, and that the creation of this “senior state” represents the end-point of a long-term project by social reformers, organized labor, and old age advocacy organizations over the course of the second half of the 20th century to …
Designing Simplicity To Achieve Technological Improvement: The General Electric J79 Turbojet Engine; Innovations, Achievements And Effects, Matt C. Brimer
Designing Simplicity To Achieve Technological Improvement: The General Electric J79 Turbojet Engine; Innovations, Achievements And Effects, Matt C. Brimer
Theses
With the beginning of powered, manned flight, the piston engine drove a propeller or multiple propellers to provide the thrust for lift required to overcome the forces of drag and gravity for flight. As aircraft speeds gradually increased over time, the power needed to overcome the aerodynamic inefficiencies of the propeller to greater speeds and altitudes were quickly realized as a hindrance to the potential of aircraft. With the turbojet engine, this new mechanism and subsequent aerodynamic changes revolutionized aircraft to increased speeds and altitude never before achievable with a piston engine. The United States, after acquiring further and more …
