The United States And Cuba: A Study Of The Us’S First Military Occupation And State Building Efforts, James Guillard
The United States And Cuba: A Study Of The Us’S First Military Occupation And State Building Efforts, James Guillard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the US-Cuban relationship during the first military occupation of Cuba from 1898 to 1902, to show the role of high modernist state building in the occupation and the scope of Cuban participation in this endeavor. This is evidenced by heavily examining the annual reports of the US Military Governor General of Cuba and the US appointed civil secretaries of the Cuban government. This research differs from previous studies in the field by introducing James C. Scott’s concepts of legibility and high modernist state building, as well as suggesting that the Cuban civil secretaries participated within a limited …
The Chinese In California: Archaeology And Railroads At The Turn Of The Century, Evelyn Hildebrand
The Chinese In California: Archaeology And Railroads At The Turn Of The Century, Evelyn Hildebrand
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Research on Chinese sites in California have focused on ethnicity, ethnic relations, and the material expression of ethnicity all of which are key issues in overseas Chinese archaeology. Chinatown sites produced data that helped define Chinese culture and experience in historical California. One railroad construction work camp site identified in 2016 located in the Cajon Pass in the late 1800’s offers the potential for insight into the lives of the workers. Chinese occupation in San Bernardino is not well understood, and the site may offer information on the culture, traditions, and integrations of the workers. Thousands of Chinese men left …
He Rode Alone: Francis Scott Key As An Advocate For Freedom, Jonathan A. Richie
He Rode Alone: Francis Scott Key As An Advocate For Freedom, Jonathan A. Richie
Masters Theses
Recently Francis Scott Key and the Star Spangled Banner have come under increasing historical scrutiny. Claims and allegations of racism and hidden meanings behind the poem have abounded and even led to statues being torn down across the nation. But what is the truth? In reality Francis Scott Key's record on race and slavery is dramatically more complex than the critics would suggest. Indeed, Key spent nearly 40 years of his life advocating in court for the freedom of slaves in Washington DC.
"Some Kind Of Socialist:" Lee Hays, The Social Gospel, And The Path To The Cultural Front, Elizabeth Withey
"Some Kind Of Socialist:" Lee Hays, The Social Gospel, And The Path To The Cultural Front, Elizabeth Withey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 1939, with sixty-five dollars and twenty pages of Commonwealth Labor songs, Lee Hays, youngest son of a Methodist minister, hitchhiked thirteen hundred miles from Mena, Arkansas, to New York City where he found stardom in the Folk Revival movement, first, as a founder of the Almanac Singers then the Weavers. Hays’ biographer Doris Willens and others, viewing Hays’ unabashed socialism, ribald humor, penchant for beer, brandy, and cigarettes as induced by the childhood trauma of his father’s death, argue Hays rejected his father’s beliefs: replacing religion with radical politics. This thesis, in contrast, argues Hays’ upbringing immersed in contradictions …
Education In Florida, 1821-1829, James O. Knauss
Education In Florida, 1821-1829, James O. Knauss
Florida Historical Quarterly
Writers on the history of education in Florida have usually passed over the period between 1821 and 1830 with only casual mention. During this decade no public schools were established in the territory and the records relating to private schools and libraries are meagre. However, since the educational activities in these years form the background of the later cultural development, it seems advisable to gather all available material on the subject and to attempt to draw a picture as accurate as possible under the circumstances.

Florida Against Georgia: A Story Of The Boundary Dispute, Fred Cubberly
Florida Against Georgia: A Story Of The Boundary Dispute, Fred Cubberly
Florida Historical Quarterly
It has been said that boundary line disputes between individuals are the worst kind of quarrels, and often cause lifelong differences and even descend to heirs of original disputants. When sovereign states have boundary line questions to settle, the Supreme Court of the United States is the tribunal that settles the question, for it is in that Court alone that such questions may be litigated.
Old Pictures Of The New Florida: Ponce De Leon And His Land, Benjamin Harrison
Old Pictures Of The New Florida: Ponce De Leon And His Land, Benjamin Harrison
Florida Historical Quarterly
The discoverers of a new world are accepted as among the boldest and shrewdest men, with very few exceptions; it is the misfortune of Florida that her history is made to begin in popular conception, with her discovery by an old man, who foolishly sought here a renewed youth, that he might gain the love of a young girl. But Ponce stood high among the soldiers and statesmen of Spain, because of the services already given. When he received permission to seek and govern a new land, he was only in the maturity of mental and physical vigor, and if …
An Indian Bettlefield Near Melrose, H. Von Noszky
An Indian Bettlefield Near Melrose, H. Von Noszky
Florida Historical Quarterly
Although it is well known that the neighborhood of Melrose is rich in Indian mounds and a fine hunting ground for flint arrowheads, pottery; and the like, few are aware that within a few miles of Melrose was fought one of the most important battles on Florida soil. This struggle took place between DeSoto’s forces and the Indians under Vitachuco, some time in 1539.
Florida's "State Library", Florida Historical Society
Florida's "State Library", Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
The words are quoted, because, although in frequent use, they constitute a gross misnomer, the so-called "State Library" of Florida having always consisted of a great mass of printed books, pamphlets, maps, documents, etc., mixed and jumbled together in inextricable confusion, on shelves, on the floors, filed in dark corners and under stairways, in the damp basement of the State Capitol - a shame and a disgrace to the intelligence and public spirit of a civilized and long-suffering people.
