“Started By A Mouse” An Examination Into The Character Of Walt Disney, And The Company That He Built., Micah P. Bellamy
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
Walt Disney's legacy reaches all over the world, which is a far stretch from his humble beginning delivering newspapers in Kansas City. This study will examine Walt Disney's life, starting with his humble beginnings on the farm, his early days as a cartoonist, to the rise of the Walt Disney Corporation. The examination will look at the man, Walt Disney, focusing on his upbringing and the various challenges that he faced throughout his life that shaped the leader that he would later become, and will reveal how, despite the adversities, obstacles, and challenges that Walt faced, and how they shaped …

"Prophecies Of Loss": Debating Slave Flight During Virginia's Secession Crisis, Evan Turiano
"Prophecies Of Loss": Debating Slave Flight During Virginia's Secession Crisis, Evan Turiano
Publications and Research
This article examines debates over fugitives from slavery during Virginia’s secession movement. By considering these debates in the context of Virginia’s history of freedom seekers, the constitutional politics of fugitive slave rendition, and white fears of politically informed slave resistance, this article clarifies how proslavery Virginians understood the threat posed by interstate slave flight in 1861. In the wake of Abraham Lincoln's election, proslavery Virginians on both sides of the secession conflict agreed that runaways posed a grave danger to the future of slavery in the state. Early in the convention, southeastern planters and northwestern unionists forged an alliance based …

"Secession's Moving Foundation": Fugitive Slave Rendition And The Politics Of American Slavery, Evan Turiano
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the political conflict over fugitive slave rendition from the era of the American Revolution through the passage of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law. It pays particular attention to the struggle over the legal rights due to African Americans accused of being fugitive slaves. Slaveholders claimed an absolute property right over accused fugitive slaves and argued that any recognition of legal remedies for accused runaways threatened that right. Free African Americans and their allies in the abolitionist movement asserted that Black people accused of having escaped slavery were due a legal process. This was a vital protection against …

Katharine Bement Davis: Defying Expectations As A Woman And In The Study Of Women, Ella Hester
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Katharine Bement Davis’ (1860-1935) life and career as a highly educated scientist and Progressive activist placed her at the forefront of various moral panic debates at the turn of the twentieth century. Davis was born into a staunch abolitionist and suffragist family in upstate New York in 1860. Her family’s politics were grounded in progressive Protestant principles which allowed her to gain access to higher education as a white woman from a middle-class family. Her education left her poised to use the latest scientific research to shape Progressive dogma in the 1910s and 1920s. Davis’ education and the groundbreaking research …
Yankees In The Indian Ocean : American Commerce And Whaling, 1786–1860, Jane Hooper
Yankees In The Indian Ocean : American Commerce And Whaling, 1786–1860, Jane Hooper
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The history of US imperialism remains incomplete without this consideration of long-overlooked nineteenth-century American commercial and whaling ventures in the Indian Ocean.
Yankees in the Indian Ocean shows how nineteenth-century American merchant and whaler activity in the Indian Ocean shaped the imperial future of the United States, influenced the region’s commerce, encouraged illegal slaving, and contributed to environmental degradation. For a brief time, Americans outnumbered other Western visitors to Mauritius, Madagascar, Zanzibar, and the East African littoral. In a relentless search for commodities and provisions, American whaleships landed at islands throughout the ocean and stripped them of resources. Yet Americans …

(Re)Constructing Homescapes: “Archaeological Remote Sensing” And Ground-Truthing Of The Walker Place Homestead At Spirit Hill Farm, Tate County, Mississippi, Gabriel Griffin
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on an early nineteenth-century homestead known as the Walker Place homestead at Spirit Hill Farm in northern Mississippi. The goal of this thesis is to conduct a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and shovel test survey to explore how changing landscapes simultaneously (re)create and destroy senses of place or Homescapes. Homescapes have received little attention in the field of archaeology and have not been applied to Euro-American Homescapes. I apply this theoretical construct in a novel way as a venture to further develop an avenue in archaeology to be collaborative and understand the past in a way that accurately …

Taking Aim: The Evolution Of Women In Competitive Shooting Sports In The 20th Century United States, Alena Rose-Marie Buczynski
Taking Aim: The Evolution Of Women In Competitive Shooting Sports In The 20th Century United States, Alena Rose-Marie Buczynski
Masters Theses
Throughout history, women have been overlooked, discounted, and ignored for their skills and abilities as competitive and professional athletes. Competitive shooting sports were popular in the United States; however, men excluded women from participating in many of these activities until the early 19th century, when America saw the rise of famous markswomen such as Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, and Lillian Smith. These women challenged the masculinity of the sport of shooting and bested many of their male counterparts as they traveled and performed across the United States. In the 1970s, women found themselves entering the Olympic arena of competitive shooting …

The Forgotten Faith: The Experiences Of Enslaved Muslims And The Influence Of Islam In The United States From 1730-1864, Amani Altwam
All Theses
Muslims were present in North America before the establishment of the
American/British colonies. The first Muslims in America were not citizens, but
enslaved Africans forced into the slave trade in the eighteenth century. Muslim slaves
in America were much more prevalent than anyone could have imagined and yet, the
religion of these slaves was rarely ever brought to the surface. In this thesis, I argue
that Muslim slaves not only existed in America but most of them were literate in
multiple languages, well-educated, and were capable of holding on to a set of beliefs.

