Change Agents’ Orientations To Change, Mir Afzal Tajik
Change Agents’ Orientations To Change, Mir Afzal Tajik
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
This study explores five field education officers’ (FEOs) understanding of their dual roles as educational reformers and community developers in the rural, mountainous district of Chitral, Pakistan. In particular, it examines their specific actions and methods (strategies) and their underlying assumptions and core values (orientations) of change. These FEOs work as change agents in schools and in the local communities where schools have been established by the Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan (AKES,P). The study’s findings derive from empirical data collected through qualitative research methods, such as semi-structured interviews (individual and focus-group), non-participant observations, post-observation discussions, informal conversations and analysis …
Reforming Public Education In Developing Countries: Turning Challenges Into Opportunities, Rana Hussain, Sajid Ali
Reforming Public Education In Developing Countries: Turning Challenges Into Opportunities, Rana Hussain, Sajid Ali
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
This paper tries to respond to a basic question: “Can public education (or some aspects of it) be reformed?” The authors’ response to this question is, “Yes, public education can be reformed, if contextual possibilities are exploited efficiently.” Although a straight forward and simplistic response to the question, this was felt necessary to counter an unfavourable bias towards public education sector without recognizing the challenges that it faces, and without recognizing the potential of many of the public teachers who continuously strive to change these negative perceptions. This paper recognizes the potential of public sector education and shares a relatively …
Action Research: A Viable Alternative For In-Service Teacher Professional Development, Bernadette L. Dean
Action Research: A Viable Alternative For In-Service Teacher Professional Development, Bernadette L. Dean
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
In this paper, the author argues for the professional development of teachers to be based upon systematic action research undertaken as a collegial activity within the culture of the school. Three case studies of action research, one each from South Asia, East Africa and Central Asia, in which Professional Development Teachers (PDTs) (MEd graduates of AKU-IED) worked with teachers to improve teaching and learning in the classroom, are presented to illustrate the possibilities and challenges of using action research for teacher professional development. The author further argues that while action research for teacher professional development addresses the challenges of other …

Teaching Quality In Self-Study Research, Ayesha Bashiruddin
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
This paper discusses how the Master of Education (MEd) students at AKU-IED are empowered to understand and monitor quality in self study research. The paper is based on the experience of teaching self study research over a period of three years. During this period, students in the Teacher Learning course in the MEd programme were asked to explore their journey of becoming teachers and teacher educators using self study research. As an end product the students were asked to write an autobiography. During these processes of self-exploration and the writing process, they were asked to follow guidelines identified by Bullough …

Effective School Leadership: Can It Lead To Quality Education?, Jan-E-Alam Khaki
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
This paper examines the role of effective leaders in bringing about quality in teaching and learning in schools. It is based on my doctoral empirical research undertaken during 2000-2005 under the auspices of the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (OISE/UT), Canada. My study explores the roles, beliefs and behaviors of three reputationally effective secondary school headteachers in Karachi, Pakistan, in three types of schools – government, community and independent, assuming that contextual factors will influence the nature of leadership. The findings reveal that all three heads’ beliefs and practices show similarity in a vision of providing …
Defining Quality In Early Childhood Settings: Experiences From The Field, Atiya Hussain, Audrey Juma
Defining Quality In Early Childhood Settings: Experiences From The Field, Atiya Hussain, Audrey Juma
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
“The successful education of the child during her/his years of schooling and the participation of that child in society as an adult, depends to a greater degree upon the foundation laid during the early years” (Evans, Myers and IIfled, 2000, p.7). Research indicates that learning is crucial to development whereby knowledge, skills, attitudes and values are developed. Research from disciplines such as physiology, nutrition, health, sociology, psychology and education provide evidence indicating that the early years are crucial in terms of developing intelligence, personality and social behaviour of children. If children are not provided opportunities to communicate, learn and develop …
Policies And Practices Of Capacity-Building For Educational Managers: Prior To And After Decentralisation, Sajid Ali, Meher Rizvi
Policies And Practices Of Capacity-Building For Educational Managers: Prior To And After Decentralisation, Sajid Ali, Meher Rizvi
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
Decentralisation trends in education are consistently being followed around the world including South Asian countries (Govinda, 1997). In Pakistan, decentralisation in education came through a radical devolution policy in August, 2001, and new governing structures are currently undergoing a transition phase. Effective decentralisation requires education managers, key players in a devolved system, to acquire new knowledge and skills. In order to understand the policies and practices of capacity-building of educational managers and their impact on educational decentralisation, a research was conducted between March and November, 2005. This paper reports on the major initial findings emerging from this research which suggest …
Health Curriculum And School Quality: Aku-Ied’S, Shabnam Ahmed
Health Curriculum And School Quality: Aku-Ied’S, Shabnam Ahmed
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
This paper is based on the experiences of the Health Action Schools project at AKU-IED and looks at issues surrounding the definition, choice and implementation of planned content of health education for primary schools in Pakistan. The paper argues that health education is a vital component to achieving quality because it links home with school; ‘needs now’ with ‘needs later’. Yet it proves exceptionally difficult to plan and deliver such content effectively because curriculum planning bodies are geared to work with separate subjects rather than across the curriculum, with classroom content rather than wider learning experiences in and from school, …

