The Treaty of Washington, also known as the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, signed August 9, 1842, resolved border issues between the United States and British North American colonies in the region that became Canada. Pencil notations indicate the location of dams and woods camps. Names included on camps include: J. Hayward and N. Bowker. Many of the landscape features are labeled.

The map label reads: "Plan of Townships. Nos. 21 & 27 E.D. East half. No. 43 M.D. No. 6 & N. half No. 5 with two mile strips north, N.D. Situated in County of Washington, State of Maine." The map scale is 1:63,360, or one inch to a mile.

Undated, hand-drawn map in pen and ink on vellum. Map has no recorded title, date or scale. A red bordered adhesive stamp is labeled T.ship 3 in pencil. A faded pencil inscription at the bottom of the map is illegible. Lovely Brook is identified as laying south of the identified "South Line of the Plymouth Township," but a larger river bisecting the land block is unidentified. The creator of the map is not identified but the document is part of the collection belonging to John Gardner.

Adam Cureton is an internationally recognized disability scholar and activist who specializes in ethics and the philosophy of disability. His books, which draw on his own experiences as a legally blind person, include Disability and Disadvantage, Disability in Practice, The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy and Disability, and the forthcoming Respecting Disability. He founded and served as president of the Society for Philosophy and Disability and helped to create the American Philosophical Association’s Committee on the Status of Disabled People. He is a Rhodes Scholar and currently serves as the Lindsay Young Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee.

The Carlisle Indian Boarding School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania was the first large Indian boarding school to open in the United States. Carlisle was founded by Richard Henry Pratt and opened in 1879. Carlisle was the first of hundreds of Indian boarding schools that operated throughout the United States and served as the model for many of the schools that followed it. The school was military-run and federally funded until its closure in 1918. The purpose of Carlisle and the rest of the boarding schools was to culturally assimilate American Indians and do so by forcibly removing them from their families. …

Franco-American newspapers and periodicals occupy an overlapping space between primary and secondary literature, and their shadow looms large over the collective body of historic Franco-American sources. Their significance to the Franco-American community is hard to overstate. These periodical publications complicate issues of identity in the U.S. Northeast and are an integral part of Québec history itself. This article details current work to inventory newspaper and periodical titles (currently over 400) and makes accessible our collectively built, evolving inventory of Franco-American newspapers. Horses are the unsung heroes of the American Civil War. Both armies relied heavily on equines for a variety of tasks. They carried cavalry soldiers on the battlefield and pulled wagons for artillery and military supply chains. Horses could also serve as companion animals. Soldiers formed friendships with their horses as a way to heal from the trauma of combat and stave off the monotony of camp life. Writing about animals in letters to their families enabled soldiers to explain their experiences in more palatable terms to their families. As over 1.2 million horses and mules died in the conflict, …
