Broken Nest: Deterring China From Invading Taiwan, Jared M. Mckinney, Peter Harris Nov 2021

Broken Nest: Deterring China From Invading Taiwan, Jared M. Mckinney, Peter Harris

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Deterring a Chinese invasion of Taiwan without recklessly threatening a great-power war is both possible and necessary through a tailored deterrence package that goes beyond either fighting over Taiwan or abandoning it. This article joins cutting-edge understandings of deterrence with empirical evidence of Chinese strategic thinking and culture to build such a strategy.

Sherman And His Historians: An End To The Outsized Destroyer Myth?, Mitchell G. Klingenberg Nov 2021

Sherman And His Historians: An End To The Outsized Destroyer Myth?, Mitchell G. Klingenberg

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

For years, scholars have viewed the career of William Tecumseh Sherman in light of an antiquated destroyer myth and neglected his memoirs, which were written as a military textbook. This essay reviews Sherman’s legacy and literature, both of which contributed to the advancement of modern military thought. His experiences may serve as a prescriptive text to servicemembers, providing critical lessons on military warfare and philosophy still relevant today.

Defeat Mechanisms In Modern Warfare, Frank Hoffman Nov 2021

Defeat Mechanisms In Modern Warfare, Frank Hoffman

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article explores the current debate about service and Joint operating concepts, starting with the Army’s multi-domain operations concept. It argues for adaptations to an old operational design technique—defeat mechanisms; updates to Joint and service planning doctrine; and discipline regarding emerging concepts. Rather than debate over attrition versus maneuver, combinations of a suite of defeat mechanisms should be applied to gain victory in the future.

“Othering” And Religion: Political Discourse Of 9/11, Emily Dawn Riley Nov 2021

“Othering” And Religion: Political Discourse Of 9/11, Emily Dawn Riley

Student Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is to understand the ways public figures discuss 9/11, religious, or racial controversy to sustain or modify national identity and the legacy it holds in American society. By examining artifacts from three well-known political figures, 43rd President George W. Bush, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and 44th President Barack Obama, I argue that politicians utilize elements of Kenneth Burke’s (1950) theory of identification and division to negotiate shared identities amongst Americans in times of heightened religious and racial controversy. Presidents and political leaders have the authority to shape and create how events, people, …

The Ironclad Economy, Ryan Thomas Nov 2021

The Ironclad Economy, Ryan Thomas

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

This paper investigates and describes the Confederate navy’s attempt to establish a naval presence in New Orleans. At the forefront of the Civil War, the Confederate States were pressed to create and sustain a working military presence within an evolving economy. The Southern economy was about to be ravished by the Union’s blockade. Both the Union and the Confederacy knew that establishing an early presence on the water would be of the greatest importance, of which the Union had a considerably large head start on the nonexistent Confederate navy. This paper covers the birth of the Confederate navy in an …

Letitia Carson In Court: African American Women, Property, And Wages In The Pacific Northwest, Stephanie Marie Vallance

Dissertations and Theses

Letitia Carson arrived in Oregon from Missouri in 1845, accompanied by David Carson and their newborn child, a daughter named Martha. The Carsons settled in the Soap Creek Valley and took advantage of Oregon's Provisional Government's donation land claim program, living on 640 acres in the newly formed Benton County with Martha and a second child, a son named Adam, born a few years after arriving in Oregon. Within ten years, however, David would be dead and Letitia would be dispossessed of all property and belongings. A former slave, Letitia had little social standing in the new territory and no …

William V. Knott And The Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1916, Wayne Flynt Nov 2021

William V. Knott And The Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1916, Wayne Flynt

Florida Historical Quarterly

Sometime around 1958, William V. Knott recorded his impressions of the 1916 gubernatorial contest for a graduate student in New England. Much of this material was already available, especially in the master’s thesis by John R. Deal, Jr., "Sidney Johnston Catts, Stormy Petrel of Florida Politics" (University of Florida, 1949). Deal interviewed Knott and emphasized many points covered in this account. This is, however, the most complete and authoritative account yet published of the infamous "Sturkie Resolution" which played a critical role in the campaign. The manuscript is also a most complete revelation of Knott’s critique of the "Bryan Primary …

A Study Of Florida Defense Costs, 1565-1585: A Quantification Of Florida History, Paul E. Hoffman Nov 2021

A Study Of Florida Defense Costs, 1565-1585: A Quantification Of Florida History, Paul E. Hoffman

Florida Historical Quarterly

Superficially quantitative history, like happiness, is different things to different people. Basically, however, it seeks to verify in more explicit ways generalizations such as "X was more important than Y," and "slavery was (or was not) profitable." To that end, numbers and statistical tests are developed to describe the same reality as that dealt with by "traditional" history. For most practitioners of the methodology this numerical description is a second, verifying description having as much validity, but no more than a narrative about the same historical events. Occasionally, as with the fiscal history of Florida from 1565 to 1585, the …

Booker T. Washington's Florida Incident, 1903-1904, Arthur O. White Nov 2021

Booker T. Washington's Florida Incident, 1903-1904, Arthur O. White

Florida Historical Quarterly

"Come without fail. You will receive kindly and friendly welcome. Address to be given in courthouse to both races." This telegram of February 4, 1903, reinvited Booker T. Washington, America’s best known black man, to speak on the occasion of the joint meeting of the General Education Board and county superintendents of education at Gainesville, Florida. It was front page news throughout the United States. Washington's acceptance of an earlier invitation from State Superintendent of Education William N. Sheats, one of the South's most renowned educators, had caused intense controversy among Floridians over the idea of a black man, however …

Florencia Investigation Of Spanish Timucua, Fred Lamar Pearson, Jr. Nov 2021

Florencia Investigation Of Spanish Timucua, Fred Lamar Pearson, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1565 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded St. Augustine on the Florida peninsula. Spanish activity pushed Spain's northern frontier up as far as Chesapeake Bay, but effective control extended only to Port Royal, South Carolina. Menéndez, and subsequent Florida governors, established missions and presidios along the Atlantic seacoast and in the interior areas to give added protection to Florida.