On May 24, 1998, a self-identified "Florida Cracker" singer-songwriter named Bobby Hicks swaggered onstage at the Florida Folk Festival armed with a guitar and an attitude. This was the forty-fifth year of the festival, a state funded event co-sponsored by the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Park Service. Since 1953 the event had been held each May at the Stephen Foster Memorial State Park in White Springs, the boyhood home town of Fred P. Cone, governor of Florida between 1937 and 1941. The first year of his term, Cone argued that a memorial to Foster should be built in …

The Bluff And Blanding Fights: Race, Religion, And Settler Colonialism In Progressive-Era America, Reilly Ben Hatch
The Bluff And Blanding Fights: Race, Religion, And Settler Colonialism In Progressive-Era America, Reilly Ben Hatch
History ETDs
This project uses the Bluff War of 1915 and the Posey War of 1923—both of which took place in southeastern Utah—to look at the complex relationship between race, religion, and culture in American Indian policy at the beginning of the twentieth century. It shows how White Mesa Utes, local Mormon settlers, the federal government, and Progressive activists used the conflicts to argue the place of Indians in a “frontier-less” America. It also examines the complex relationship between Mormons and Indians and draws conclusions on how that relationship was influenced by an American government which sought to assimilate “others” into the …

Pro Vs. Am: Class Warfare In Early American Ski Competition, John W. Lundin

Originally Published in Skiing History MagazineJuly-August 2022.
In the late 1800s, professional sports attracted high-stakes gambling. The potential for bribery and extortion led to a general sense that paid athletes were corruptible and competitions untrustworthy. While betting on amateur events was common, a deep divide emerged between “pure” amateurs, who were said to compete for the love of the sport, and professionals, who competed for money in the form of cash prizes or other remuneration. The distinction often boiled down to so-called gentleman-athletes, who had private fortunes, versus working-class athletes, who had to earn money to live and train. Sport …

Catastrophic Christianity: An Iconological Study Of The Messianic Idea In American Protestant Christianity Circa 1900-1940, Adam D. J. Brett
Dissertations - ALL
A historically variegated emblem of trust and faith, the messianic idea is the offer of religion to the people for salvation from the coming catastrophe. This dissertation analyzes the messianic idea in "America." The foci of the study are popular messianic figurations that serve as heuristic devices to explicate early 20th century U.S. culture, revealing two ideological impulses that encapsulate collective responses to the anxieties of the age: authoritarian-populism and catastrophic-utopianism. Four case studies, encompassing four different genres of media, define and illustrate these ideological impulses: The Fundamentals, Superman comic books, Bruce Barton's capitalist Christianity, and The Wizard of Oz …

After four years of construction and fanfare, the Tampa Bay Hotel opened its doors to northern tourists on February 11, 1891. Journalists on the scene reported that the hotel's builder, interior designer, owner, and all around mastermind, Henry B. Plant, had invited the people of Tampa, prospective hotel guests, and even rival businessmen to view his wondrous new resort.1 At its surface the building was a marvel to behold and quite a contrast to the collection of meager structures and rail lines that made up the "arid desert of sand" that was Tampa.2 Its fine red brick walls and wide …

Early Tourism And Harriet Beecher Stowe: The Discovery Of Stowe's First Published Descriptions Of Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
While many living today may not realize it, Harriet Beecher Stowe was the most famous American woman of the mid-nineteenth century. In fact, she was so famous that when she visited President Lincoln at the White House, he is believed to have greeted her with these words: "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war." This statement, of course, refers to the far-reaching impact of Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. For all its faults, this work exposed a horrible truth about slavery: that a slave owner possessed the right to maim or kill a …

Puritan Patriarchal Construction Of American Sexual Morality And Woman's Worth: A Daughter's Response, Savannah Mather

While modern conceptions of Puritanism regard it as an artifact of American history, whose woman-killing theologies are long buried and forgotten, the bible in my father’s closet and the recently leaked Supreme Court draft to overturn Roe. Vs. Wade would argue otherwise. Cotton Mather’s favorite book Ornaments for the Daughters of Zion outlined both the ideals and detriments of the Anglo-American female identity. In this text, white women were taught to absolve themselves of the “nakedness” in dress Puritan settlers associated Indigenous people with. A woman’s ability to align herself to the ideals of chastity determined her own and her …