The Emotional Dimensions Of Urban Teacher Change, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna, Donetta Cothran
Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
This study used an emotional geographies theoretical framework to analyze the emotional dimensions of urban teacher change. Fifteen urban physical education teachers involved in a comprehensive curriculum reform project were interviewed and observed multiple times across one school year. Data were analyzed using inductive analysis, and trustworthiness measures included triangulation, peer debriefing, researcher journals, and member checks. Teachers reported that emotional dimensions related to their urban students, colleagues, and status heavily influenced their engagement in the project. The discussion section maps the emotional dimensions of these teachers' change experiences onto an emotional geographies framework that situates their experiences in change …
Best Practices Of National Board Certified Teachers And Non-Board Certified Teachers In Grades One And Two, Sue Ellen Hollandsworth
Best Practices Of National Board Certified Teachers And Non-Board Certified Teachers In Grades One And Two, Sue Ellen Hollandsworth
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The education of children in America has been the cause of much debate and conflict. At the center of this debate is the need for quality teachers. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was formed to advance the quality of teaching and learning by recognizing accomplished teaching. Teachers with this certification fit West Virginia’s definition of a highly qualified teacher under No Child Left Behind. If the National Board Certification (NBC) itself is reason for the highly qualified designation then the classroom practices of those teachers should differ from those who have not gone through the certification process. …

Interviews provided anecdotal information of teachers’ experiences in finding, creating, and using the Internet for professional and instructional activities. Findings …
A Phenomenological Interpretation Of John Dewey's View On Education, Wasim Qazi Dr., Khalid Rawat
A Phenomenological Interpretation Of John Dewey's View On Education, Wasim Qazi Dr., Khalid Rawat
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Education in our times is promoting nihilism. The reason for this conclusion is that modern education is largely knowledge based and asks the learner to learn ideas that have nothing in common with the reality of the learner. Knowledge, on the other hand, does not enjoy absolute value, and, to say that a person who has more knowledge is more valuable is wrong. John Dewey’s criticism on traditional education is equally valid for modern education, for modern education is not performing its functions properly. The function of education is to establish a strong relationship between learner and Being. However, modern …

Children And Grief: Understanding The Grieving Process And Counseling Strategies Of Elementary School Children To Ensure Academic Success, Georgia Fielding, Jacob Crowder
Children And Grief: Understanding The Grieving Process And Counseling Strategies Of Elementary School Children To Ensure Academic Success, Georgia Fielding, Jacob Crowder
Perspectives In Learning
The 2005 U.S. Bureau of Census states that more than 2 million children and adolescents under the age of 18 have experienced the death of a parent. One of the most stressful events for children and their families is the death of a parent or other loved one. The surviving parent may have difficulty coping with the loss of his or her partner, and this difficulty in coping may affect how the children work through the grieving process. If the children do not deal with grief effectively, they may have to deal with major psychiatric problems and social dysfunctions throughout …

Where Are We Now?: A Study Of Gifted Program Availability By Region, Urbanicity And Ses, Elizabeth A. Romey
Where Are We Now?: A Study Of Gifted Program Availability By Region, Urbanicity And Ses, Elizabeth A. Romey
Perspectives In Learning
There is considerable diversity among gifted programs and program availability in the United States. This is at least in part due to the fact that there is no national mandate for gifted programming, despite the existence of the Javitts Act. Instead, decisions about gifted programming are left up to the individual states, which may then choose to allow individual counties or districts to set their own standards. This in turn creates a situation in which parents and teachers of the gifted have no ready access to information about the type of gifted programming options available in their area. Many of …