Florida's Image In Juvenile Fiction, 1909-1914, Peter A. Soderbergh Nov 2021

Florida's Image In Juvenile Fiction, 1909-1914, Peter A. Soderbergh

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the years between Appomattox and Sarajevo many young readers took their leisure pleasures from the pages of hardbacked novelettes. More respectable, to parents at least, than the "dime novel," the novellas exploded with the heady escapades of fictional boys and girls whose mental and physical reserves were unlimited. Descended from earlier models created by Martha Finley and William T. Adams— and rooted in the "success" ethos popularized by Horatio Alger, Jr.— the series published after 1898 outdid their prototypes in every aspect but quality.

Black Slaves, Red Masters, White Middlemen: A Congressional Debate Of 1852, James E. Sefton Nov 2021

Black Slaves, Red Masters, White Middlemen: A Congressional Debate Of 1852, James E. Sefton

Florida Historical Quarterly

A list of the most noteworthy congressional debates over slavery would include those on the Compromises of 1820 and 1850, the Gag Rule, the slave trade, and the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, among others. Sometimes, however, debate on a comparatively minor episode of a large issue can be highly illuminating. In the spring of 1852, the House of Representatives devoted perhaps ten hours to a bill which brought to a close a bizzare story that had begun sixteen years earlier during federal efforts to remove the Seminole Indians from Florida. Ever since the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1819, white …

Roots Of Justice: Historical Truth And Reconciliation In Lincoln And Nebraska, Veronica Nohemi Duran, Crystal Dunning, Kathleen A. Johnson, Paul Olson

Truth and Reconciliation History Project

A bibliography of resources about the history in Nebraska of Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Recent Refugees

We hope that these five bibliographies will prove fruitful in helping us to understand what our history has been, where we have gone astray, and what we can do to help bring about reconciliation in our community and in our state.

The discovery of what has happened in Nebraska in the last hundred and seventy years is not an easy task, but it is our goal in putting together this bibliography to begin that task. By putting together a picture …

Heroes At Home: Honoring Our Nation's Veterans, Kayla Vasilko Oct 2021

Heroes At Home: Honoring Our Nation's Veterans, Kayla Vasilko

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

There are currently 17.42 million veterans living in America today. These heroes dedicated their services in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Gulf War, leaving home and giving up the comforts of stability, family, and guaranteed safety to ensure that America remains a stable and safe place for individuals and families to call home, yet upon returning home themselves, our nation’s veterans have had to face immense hardships. About 40,000 veterans are without shelter in the U.S. on any given night; some of the leading causes of veteran homelessness include PTSD, social isolation, unemployment, and substance …

Apalachee Indians, 1704-1763, James W. Covington Oct 2021

Apalachee Indians, 1704-1763, James W. Covington

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of Florida’s most tragic incidents occurred when Governor James Moore of South Carolina and his small army composed of 1,000 Indians and fifty whites moved into the Apalachee area of North Florida and laid waste to what had been the center of the Franciscan missions. Accounts of this raid describe the gallant defense made at Ayubale mission by Father Miranda and his neophytes, the defeat of the relief column from San Luis under command of Captain Ruiz Mexia, the torture of captives, the destruction of the Apalachee villages, and the removal of 3,000 or more Apalachees for resettlement in …

Cruise Of The Minnehaha, Pat Dodson Oct 2021

Cruise Of The Minnehaha, Pat Dodson

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the winter of 1891-1892 four men— three brothers, Stanley, Robert, and Edward Bullock, and their friend, A. E. Woodham — sailed a thirty-foot sloop, the Minnehaha, from Narcoossee on East Lake Tohopekaliga on a round trip down the Kissimmee River to Lake Okeechobee and out to the Gulf of Mexico via the Caloosahatchee River. They began the trip that fall down the Kissimmee River, opened a few years before by Hamilton Disston’s dredges. Leaving November 26, they reached Marco on January 9 and returned home February 8. They followed a tortuous route, covering about 1,000 miles in seventy-three days.

Tivoli Theatre Of Pensacola, Dian Lee Shelley Oct 2021

Tivoli Theatre Of Pensacola, Dian Lee Shelley

Florida Historical Quarterly

Pensacola during the 1820s was hardly more than a small frontier town, yet its citizens, with a predominately French and Spanish background, enthusiastically supported a theatre. Its importance is not that major theatrical personalities were attracted to the community, but that such a remote town, still the center of Indian trade, would welcome a theatre at all. The desire and support of dramatic entertainment suggests a different perspective from the conception of Pensacola during this period as a raw frontier town surrounded by wilderness.

Tampa Bay In 1757: Francisco Maria Celi's Journal And Logbook, Part Ii, John D. Ware

Sunday, the 24th of April dawned with horizons and sky clear and wind favorable from the NE. At 6:00 A.M. after hearing the Holy Sacrifiice of the Mass, we departed the vessel with the longboat and canoe, both armed, in which the following men went: Frigate Lieutenant Don José Jiménez; Don Fraucisco Maria Celi; Don Juan Franco, a draftsman from the navy yard by the stream;55 the carpenter and the caulker of the xebec; and fifteen seamen. All this was in expectation of drawing a chart, and of surveying the forests and pines for masts, their quality, length, and thickness. …
