The History Of Martha J. Lamb: Her Origin, Rise, And Progress., Mary Collins
The History Of Martha J. Lamb: Her Origin, Rise, And Progress., Mary Collins
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
On June 16, 1883, Harper’s Weekly ran a story foreshadowing the transformation of the City of New York from the island of Manhattan to a massive metropolis, the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. Another article on the page announced that Martha J. Lamb “has become editor of the ‘The Magazine of American History.’” It does not mention that she was also president of the company purchasing the journal. Ten years later, just a few months after her death, Mrs. Lamb’s great work, her History of the City of New York: Its Origin, Rise, and Progress, was included in …

The Question Of Morality In Relations Between The United States And Huerta's Government, Ashley Towle
The Question Of Morality In Relations Between The United States And Huerta's Government, Ashley Towle
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
The presidency of General Victoriano Huerta was one of the darker times in the history of the Mexican Revolution. Often described as a ruthless dictator, Huerta went to extreme measures to maintain power, even going as far as to assassinate those who opposed his rule. Senator Belisario Dominguez was one of those men who opposed Huerta's right to the presidency, and was assassinated after speaking out against the dictator. The series of events following the senator's murder did not affect just Mexico; the repercussions of Huerta's actions were felt in Europe and the United States. As a result of Huerta's …

Forging Insights: Indian Agency Blacksmiths Of The American Frontier, Adam G. Novey
Forging Insights: Indian Agency Blacksmiths Of The American Frontier, Adam G. Novey
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
Following the War of 1812, the United States government sought to more directly deal with the Native tribes in the American interior. The establishment of Indian agency blacksmith shops was one significant component of this endeavor. While it remains a virtually untouched topic in scholarship, the analysis of agency blacksmith services may reveal significant historical insights within topics as diverse as ethnic perception, material culture, frontier government practices, and language dynamics during a time of great upheaval. This case study of the blacksmith shop at the Fort Winnebago sub-agency in pre-state Wisconsin seeks to demonstrate the manner in which these …

Mercy Otis Warren: Republican Scribe And Defender Of Liberties, Mary Kathryn Mueller
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
An active proponent of republican government, Mercy Otis Warren had a significant role in the revolutionary period. She was a woman who was close to the action, well-acquainted with the central figures, and instrumental in bringing about the monumental changes in America in the late 1700s. Referred to as the “muse of the revolution,”[1] Mercy Otis Warren used her pen to significantly broaden the colonial understanding of a republican form of government and passionately promote it. From a collection of early poems and political satires written in the years preceding the war to her epic history of the revolution published …

Political Gridlock:The Ongoing Threat To American Democracy, Jalen A. Campbell
Political Gridlock:The Ongoing Threat To American Democracy, Jalen A. Campbell
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
My paper answers the question: What are the origins of extreme political gridlock in the United States government and how can it be solved? I use quantitative research in order to measure the exact periods of split government and I note its effect on the probability of enacting legislation. The qualitative research highlights the key factors that leading to the increase of political gridlock from 1964-2016. From my case study, I argue political gridlock has increased because of ideological shifts in voters and politicians between 1980 and 1992, voting system imbalances, and critical political and economic events. I conclude with …

Ancestral Caddo Fine Ware Vessels From Cahokian Sites In The Mid-Continent, Ca. A.D. 1050-1300, Timothy K. Perttula
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Ancestral Caddo ceramic vessels and ceramic vessel sherds have been identified from Cahokia and other sites in the U.S. Midwest in contexts dating from ca. A.D. 1050-1300. Archaeological findings from recent work in the East St. Louis Precinct by the Illinois State Archaeological Survey provides a wealth of data on the Mississippian ceramics found there as well as ceramic wares of likely ancestral Caddo manufacture. These Caddo wares comprise less than 0.3 percent of the more than 15,600 vessel batches in the East St. Louis Precinct assemblage, and almost all of them are on local pastes. It is probable, therefore, …