A Framework For Inclusive Teaching In Stem Disciplines, Lois Reddick, Wayne Jacobson, Angela Linse, Darryl Yong
A Framework For Inclusive Teaching In Stem Disciplines, Lois Reddick, Wayne Jacobson, Angela Linse, Darryl Yong
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
A wide body of literature exists recounting the ways in which inclusive teaching practices and principles benefit students and positively impact learning, student retention, and professional development across disciplines. However, STEM faculty do not readily accept the traditional approach of examining course content from multiple perspectives as relevant to their course content or useful in their teaching. In this chapter, we propose a Framework for Inclusive Teaching in STEM Disciplines that reflects the contexts of teaching in these disciplines, and extends James Banks’ Five Dimensions of Multicultural Education to the distinct needs of STEM faculty in their classes. We also …

Full- Time, In-Class, Face- To- Face Courses...Why (Then) Online Discussion?, Maha Bali Phd, Adham Ramadan, Nagla Rizk
Faculty Journal Articles
Most of the literature advocating online discussions cite the main advantage as encouraging interaction for students who either see each other rarely (e.g. in mostly distance learning courses) or have insufficient time to interact in class (e.g. in large lecture halls). However, at AUC, some faculty are using online discussions, despite the relatively small class size, and the regular meetings every week. In this paper we explore two different cases of using online discussion at AUC across several semesters: one for an introductory environmental science course and one for an advanced economics course. The instructors outline their reasons for using …

University Students Of Tomorrow: Changing Experiences, Changing Expectations, Changing Brains, Neal Grandgenett, Neal Topp
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
The rapid pace of technological change is becoming a catalyst to a growing group of college students who are essentially "digital natives." Metropolitan universities need to become aware that these students have considerably different experiences, expectations, and even brains than past students. Universities must carefully adjust their programs and teaching methods if they are to retain these students and prepare them for a digital society. This article describes the basis for this call to action.

Introduction To Chinese Youth (With A Commentary), Jieying Xi, Yan Xia
Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
Different countries and fields of study differ in determining the age group of youth. Based on the census result from the National Bureau of Statistics and the situation of Chinese youth, the age group of youth is defined as those from 15 to 29 years old. Therefore, Chinese youth described in this chapter refers to the age group of 15-29 living in the Chinese mainland, not including youth from Hong Kong, Macao Special Administrative Regions and Taiwan Province. According to China’s fifth census conducted in 2000, the youth population in the Chinese mainland is 315 million, accounting for 25.36% of …

Phonological Awareness Instruction: Opinions And Practices Of Educators And Speech-Language Pathologists In West Virginia, Melinda J. Daniel
Phonological Awareness Instruction: Opinions And Practices Of Educators And Speech-Language Pathologists In West Virginia, Melinda J. Daniel
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Research has shown phonological awareness to be a strong predictor of literacy. To support literacy development, a phonological awareness project was piloted in several West Virginia schools in 2001. This study compared WV educators based on employment setting (schools participating and those not participating in the phonological awareness project) and professional category (classroom teacher, reading specialist, speech-language pathologist) on answers to survey questions related to phonological awareness. Results showed no significant relationships between employment setting and responses. However, reading specialists reported spending more minutes per week providing phonological awareness instruction to children at risk for reading difficulty than did speech-language …
Leadership And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie Brooke
Leadership And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie Brooke
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The objective of this research is to understand the impact of leadership style on employee job satisfaction in an effort to improve leader-employee relations in nonprofit child care settings. Since turnover rates, separation costs, vacancy costs, and training costs are high in child care centers (Vickers, 2002), providing strategies for increasing job satisfaction will lead to a more stable environment for children and their families, promote positive leader member relations, and strengthen the organizational climate. Since leadership style can critically influence employee satisfaction, this study is of significant importance in promoting social change. Specifically, it focuses on a unique industry, …

Department Chairs’ Perception Of Faculty Participation In Accreditation Activities: A Follow-Up Survey, Cathryn Peterson
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The purpose of this study was to explore physical therapy department chairs’ perceptions of the extent to which their faculty members participated in the activities leading to accreditation, and whether or not this participation was associated with accreditation outcome. This study was conducted and completed in 2004 as a follow-up to a previous study that explored the relationships among accreditation outcome and management style employed by the chair person, faculty participation in accreditation activities, faculty commitment to implementing the plans delineated in the accreditation documentation, and faculty support of the accreditation process.
