1999 Excavations At Mission Rosario, David L. Nickels

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Mission Nuestra Senora del Rosario founded in 1754, is located four miles west of modem-day Goliad, Texas. Established for the Karankawa Indians, it was finally abandoned in 1808. Archaeological investigations have been conducted at the site in the 1940s, 1970s, and 1990s. This body of work, the most recent, was conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio (CAR) (UTSA) under the auspices of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). In July through September 1999, CAR excavated 105 units, cleared some above-ground walls, and probed for buried walls or foundations. A geophysical …

Archeological Test Excavations At 41wm543 On Fm 734, The Parmer Lane Extension, Williamson County, Texas, Barbara J. Hickman

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

A previously recorded site, 41WM543, was re-evaluated by archeologists from the Texas Department of Transportation in connection with the FM 734 Parmer Lane extension northwest of Austin, Texas. The portion of the site within the proposed right-of-way was tested after a burned rock concentration was exposed. Chronology of the open campsite is based on projectile point typology as no datable features were found. The diagnostic projectile points represented a time span of Early Archaic through Late Archaic Periods. The majority of the points were found in only two levels, however. Given the lack of buried features, no further work is …

The Cosmopolitan South - Privileged Southerners, Philadelphia, And The Fashionable Tour In The Antebellum Era, Daniel P. Kilbride Jan 2000

The Cosmopolitan South - Privileged Southerners, Philadelphia, And The Fashionable Tour In The Antebellum Era, Daniel P. Kilbride

History

Analyzes connections between the Southern aristocracy and the elite of Philadelphia in the antebellum period. The two groups shared class interests that Southerners found more compatible than association with their parochial, rural countrymen. Privileged Southerners preferred an atmosphere both urban and urbane, which they found in Northern cities, especially Philadelphia, where they toured the city's prisons, parks, and museums, and sampled its fleshpots. In doing so, they shared a class attitude of exclusivity that disparaged local and country life in favor of a cohesive national elite. The bonds of class even held against the upheavals preceding the Civil War and …

Cultural Atrocity Expressed In Cultural Art, Marlie Mcgovern Jan 2000

Cultural Atrocity Expressed In Cultural Art, Marlie Mcgovern

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Some of the most horrific chapters in human history have involved an ethnic dimension, notably the centuries-long obliteration of traditional Nigerian cultures by European colonizers, the attempted destruction of European Jews in the Holocaust, and the World War ll decision to assault the Japanese with atomic bombs. The consequences of the above atrocities are not contained within temporal or cultural barriers, but hold profound and pervasive ramifications within contemporary society in its entirety. More recent conflicts in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Balkans reemphasize the horror and suffering brought about by cultural collisions. One of the most potent reactions to …

Rural African Americans And Progressive Reform, Debra A. Reid Jan 2000

Rural African Americans And Progressive Reform, Debra A. Reid

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Histories of African Americans in the postbellum rural South tend to depict sharecroppers and tenants as victims of the crop lien system, racism, and the capitalization of agriculture. This paper concentrates instead on rural re? formers who celebrated life in the country and believed that comfortable homes, better schools, and wholesome residents could free blacks from bondage. Their agrarian ideology reflected Euro-American influences; most believed in the Jeffersonian rhetoric that linked land ownership to virtue and independence. Because they realized that the crop lien system made prop? erty acquisition an impossible dream for most blacks, they advocated diversification and sustainable …

Come-Outers And Community Men: Abraham Lincoln And The Idea Of Community In Nineteenth-Century America, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 2000

Come-Outers And Community Men: Abraham Lincoln And The Idea Of Community In Nineteenth-Century America, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

The most eloquent and moving words Abraham Lincoln ever uttered about any community were those "few and simple words" he spoke on the rear platform of the railroad car that lay waiting on the morning of February 11, 1861, to take him to Washington, to the presidency, and ultimately to his death. As his "own breast heaved with emotion" so that "he could scarcely command his feelings sufficiently to commence" (in the description of James C. Conkling), Lincoln declared that "No one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting." To leave Springfield was to …

The Columbia River's Fate In The Twentieth Century, William L. Lang Jan 2000

The Columbia River's Fate In The Twentieth Century, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Discusses the history of the Columbia River during the 20th century, emphasizing the image of the river as both a source of industry and an example of wild natural beauty. In 1933 the river was dammed to harness its power for hydroelectricity and control its unpredictable flooding. With the completion of the dams in the 1970's, however, came problems with the edenic vision of the river, especially with the annual salmon run. By the late 20th century, the salmon had all but disappeared, leading to an ongoing conflict between supporters of the dams and conservationists.

Buying For The Cold War: Influences On Air Force Procurement, 1945-1956, William Cline Oct 1999

Buying For The Cold War: Influences On Air Force Procurement, 1945-1956, William Cline

History Theses & Dissertations

Military planning and buying changed dramatically after World War II as more attention and resources were applied toward the development of a strategy that made air power the center of strategic thinking. Nevertheless, when by 1947, aircraft production dropped so low as to threaten the viability of the aircraft industry, President Truman formed the President's Air Policy Commission, which spawned a cooperative effort between government and industry.

The relationship between government officials, particularly in the military, and industry executives became so close in the next decade that the health of the aircraft industry became linked with that of the military. …
